East Dulwich woman killed by runaway car in West Hampstead
Sue replied to Girl82's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I had posted agreeing with Otta's point about elderly drivers, then belatedly realised it was not an appropriate thread to be expanding on that. Sorry. Can't begin to imagine what this must be like for all involved. -

Yesterday (during the day) I saw a dead sparrow lying on the pavement in Ulverscroft Road. It didn't have any obvious signs of injury. It seemed to be quite young, though it was hard to tell. It's quite unusual to see dead birds around at all, so I wonder if anybody can shed any light as to what might have happened? The flies were beginning to gather :(

I had a bird of prey in my tiny garden a few years ago. It was actually quite scary because it was so large in relation to the size of the garden. I used to get a load of starlings coming down to my bird feeders, and it had one in its claws. The poor starling was making the most terrible noise. I was going to go out and try to rescue the starling, but thought better of it when I realised what a large beak and claws might do to me, never mind the starling :))

Even if someone got the guy's number, which in the heat of the moment and worrying about your kids is going to be the last thing on your mind, it's one person's word against another's unless there's proof, surely?

Fair enough. Sounds like they could do with a mirror there or something, particularly as it's near the school. ETA: Crossed post! A lollipop person would be an even better idea. ETA: Except of course a mirror would be there all the time, and the lollipop person only at school going in/coming out times I guess ......

And > even if that happens, who is losing out? xxxxxx Well presumably the registered Big Issue sellers would be losing out. But I agree, it's highly unlikely anybody could do that, or even want to.
-
That's fair enough. I'm REALLY not trying to have a go, and clearly the driver was totally out of order, and I'm very glad nothing terrible happened to any of you. But given that there are this kind of lunatic drivers on the road, maybe best to check that traffic is slowing down before you start crossing, even if theoretically you are in the right ...... Easy for me to say, I know. And it shouldn't be necessary, of course it shouldn't. But better to be safe than sorry.....

The only time I've knowingly been scammed by a Big Issue seller was once in town. I gave him the money, he handed me the mag. Then he asked for it back so he could sell it to somebody else :)) It seemed he only had one copy. I thought it was quite enterprising actually so I did give him the mag back .....

david_carnell Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Elephant and Castle? xxxxxx Oh yeh, good thinking. The website I posted the link to gives "Southwark" as one of the options, but I didn't bother to investigate where abouts in Southwark - I guess that would be it :)

Is this a Pelican crossing? When you say the light was red and you had the right of way, was the "green man" showing for pedestrians? ETA: I'm not excusing the motorcyclist, but having the right of way does not mean you shouldn't look to see what is coming before stepping out into the road - unless s/he came suddenly round a corner so couldn't be seen?

jane1 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > do they do clubs xxxxxx I've no idea, I just googled it to help you out :) I guess any further research is down to you now - phone or internet :) ETA: Sorry don't mean to sound harsh. Maybe someone in the family room section of the forum would know?

It's 4.30am and the heathrow flight path appears to be in use
Sue replied to maxtedc's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There was an interesting programme on Radio 4 this morning - about 9am - about how Heathrow came to be sited where it was, prevailing winds etc. and how that now means the planes in and out of Heathrow fly over heavily populated areas (ie in this case, us). I didn't hear all the programme as I had to get up (blush). -
Hi, you could try knocking on the doors of houses near the sorting office to ask if they've had problems with noise. A way to meet/check out your prospective new neighbours, too :) You could also have an early start one day and go to the area one morning to check out the noise level for yourself - bad time of year, I know, but the weather's not as cold as it has been at the moment!

I'm genuinely interested to know your view here!

KidKruger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Isn't there a bloke who (I believe) 'legitimately' > sells Big Issue outside the large charity shop ? > I'd be interested to know his view on this. xxxxxxx Yes. He's a really nice guy. Presumably this other woman is taking business from him. But I'm a bit bemused, because there have been women selling the Big Issue outside the Co-Op for years.

The Dulwich Folk Choir meets upstairs at the EDT every Tuesday night at 7pm. No auditions, everybody welcome whatever standard, and you can choose what part you want to sing for each song. Choir members can also suggest songs they would like to do. The Choir leader is Aimee Leonard. Its ?4 an evening. Its a very friendly choir with people of all ages which has been going since January 2012. There's a very good mix of men and women. You don't need to read music, in fact there isnt any!!! We sing songs from various cultures but based in folk music as it's a folk choir. We're doing some seasonal songs at the moment for obvious reasons.

I'd have a go myself but feeling a bit fragile this morning .....
