I have a slanket and I don't find it very warm at all. In particular I'm only 5'4" yet it doesn't cover my feet properly if I'm lounging on the sofa. Plus it's an absolute pain to take on and off, but if you keep it on, you trip over it when you try to go anywhere. Also it's a really bulky thing to store when you're not wearing it (ie most of the time :)) ) If you're going down the clothes route, tights under everything plus thermal undies plus several layers of clothing including socks, and including wearing a woolly hat around the house and possibly in bed :)) does it for me. Of course your flatmate may not wish to risk others seeing her looking like a baglady :)) Re the heating, as mentioned above, better (I think) in terms of cost and comfort to keep the place at a reasonable temperature always rather than have it get really cold then the heating kick in high for just a short time. ETA: Re the bill, you could always read the gas/electric meter (depending on type of heating) before and after you go out or whatever, and keep a record of who has used what. Then split the bill accordingly. Not sure if this would work. Or, if electric, you can get devices you clip round the meter and once you've input your tariff it tells you how much you are spending. I have a spare one you can have if you PM me. Edited again to add: Is your place draught-proofed? Do you have thermally lined curtains? Are there draughts coming through floorboards? Draughts can mean you have to turn the heating up much higher than you'd have to if you sorted out the draughts.

Yeh, Franklins' brunch is legendary :) And (just mentioning it as New Year's Day is a Sunday), they do a damn good roast too (had it for the first time on Sunday and won't be going anywhere else in ED for Sunday roast in a hurry). And their home made coffee ice cream - yum ....

So far as I recall, when I moved back here, I spoke to all the nearest neighbours and agreed with them that I could reserve a sufficiently large space outside the house for the van. Possibly a couple of them might have parked their cars outside, to be moved when the van arrived, otherwise the space was marked out with bins. I think the key thing is to get your new neighbours onside well in advance? Not sure if the bin marking out thing is actually legal, mind you .....

The people who came to the door tried to "sell" me the idea by saying my account would be directly connected to the meter and instead of paying a set direct debit amount month by month I would pay exactly what I owed. But according to the thread, it seems that the meter could be hacked :-S Think I'll give it a miss, got enough to do without researching this at the moment!

Very stupid question, but does it have a child lock which is still on? Mine stays locked for some time after the cycle has finished before you can open the door (or at least it used to, now it doesn't lock at all .....) ETA: And the power had to be on in order for the child lock to click off, if that makes sense.

Just had some very smartly dressed people round trying to flog Smart Meters, seeing if I "qualify" blah blah blah, have to change supplier, blah blah blah, we will give you cheque for ?264 blah blah. But they had no info they could leave, which always makes me immediately suspicious, and they wanted to come in, ditto. Just googled it and there's some info here Has anybody else had them call and if so is this actually a good deal? I'm on a capped tariff with Scottish Power at the mo.

However I have found the letter I picked up at the council event which has a different number on it which is 0800 054 6814. I've edited my original post to put that number in instead. Beth Chatto's garden is quite a long drive but definitely worth it :) and they have interesting plants for sale, as well.

Also the church on Goose Green has a Christingle service for children every year, with oranges and candles for them plus carols, but sorry I don't know what day it is this year (tried googling but couldn't find anything), but it is always during the day.

Twenty years ago someone delivering a pizza was mugged right outside my house. I'm not aware of any muggings in my road since then. Muggers are opportunists, I doubt they haunt particular roads.
