  1. Thank goodness for that, when it first started I thought I was hearing things! They seem to flicker a bit as well at times - very strange. ETA: I've just realised that's probably because they're on a dimmer switch, when it's turned up full there's no flicker. They're probably not meant to be used with dimmers.

Townleygreen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > People who send ecards instead of real > ones=cheapskates xxxxxx People who send ecards instead of real ones are pensioners with very little money spare for stamps. ETA: Good for you if you can afford it, Townleygreen. So could I when I was working.
  3. BB100 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > This is just a thought but have you considered the > smell to be from someone paint spraying? Maybe > spraying cars. xxxxxx I think the thing is, several people in different parts of ED have had the same issue over the same period of time. I would say it would be a highly unlikely coincidence that paint spraying was taking place in different areas at the same time, especially at this time of year? Just out of interest, is anybody still smelling the smell? Has anybody actually contacted the Environmental Health people? If not, we'll probably never find out what it is/was! ETA: Ironjawcannon, I always thought Neutrodol was supposed to neutralise smells, not cause them!
  4. Does anybody else find that the energy-saving lightbulbs Dennis provided make a strange buzzing sound? I was already using energy-saving bulbs in the rest of the house, but not in the kitchen (because of the type of lampshade I have there), and I'm wondering whether it's the socket or the bulbs. I've tried two different bulbs in the socket but haven't yet tried one of the bulbs in a different socket. But the "ordinary" globe light bulb I had in the socket before didn't buzz!
  5. Hat, the smell I smelt definitely did not smell of acetone. Acetone is a very distinctive smell which is unmistakeable.

Jacquie Lawson are good, maybe a bit twee and the music a bit naff, but people you send them to seem to like them, and they have the "aaaahhhh" factor :)

Nigel Blackwell xxxxx Hey, Dick Gaughan gets loads of credit! He's been at The Goose at least twice and possibly three times (too late to count) and he's coming to East Dulwich again in September! YAY !!!

I'd be somewhat worried about going to the aid of people being mugged if I thought I might be knifed - cowardly I know :-S

  13. Tarot, bad luck re the freezer, but I don't think your gas type smell has anything to do with this thread :) Unless everybody reporting a strange chemical-type smell here has a punctured freezer (I suspect not) :)
  14. Excellent news :) Might it be possible to edit the subject of the first post to say "Found"?
  15. richfish Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- And if you want to indulge yourself > inspirationally do one of the day long courses at > Great Dixter - sublime xxxxxxx Didn't know they ran courses - what a shame Christopher Lloyd is dead, I would have loved to have done a course with him, he's my hero :)

Not that fishy plastic/electrical overheating smell. Not acetone/nail varnish remover smell. Not burning smell of any kind. Not a sweet smell. Nearest I could say is that it was like some kind of DIY stuff eg paint thinner but as my memory is crap don't hold me to this. Question for those who have the smell - is it in just one room (and if so which one) or all over the house? I think the suggestion above to contact Environmental Health is a good one - I'd do it myself if I was affected, but I don't know if I am as my whole house presently smells of paint so I can't be sure there's any other smell as well.
  18. tarafitness Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > why don't you post this on the local businesses > thread... will be interested to see any reponses > you might get > > (for selfish reasons I'm afraid!) xxxxxx BJL doesn't appear to be looking for a local restaurant, judging by the phrase "anywhere in the City or central/north London would be convenient" :) So I guess it would be shunted off the local businesses thread PDQ ....
  19. There's a church in Upland Road, and according to the sign outside (which I keep meaning to take a photo of) the pastor is: L Bent Seems a bit of an inappropriate name as one would have thought he'd be hoping to go to heaven :) Makes me laugh every time I pass, anyway .... ETA: Katie, those photos are - erm - weird :))

jennyh Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Thats very helpful thank you very much! xxxxxx Jenny, I have most (possibly all) of the Bach remedies, if you want to try any of those mentioned on that website before you shell out on buying any, let me know. I've had them for years but keep forgetting I've got them (don't think they go off though)
  22. Gas man has advised my neighbour to have the oven checked out by British Gas Homecare .... and not to use the oven in the meantime .... but I tend to think the solvent explanation is more likely, particularly given the nature of the smell.
  23. Is the point being made that nobody actually intervened to help, or that nobody seemed to notice? The bystander effect was originally put forward when a young (I think) woman was murdered in the well (I think) of an apartment block in New York (I think) and despite her screams and many people hearing them, nobody even called the police. In the present case, it would depend whether anybody was actually perceived to be in need of help, apart from help to scoop up the money? If not, maybe people just thought it was none of their business? I'm assuming the robbers had scarpered by this time?
  24. My neighbour has just asked me to ask people with this problem if they have a cleaner. She is wondering if her cleaner may have used some new kind of oven cleaner or something which she brought with her. Anyone??
  25. Gas man currently at my neighbours. He can smell the smell but says it's not gas. He says it's chemicals. She doesn't use chemicals. I've just printed out this thread for her to show him. ETA: I also woke up with a splitting headache this morning, but I thought it was due to the paint I have been using. Now I'm worried it could be this chemical, as my neighbour has a bad headache as well.
