I have a silver birch (betula jacquemontii) outside my house, which I actually requested when a previous tree died as it has such lovely white bark. Surely the council wouldn't knowingly plant street trees which were likely to cause subsidence?

I popped into the garden last week, Monica, and it is looking really good. People have clearly been putting a lot of work into the planting and maintenance. Really interesting to have the information about the plants, too.

But acknowledging that they are there, even if you don't give them anything, so that at least there is some interaction, often seems to be welcomed. It must be so disheartening if you have been forced into begging by circumstances (I'm not talking about those people who do it as a job) and almost everybody just walks past you as if you didn't exist. ETA: But I must admit I have often crossed Lordship Lane in order not to have to pass the same beggar or chugger twice.

We went to an open day here last year, the place is absolutely wonderful, if you haven't seen it you must go :) We were there for ages just taking it all in. Maxxi, they probably don't want people nicking or damaging stuff in the front garden, which also contains some amazing things.

Residents in my road (Ulverscroft Road) were asked over a year ago for expressions of interest in a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, and I replied saying I'd be happy to be involved. Knowing my neighbours, I'm pretty sure they would have replied in similar vein. Nothing has ever happened, despite my chasing the relevant team, so don't hold your breath :)

I'm not quite sure why it's relevant that you have no connection with Royal Mail, but I used to be a senior manager with Royal Mail and I am well aware that the vast majority of employees are honest. However - as in any walk of life, as you say, some are not, which is why Royal Mail has (at least I assume it still has) an Investigation Department. However they can't investigate unless people tell Royal Mail when items of post go missing.

It's not surprising it's busy, because obviously everybody is trying to get through first thing in the morning. They really should have more lines. Because I live five minutes walk away I don't usually bother trying to get through on the phone any more, unless I really am too ill to get dressed and walk round the corner. But I sympathise with people who have a longer journey to get there (or who have to get to work).
