  1. My kitchen is a kitchen/diner as it's quite big, but it isn't connected to another room (only the hall), and the whole of the room presently has a concrete floor (with vinyl laid on top - which must be well over twenty years old :))). The floorboards throughout the rest of the house are painted white (with varying degrees of efficiency depending on who did them :))), so matching the wood won't be a problem as I'll be painting it. Not very practical in a kitchen I know, but hey ho. I'm happy to have a small step up from the hall to the kitchen, and I certainly think that is preferable to doing a major excavation job on the concrete, quite apart from pissing off the neighbours :)) However I do wonder what will happen re the kitchen units, as I'm having new units. Will the old units have to be removed and the floorboards laid throughout the kitchen before the new units are installed, or will it be possible to retain the old floor level underneath the new units, if you see what I mean? As is obvious, I am totally useless at getting my head round all this :)) It's happily clear that I won't need to go down the laminate route, however, hooray!! Thanks everyone!!
  2. Why has my post been removed? Is it against forum policy to point out hypocrisy?
  3. Pity you didn't practice what you preached before posting false and serious accusations about me on this very forum, DJKQ.

James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Southwark have > announced that theyre procurement excercise came > up with cheaper prices than the pan London > procurement excercise. xxxxxxx Great in theory, but it always worries me when cost seems to be the main/only criterion. Hopefully that isn't the case here, but you wonder what corners might be cut to make sure your tender comes in cheapest ......
  6. Thanks all, very helpful :)
  7. I have a concrete kitchen floor. I want to lay floorboards over it. I realise there will be a step up due to the level change, but is this feasible? Will it be too high due to needing joists, for example? Laminate has been suggested but a) I hate laminate and b) It won't match the rest of the house. Any ideas?
  8. My point exactly! The other florist can't be exactly delighted, if this is true.

  16. That's really quite worrying. Surely electricity cables can only short if they are touching? So they can't have been laid properly in the first place? And they see this sort of incident "around three times a day" ?!?!?!? And - what happens if you pour water onto live electric cables? Ooer ......
  17. malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Don't use those bloody spice teabags, and don't > ever ever ever buy that spiced wine from Ikea. xxxxxxx Actually Ikea's mulled wine varies greatly. One year they had two different kinds (both alcoholic) and one kind was delicious and the other was revolting. But - if they've got any left - DON'T be tempted to buy the mulled wine which the Co-Op had on offer before Christmas reduced to ?2.99 a bottle. At that price I thought it was worth a try even if only as a basis for "proper" mulled wine. It was without doubt one of the most disgusting things I've ever drunk. Pale pink syrupy stuff, yuk yuk yuk (I still drank it all though, in the interests of experimentation. Waste not want not, etc.) ETA: I agree re using full-bodied red wine, but having said that I found the Sainsbury's house red did the job this year :)) If you aren't going to add brandy or rum, it's probably more important to make sure your wine isn't too "thin".
  18. Mix dark brown Muscovado sugar with boiling water to make a syrup. Add cardamoms, cloves, cinnamon sticks broken into pieces, fresh grated nutmeg, mace, star anise - or a selection of those but I use the lot ! You can add Sainsbury's basic orange juice if you like. Also add oranges and a lemon cut into bits. If you have time, simmer all these together for a while - you can then leave the mixture overnight, if not it doesn't matter, you just won't get the full spice taste. Sainsbury's house red (comes in 1.5 litre plastic bottles) is cheap and is fine for mulled wine. Add cheap brandy or dark rum to taste. I don't bother sieving the bits out, but some people may not like them. To do a Scandinavian version (Glog) you can add almonds and raisins if you like. Experiment till you find a variation you like - mine changes every time but it's always delicious! You might like it more or less sweet, for example, or you may prefer rum to brandy. As PeckhamRose says, for goodness sake don't let it boil once you've added the alcohol, unless you want a non-alcoholic mulled wine ..... And it's very strong, so don't be fooled by the sweet taste .... Enjoy :) ETA: I sometimes add sliced fresh ginger .... ETA: I put a dessert spoon in the glass when pouring in the hot wine, to stop the glass cracking, but not sure if this is just a myth ....
  19. I also appreciated the Christmas card, James, and would like to thank you for all your hard work for East Dulwich over the past year. And I echo what Alan Medic said (apart from the bit about getting two cards, as I only got one!) Have a great rest over Christmas - you deserve it!

  21. Got to Grove Vale at 1pm, was 37th in the queue!! Waited an hour on the off chance but it was quite clear it was no go. Ridiculous allocating four per person - apparently people are selling them on eBay :( Why wasn't there a draw, with people invited to apply online? Would have been much fairer and I and the others queuing wouldn't have got very wet :)) James - how about campaigning for a discount for Southwark residents? No way will I be able to go otherwise. But hey at least I once went to a champagne reception on the top of what was once the NatWest tower :))

    Restricted parking

Thanks - I had found that website, but the streets I'm interested in (around Nunhead Green) don't have anything to indicate whether there are restrictions or not, and I'm not sure whether that is because there aren't, as there is a symbol saying street parking, which they don't have either. I guess I'll just have to go and have a look :(
  23. Having spent ten minutes googling without success - does anybody know an easy way I can find out which SE15 streets have some kind of restricted parking and which don't?

Preferred the karaoke :)) I think that was the night I was scared to come out of my cubicle in the loo because of a rather violent conversation between two women in the adjoining cubicle. But I did quite like the Wishing Well, even though towards the end they never had any beer. The Kraftwerk Tribute Night was good :)) ETA: I know it's not a pub, but the back room of Kebab and Stab can be quite scary in the early hours of Friday night/Saturday morning. Scares me, anyway ......
