I'm not quite sure why it's relevant that you have no connection with Royal Mail, but I used to be a senior manager with Royal Mail and I am well aware that the vast majority of employees are honest. However - as in any walk of life, as you say, some are not, which is why Royal Mail has (at least I assume it still has) an Investigation Department. However they can't investigate unless people tell Royal Mail when items of post go missing.

It's not surprising it's busy, because obviously everybody is trying to get through first thing in the morning. They really should have more lines. Because I live five minutes walk away I don't usually bother trying to get through on the phone any more, unless I really am too ill to get dressed and walk round the corner. But I sympathise with people who have a longer journey to get there (or who have to get to work).

Is the phone really off the hook between 8am and 9am? I'm not doubting your word, just wonder how you know? I once years ago (not in ED) needed an urgent appointment with my dentists and couldn't get through on the phone, so when I eventually in desperation went there in person - yes, the phone was off the hook, in full view of patients. GRRRRRRRR.

:( Unfortunately I found a week or so back that my bird food had gone all manky, presumably due to all the heavy rain. Have changed it all now but there is a distinct lack of birds coming down to it, hope it hasn't killed them - hope word has just got round that the food in my garden was crap :-$ They do seem to be eating aphids and stuff though ....

Thanks all! Womanofdulwich, lovely idea but it would take me years! KK, the piano isn't varnished, it's got a sort of silk finish, I've never thought about it before but I guess it must be waxed. Otta, good idea, though I didn't even know there was a piano shop in Kirkdale! I was going to ask my piano tuner but I wondered whether anybody here might have tried it. Steveo, it looks fine, it's in good nick, I haven't fallen out of love with it, I am just going through a paint everything white phase :)) years after everybody else ......

Sorry, but the only way to find out why mail goes missing is for every missing item to be reported, so that any pattern can be identified, eg the same person on duty each time at a particular stage of the process. Then a watch can be made of that person. But my guess is that only a very small percentage of people who think they have missing items bother to report them, because they think it won't make any difference. So the thief/thieves - assuming there are any - will think, probably rightly, that they can carry on thieving because they won't be caught.

I have a thirties Broadwood upright piano, mahogany case, which I've had for over thirty years, AARRRGGGHHH. I'm very tempted to paint it white (:-$ ), but I'm worried it will affect the tone. It has a nice warm tone, which was the reason I bought it in the first place. I've googled and there seem to be varying opinions about this. Has anybody actually done it, and if so what was the result? I'm never likely to want to sell it, so I'm not worried about affecting its value - if it still has any - but I won't do it if it would sound different. Obviously I'd just paint the wooden parts which show, not the sound board.

Can we be clear exactly which practice we are talking about, as there seem to be three different practices being discussed on this thread and I'm now totally confused! :-$

It does say on their website that if you don't like your sofa they'll pick it up for free and give you a no-quibble refund. Excellent customer service, as you say.
