Otta, I just accidentally discovered that just putting the web address of the link in your post, even without any formatting, produces a link when the post goes "live". Not sure how that happens though!

I am - obviously - not defending thieves, but is it possible they may have thought you were throwing the furniture out? When I have put stuff outside the front of my house pending the council collecting it or my taking it to the tip myself, it has often disappeared. Sometimes people ask if they can have it, more often they don't. I do sympathise as I had planted-up window boxes stolen a few years back which were obviously not being thrown out, as a result of which yes, I have had to chain the new ones up.

Not actually a Fox. xxxxxxx The Co-op is extremely good value for some things, eg their own brand Value porridge oats and oatcakes, and frozen veg. Fox, obviously you are likely to get better stuff if you go to a butcher for meat and a greengrocer for fruit and veg, but it is also sometimes more convenient to get everything in one place. Edited for typo.

If memory serves we also got a cup of tea included :) -

I have a silver birch (betula jacquemontii) outside my house, which I actually requested when a previous tree died as it has such lovely white bark. Surely the council wouldn't knowingly plant street trees which were likely to cause subsidence?

I popped into the garden last week, Monica, and it is looking really good. People have clearly been putting a lot of work into the planting and maintenance. Really interesting to have the information about the plants, too.

There but for the grace of > god, and all that. xxxxxxx I agree. It's impossible to give to everyone even if you wanted to, or to know who is the most "worthy" of your money. But acknowledging that they are there, even if you don't give them anything, so that at least there is some interaction, often seems to be welcomed. It must be so disheartening if you have been forced into begging by circumstances (I'm not talking about those people who do it as a job) and almost everybody just walks past you as if you didn't exist. ETA: But I must admit I have often crossed Lordship Lane in order not to have to pass the same beggar or chugger twice.

That's put my computer problems into perspective! ETA: Might somebody on here know how to sort it for you? There seem to be quite a few techies who post.

I have plans for a very small one in my very small back garden. Broken plates and mugs are already going into a pot in readiness :D I thought about doing my doorstep, a la Blue Mountain, but I think that might be a step (hoho) too far ..... -

We went to an open day here last year, the place is absolutely wonderful, if you haven't seen it you must go :) We were there for ages just taking it all in. Maxxi, they probably don't want people nicking or damaging stuff in the front garden, which also contains some amazing things. -

Residents in my road (Ulverscroft Road) were asked over a year ago for expressions of interest in a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, and I replied saying I'd be happy to be involved. Knowing my neighbours, I'm pretty sure they would have replied in similar vein. Nothing has ever happened, despite my chasing the relevant team, so don't hold your breath :)

I still think it's a sad reflection on our society, full stop. ETA: And yes Penguin you're absolutely right, where children are harmed it is statistically far more likely to be by somebody related to them or who they already know.
