  1. ring the council contact centre 0207 525 2000 and point out the danger. They will probably close the equipment but that may be for the best

Naturally you > keep your wits about you but it does end up being > far less stressful than public transport. And you don't have to go round the E&C the way the buses do. I don't. There is a cycling bypass all round the E&C (that you can't see from the bus so not the segregated lanes) used by hundreds of non-assertive cyclists every day. You don't have to wear Lycra or go fast. You can be safe all the time. Start on a social ride -- escorted by experienced riders along quiet backstreets and parks. This one starts from canada water (take your bike there on the train) https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/healthy-ride-canada-water-to-london-eye-along-the-south-bank/
  3. "more methods are becoming available. One it mentioned was composting, though I doubt that would be viable in London given the likelihood of fly-tipping, especially around Christmas. Reading it, I remembered a brochure for what appears to be a more practical solution. I'm no expert, so I've scanned and uploaded it here, so those who know better can make of it what they will". Flytipping dead bodies should be easy to track down the culprits. Cremation is very non eco-friendly as I guess the Guardian article says. Combined heat and power would be one solution -- attach area central heating systems to the crematorium. Also burial in stacks outside London which I would have thought to be the thing SSW most disapproved of. Trees are only eco-friendly upto a point and I would have thought that the composting element of burials would offset it.
  4. I don't understand you dbboy I think you need to realise that SSW have a refreshingly irrational position. a) Southwark is discriminating against Moslems and Jews because it doesn't provide enough burial space for them although they could choose it if they want QED b) therefore it shouldn't provide burial space for anyone.
  5. Hanover Housing Association Dulwich Mead. Sales only. Nothing for sale http://www.hanover.org.uk/properties/estates/dulwich-mead-dulwich/ some inside views and a sale price agreed subject to contract so (presumably) recent http://www.burnetware.com/property/dulwich-mead-herne-hill-se24/burne-000072/1
  6. I saw a kingfisher on Deptford Creek (probably just after it's turned into the Ravensbourne). Happiness.
  7. this is the sort of thing that brings local government into disrepute. A budget has to be spent or returned and we can't have that. Let's dream up something to spend it on.
  8. The hoop things are residential parking and I think there is more money for that than for the business/shopping parking. It's more secure too than hanging your bike on the fence. So yes, it would be a good thing if it pushed more people to demand safe residential parking for their bikes.
  9. The hoop things are for residential parking and there seems to be more money for them than for business parking. So yes it would be very good if it encouraged the owners to push for proper facilities though there may be quite a wait.
  10. IME the letters will remain and so will the bikes. To remove partly vandalised bikes from bike stands (or anywhere else) use Fix My Street https://www.fixmystreet.com. This works. I think the council must monitor it to make sure Veolia does it. But you are right and bike parking is called flyparking when it is obvious that people want to park their bikes while they shop etc but there are no bike stands. There is a council budget for business bike parking (so people can cycle to the shops) but it is very small and I think it keeps getting swiped for other things. If this is Councillor Barber's ward you could ask him to press for proper parking as well as to press for these bikes to be removed.
  11. southwark cyclists are going to be at the E&C on and off during today, counting cyclists and looking at problems/good bits so if you come by us wave and say Hello
  12. Many thanks to the person who suggested the Bike Train. The first of the regular weekly Wednesday rides is next Wednesday April 5th and full details are here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/award-winning-bike-train-returns/ We've taken people on to Canary Wharf if that would be helpful or we can try and find you a Bike Buddy to show you the way. The route as ably described by rendelharris is here: If our times or dates don't suit you probably best to try it out at the weekend so you get the timing right. Cycling is usually a lot quicker than anyone expects. Also this route is pretty congested at times during the week. I always tell people that from the north end of Rye Lane the main hazard is other cyclists. We will also show you a safe way round the part-closure of Surrey Canal Path just on the off-chance that it doesn't open as planned on Saturday. You can pm me for more info or any assistance you need although lots of good advice seems to be coming your way on here
  13. Does anyone know why the work on this (begun 2014) is still going on? Or possibly not going on. As we sat in the sunshine outside Rossi's there didn't seem to be anything happening there at all.
  14. You could try talking to the DVLA or to the police. Depending on how much personal aggravation from your parents you can stand and I appreciate how bad it can be.
  15. You did well. My Mum only stopped when it became clear that she would fail her eyesight tests and be stopped. I know that my re-action speeds fell in my 50s. My Mum in her 70s and 80s was forever being taken by surprise by other road users "Where did that lorry come from?". Always other people's fault for creeping up on her and "appearing out of nowhere"
  16. Will she want to drive? My Mum drove until very recently (she's 88) but she wasn't really safe. Outside London it's very hard to to without a car because there's virtually no public transport. But in London she might do better on the bus if you are close to the bus routes on DKH
  17. Maybe summarizable as "take legal advice"
  18. It seems to be impossible to get this section near Kings on the Rye made safer. I have complained about it. Other potholes get filled but this bit simply continues to deteriorate. The lanes are narrow, and the traffic is trying to go too fast. It is a very bad place to be trying to swerve around potholes.
  19. This doesn't sound as if it is needed for a mentally handicapped child but if it is then you need a discretionary trust and Mencap have a legal service which explains them and runs them. You would also have to take independent legal advice.
  20. this is a long list of associated documents most of which seem to be risk assessments of various sorts http://planbuild.southwark.gov.uk/documents/?casereference=17/AP/0671&system=DC this one is a pdf of the site including tree removals which are the solid red circles with dots in the middle -- in places where the trees are close together they look like fluffy red clouds: file:///C:/Users/Sally/Downloads/The7458.pdf Am I right to take it that this is the application to remove the nursery site (a lot of it seems to be hard standing)?
  21. If it's from the council and you're bang to rights, just pay it. As said above; otherwise it will double and keep doubling until bailiffs turn up on your doorstep if it's from a private parking company on private land such as a supermarket car park then look here: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/parking-tickets/appealing-parking-tickets/appealing-a-parking-ticket/
  22. Katanita wrote "But it seems like they've designed it for cyclists using the new CS to Blackfriars but not really thought about anyone else". I think this happens a lot. Traffic planners consider cyclists going in one direction (north maybe) and forget that they will want to come back (ie go south). or they think in terms of routes -- going to Blackfriars Bridge -- but not in terms of turning off east to go to Guys Hospital.
  23. Nigello, if there are particularly difficult bits of the new E&C for pedestrians, please let me know. Cyclist/pedestrian conflict (however caused) is something we are concerned about (and warned about for that matter but that's history). So let us know
  24. Very good quiet routes seem to languish unknown. I don't know what to do about that. The best route around the Surrey Canal Path closure is via Colegrove Road and Glengall Road but as far as I can see no one is taking it. A few people are going up Sumner Road which is a decent alternative although with tricky bits
  25. thanks Malumbu, I know what you mean the bits and pieces of infrastructure on the roundabout don't seem to be designed to fit together. We will be trying to work out how well the "on-pavement" bits work. We stood at the New Kent Road cycle crossing leafletting before Christmas and about 10% of cyclists went straight on (didn't cross the road and use the bypass). I went to have a look to see if they had spotted a brand new route but I couldn't see anything that looked particularly wonderful. Yes, we are very interested in air quality. The acting director of public health Jin Lim addressed our meeting last week and he emphasised the importance of clean air (for everyone) and exercise (for all our personal health) :)
