It's a weekly check of all clothes and hangings in the house from now on :)) I am mightily jealous re the goldfinch, all my efforts at attracting them have either failed dismally or else I have just not been looking out of the window at the right time ..... though the niger seed does not seem to have been eaten at all so I guess it's the failed dismally explanation ..... ETA: But a blackbird has been giving me great joy singing its heart out in the morning and evening either in my garden or somewhere very near it :)

Oh for goodness sake, this is London. Muggings, burglaries and murders happen everywhere. It's just that not every area has a forum where they are constantly being brought to residents' attention.
  4. I used to work in Islington and after trying loads of routes (I live off North Cross Road) found the least hassle was a 185 to Vauxhall and then the Victoria line to Highbury and Islington, or alternatively a 40 or 176 to the Elephant and then the Northern Line to the Angel and then walk or bus (I was based at the far end of Upper Street). I tended to get whatever bus came first. The 185 option was quickest, but not if I had to wait for ages for the bus! Never tried the 63 option but I don't live near the 63 route. Good luck. If I had a meeting I absolutely had to be on time for, I used to allow two hours to be on the safe side :-S
  5. That's weird, Minder, because I found a bee on my pillow on Friday (I think), which appeared to be totally comatose, though it wasn't dead. I put it out of the window and it just plummeted to the ground. It couldn't have come in the window because it was closed, so I don't know what's going on either! But I also saw what looked like a queen wasp yesterday looking for a way into my neighbour's roof. When it couldn't find one it flew across to mine, so no doubt I now have yet another wasp's nest about to be built in my loft :-S

Just notices on lampposts in the road affected, or leaflets to residents, would have been sufficient. Stampy-footed? I think not.

Put it on lampposts in the road in question (you mention lampposts, but there have been no notices about it on any lampposts in my road that I've seen - and I'm the sort of sad person who would have stopped and read them :)) ) 2. Put leaflets through the doors of the road in question 3. Knock on doors of of the road in question and talk to residents 4. Put leaflets under windscreen wipers of cars in the road in question 5. Put in free newspapers delivered to the road, rather than local papers which people actually have to pay for (and anyway you would have to buy every copy to be sure of seeing it) 6. Put a thread on the East Dulwich Forum. To the best of my knowledge, none of the above were done. As I say, I'm not against the car club space at all, far from it (though I haven't seen a car club car actually using it for a very long time). I just don't think the consultation methods used were sufficient except for people already involved in attending council meetings.

Just because a Car Club space appears doesn't mean suddenly several households in the road will give up their cars and join the Car Club!
  10. Townleygreen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- >. It was > made of currugated steel. You had to dig down to > construct the sheltering/sleeping area. Is this > what you have? > xxxxxxxx Guess it must be, but a previous owner of the house must have smashed it up, but then just left the rubble there and shoved a load of soil on top. I remember as a child in the fifties going to houses which still had the air raid shelters in place, but as it was not long after the war that wasn't surprising. I just would have thought they'd have either removed it completely or kept it as it was for storage, rather than smashing it up!

How do I obtain the minutes of the Community Council? And where are the dates and agenda advertised? There's little point in having such a Council if members of the community in question don't know about it, or don't know what matters will be discussed at each meeting. I don't have time to attend meetings on the off-chance that there may be something relevant to my life being discussed!
  12. I found out last week that a large part of my tiny garden has a smashed up air raid shelter underneath it - I'd always wondered why the garden was on several levels, despite its miniscule size. Did every house in ED have its own shelter? Seems rather excessive! I live in a terraced house and at least one set of neighbours also have one beneath their (equally small) garden.

    Rasta Mouse

Saw it yesterday, my daughter said I'd love it and I did, so do my granddaughters. Has replaced Third and Bird in my affections :)) I don't think it's racist at all (stereotypical maybe), I think it's showing kids cultural diversity, so all power to its paws and tails :))
  15. brightspark Wrote: -The Hospice > should have stored this problem from day one. > xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Maybe they did and that's why they've got no storage space for donations. Sorry :-$
  16. I did think it was a bit odd that she PMed me within about a minute of my posting, because the books were quite specialised diversity titles and I didn't think there would be much interest.
  17. louisiana Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Another option would be to take stuff to the > Dulwich Going Greener Give & Take event on > Saturday 5 March. > xxxxxxxx These are a great idea - I've been to a couple in Oxford with my daughter, both giving and taking. They weigh stuff on the way out to see how much has avoided going to landfill. My daughter once got a lovely cupboard :) Good for the environment, but not for charity, however.

They told me there was a notice in the window stating that they weren't taking goods, but the notice consisted of a large sheet of paper containing closely spaced type, as in a letter - who would stop and read that?! Afraid I lost my temper and shouted at them :-$ Wasn't going to lug it all back home again (I was on foot) and dumped it by a bin. Wasn't there when next I passed so hope someone could make use of it. Haven't dared go back in the shop since in case they recognise me as The Shouting Woman :))
  19. I gave away three books recently, had a few people interested and gave them to the first person to reply. When she arrived to collect them, she looked in the bag and said "Oh, I thought there were more than that, I thought you said five to ten"!! That was it - not even a thank you. I had clearly listed the titles, authors and publishers in my post, so there were clearly only three books. I was well pissed off, wished I had given them to somebody else as I could probably have sold them online and got twenty quid or so and now suspect she is going to do the same as she only seemed interested in quantity rather than content and clearly hadn't read my post properly, just saw "free books" :-S

I don't buy a local paper but I do glance through anything free which comes through the door :)) and don't recall reading anything about it. Maybe I'm just unobservant .....
  21. dukesdenver Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > Seconded, I often take stuff to the Trinity > Hospice shop on Walworth Road. The lady who runs > it is lovely xxxxxxx You can also take any amount of stuff to Trinity Hospice directly. Bit further to go (Clapham Common) but you can park in their carpark no problem.
  22. I live on Ulverscroft Road, we have a car club space at the end of the road and to the best of my knowledge nobody was consulted about it, it just appeared one day.
  23. minkturtle, that's a lovely description of your experience.
