Just connected the external hard drive again with a view to trying to transfer files and then seeing what is shown in the event log if there's a problem again. Be a little cautious - I got totally wrong info about train times from the National Rail Enquiries website the other day. Luckily the correct times were later rather than earlier than stated, so I didn't miss a train .....

Thanks Fox, I already know it is 32 bit - my query was whether to uninstall the existing Visual C++ programs first, not which one to then instal :) For clarity, I apparently already have: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 ATL update k (string of long letters etc) installed 25 January 2012 AND Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable installed 9 November 2011. I'm assuming the first one was an automatic update as I wouldn't have updated it myself. ETA: I just don't want to mess things up further, therefore I need to be absolutely clear whether installing a new package will be OK if the old programs are still there, or whether I need to uninstall the old ones first.

BytelLinks, do I have to uninstal the existing C++ programmes? I seem to have two of them at present (with slightly different names). Or will reinstalling the package automatically uninstal the existing ones?

The only thing I can think it might be is that I had to uninstall AVG anti-virus because it was causing a problem, and am now using the standard Microsoft anti-virus.

Thanks both, that's helpful :) But it's Windows Explorer, Artful, not ie (I never use ie). I don't want to spend money upgrading - not at the moment, anyway.

For the last few months, when I have been using Windows Explorer eg to move documents to an external hard drive, I am getting an intermittent error message headed "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" and saying "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." When this happens, it is impossible to get rid of the message without starting Task Manager and closing Windows Explorer down from there :( The laptop runs Vista and it's only quite recently that this problem has started. I have tried googling and clearly this is not an uncommon problem, but I still don't understand how to resolve it and I'm hoping someone might be able to explain it in words of one syllable or at least non-techy. It's very very annoying and particularly as it doesn't happen all the time, but once it starts it just keeps on doing it :(

The next one is on Sunday Upstairs At The Mag, 7.30pm. Friendly crowd and you don't have to sing if you don't want to! But people do sing along with the songs they know. Or just come and join in the choruses. Somebody was killed by a falling branch in Kew Gardens a week or so back. I wonder if somebody is playing extra safe and felling any tree which might cause similar problems? No idea if this is the case (a tree in the middle of a pond would presumably only potentially kill ducks!)
