Right-Clicking xxxxxxx Thanks, yes, I'll have a look and uninstall anything I don't actually use. The only thing I can think it might be is that I had to uninstall AVG anti-virus because it was causing a problem, and am now using the standard Microsoft anti-virus.

Thanks both, that's helpful :) But it's Windows Explorer, Artful, not ie (I never use ie). I don't want to spend money upgrading - not at the moment, anyway.

For the last few months, when I have been using Windows Explorer eg to move documents to an external hard drive, I am getting an intermittent error message headed "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" and saying "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." When this happens, it is impossible to get rid of the message without starting Task Manager and closing Windows Explorer down from there :( The laptop runs Vista and it's only quite recently that this problem has started. I have tried googling and clearly this is not an uncommon problem, but I still don't understand how to resolve it and I'm hoping someone might be able to explain it in words of one syllable or at least non-techy. It's very very annoying and particularly as it doesn't happen all the time, but once it starts it just keeps on doing it :(

steveo Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Dinah Dinah show us your leg ...oh...no... that > isn't one xxxxxx We have been known to have rugby songs sung at the Singaround - who started them off shall be nameless (it wasn't me, but sadly I did join in .....) :):):) And Dinah Dinah was one of them ..... -

Old English/ other country songs from 1960's at school

womanofdulwich Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is there anywhere we can have a karaoke of these > locally? Rio Grande- great song. xxxxxxx If you want to sing songs like this, why not come to our free Singarounds? People sing all sorts of songs, and some of them are old English folk songs. The next one is on Sunday Upstairs At The Mag, 7.30pm. Friendly crowd and you don't have to sing if you don't want to! But people do sing along with the songs they know. Or just come and join in the choruses. More info at http://www.thegooseisout.com/aboutus.html#evec If there is a demand for folkie stuff for kids who aren't learning it at school (no idea whether they do or don't) Nyge and I will happily consider running something. PM me or contact me via the Goose website :) -

Creatives Needed! For The Cambria's Xmas Spectacular!
Sue replied to Jessy_jane's topic in The Lounge
Where's the Cambria? ETA: Seems to be somewhere in Camberwell, but googling it brings up a load of "site not found" messages ..... ETA: Oh, it's round the back of Ruskin Park, I've been there, duh :) -

Person hit by train at Denmark Hill (Driving to Morrison's from ED)

Sorry, somehow misread Camberwell as Peckham :) -
Somebody was killed by a falling branch in Kew Gardens a week or so back. I wonder if somebody is playing extra safe and felling any tree which might cause similar problems? No idea if this is the case (a tree in the middle of a pond would presumably only potentially kill ducks!)

Oh no, I say both DYEsect and harASSment. Sorry PGC and CS. I also say SUBsidence rather than subSYEdence. Is that wrong too? Oh what a complex world we live in ...... You say potayto and I say potahto, etc etc ..... -

I had to square up and say firmly that > no, it was not ok, and shutting the door on him. xxxxxxx Yes - they were very very keen to get into my house to do their "security survey". And scaremongering, I agree. I'm considering getting a "no cold callers" sign now, unfriendly as it appears. It's bad enough getting constant spam phone calls despite being on the list for not getting them .... I've taken to waiting till the answering machine kicks in, to see who it is. Spam callers don't use the machine. (BTW be very wary if you call 1471 to see who it was and get a number which is unknown to you. There is a scam whereby somebody phones, hangs up before you answer, you call 1471 and phone back the number you get, and you'll end up paying an arm and a leg to call it. Googling the number will usually tell you what it is and whether to phone it - usually not.)

Thanks ianr, I wasn't clear whether Fox's suggestion was both a physical system kept in the home and some sort of online backup. The advantage of Carbonite was that it was easy to use, it backed stuff up automatically without my having to think about it (once the initial upload had been done) and once when I somehow permanently deleted a vital file, God knows how, I was able to reinstall it very easily. However I then discovered that anything I had previously had on my laptop (and had had backed up on Carbonite) but had transferred to an external hard drive to free up space was no longer being saved on Carbonite, and that if I wanted to back that up as well I had to pay an additional arm and a leg. Hence I'm looking for something else quite urgently, as my carbonite subscription is about to run out and I don't want to renew it as it has become too expensive for what I want it to do.
-
God I'm confused. I have been using Carbonite for a few years to back stuff up, but I'm not happy with it any more. Fox, is your system foolproof ie everything is safe for ever? I have a load of stuff backed up on an external hard drive, but obviously that could fail. Is yours a sort of mixture between that and the Cloud? I'm not bothered about sharing stuff particularly, I just want to be able to retrieve it if the worst happens and my laptop crashes - documents, photos and music.

Had a small group (at least three) of smartly dressed people from ADT arrive at my door today saying they were doing "security surveys" of people's homes in order to "reduce the crime rate in the area." Not selling alarms, oh no, perish the thought. Just a warning, people. Assuming you don't want their obviously unbiassed advice, of course :)

What were > those of us with an HD Ready TV meant to do to > retune, do you know? xxxxxxx It has just come back to me that when I retuned mine, there were instructions to clear all the existing channels first and then start again from scratch. In case that's of any relevance! ETA: You also need to delete duplicates of the same channel, ie the ones without a strong signal. ETA: Yes, sorry, it's what Bic Basher said, you do it as a First Time Installation. But then still delete the ones without a good signal. -

Re: Freeview - How Many Channels in East Dulwich
Sue replied to the-e-dealer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Again probably a stupid question, but on my system the BBC etc channels came up as numbered in the thousands rather than at the beginning. I haven't been bothered to change them, although I could and probably should do, because it doesn't make much practical difference to the way I use my telly, but could it possibly be that you may find them right at the end of all the crap channels? -

It needed to be done twice on different dates ..... I wouldn't have thought the aerial needed moving, mine certainly didn't.
