I came across this too, I was trying to park my car in North Cross Rd, outside Budgens.

"The oysters were lovely and tasted of the sea and not gloopy/snotty as I thought they would be." That's quite a common and mistaken preconception about oysters. I've not been able to get to this new place yet, but it's good to know that I may not have to go to Borough Market to eat oysters. I hope it all works out for him.

East Dulwich Garden Centre - possibly replaced with flats
Frisco replied to TJS's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Of course gaining planning permission doesn't automatically mean the development will be built, and the permission lasts for up to five years. Given the absence of first time buyers in the housing market at present, and the fact that buy to rent may be facing hard times, it may not be a good time to build 48 new flats. I also seem to recall a thread in the last month or so where it was said that new flats in ED that are currently on the market aren't being sold that fast, if at all. I wonder if they'll try to buy out the tyre place. -
"and are any of you aware that sadly every single kennedys sausage shop in south east london is closing in december" I wasn't aware of that, but the story is here: http://www.croydonguardian.co.uk/news/heritage/display.var.1710697.0.time_to_bow_out_for_ye_olde_sausage_shop.php It's sad, but it's maybe a result of them not moving and changing with the times. Whatever some may say about people wanting poncy versions of everything, the fact is that most people's aspirations, shopping habits, eating patterns and even, for some at least, dietary awareness have changed since the 1950s, but I doubt that what's on offer in Kennedys has. I agree that we do need a good and reasonably priced bakery on LL, but it would be preferable if the current ones saw the gap in the market and provided what is wanted before someone else with the skill and entrepreneurial know-how steps in and does it anyway. Good bread doesn't have to be 'poncey' or expensive but it also doesn't have to be the plastic Wonderloaf variety that some people here seem to crave and think we should all want to eat.

Great news. Did he remember you?

It was, I wouldn't have associated my house with it.

Watch out - lead and copper thieves (Denmark Hill station)
Frisco replied to Muttley's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
They should start a programme to changing manhole cover to something that's worthless for re-sale but still has the same strength. Southwark Cathedral had a lot of its lead stolen last week, and I doubt they'll replace what went with the same material. -
Against my better judgement, I decided to watch the new ITV1 comedy programme called 'Sold' tonight (it's still on) and low and behold I see part of it has been filmed in ED (well, borders anyway). First the exterior of Jenny Eclair's house is shown, followed by the minimalist interior. I can't tell if it features other ED roads and houses.

Is your property on on the market with Foxtons Dulwich? (Lounged)
Frisco replied to maison_d'etre's topic in The Lounge
"Foxtons make the area look nice, great shop front" You may think that, but don't you live in Peckham? -
"Anyway, what one might term the "Osborune Stewart Yechnique", if such does not amount to livel, seems to be based wholly on knocking copy..." Tsk, the standard of tying in ED is obviously in decline, unless the area has recently developed its own dialect.

I'll opt for b) in this case, I think.

"C & P machines would not really be practical in WR because, on Saturdays at least, they have 9 (or more?) people serving and, in order to keep the queue moving at its usual swift pace, you'd need at least 9 machines - which would clutter up the place no end. Cash transactions are traditional with bucthers' shops I think - and the vast majority of WR customers know it's a cash place and prepare themselves accordingly beforehand." However, obviously not everyone does prepare themselves beforehand, and we are supposed to be moving to being a cashless society. It's quite possible for busy places to have a number of wireless card machines in operation too. There seems to be a fair number of people saying they'd like the business to take cards, so they made find it useful to consider that some change may be advisable.
-
"A bit achronistic I know, but cards would slow the whole thing considerably." Cards don't take any more time than cash with chip and pin machines, and certainly nowhere near the time that cheques take to write. I can understand WR not wishing to pay the fees charged by credit card companies, and that's more likely to be the reason than transaction speed.

demolition/building on ivanhoe/bromar rd
Frisco replied to Jeremy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
"Well, there you go." Indeed. Glad to be of assistance. Anyway, does anyone actually know what exactly is happening to the DKH estate? Are there any websites with information on the plan? I know one block at the end of Quorn Road was gutted and changed to key worker housing, but is that what's happening to the rest of the estate? -

"I think those old Corporation of London estates are structuarlly sound and well built, but were not loked after as well as they could have been." DKH estate was never a Corporation of London Estate, it was previously owned by the GLC before it passed into the ownership of Southwark Council in 1986. City of London owned and managed estates, of which there quite a few scattered South London, have always been properly maintained and well managed. However, I believe they had the luxury of being able to be selective about which tenants they agreed to take, unlike other 'local authorities'. -

"You are correct, it was an old Council block that was very shabby and run-down." Yes, it was a small council block, but as for being old, it was significantly newer than the Dog Kennel Hill council blocks next to it. I thought the original plans were to demolish the all or the majority of that estate, does anyone know what the latest plans involve? The seems to be a lot of refurbishment going on. -
If we're going to get a pizza restaurant on LL, I'd like it to be Eco. http://www.ecorestaurants.com/

"Why are they so expensive?" Is that expensive? In my experience it isn't.

"How do you 'encourage' a child-free atmosphere?" Presumably by banning the little buggers, or at least by making them and their parents feel unwelcome. It's a bit of an odd strategy though, as I'd imagine that a large proportion of their available weekday clientele is likely to be mothers (with or without their children), so it's hardly likely to be good for their weekday business, and place like that can't only survive on weekend trade. Also, if they are too indiscreet about wanting a 'child free atmosphere" someone may just consider their actions to be age discrimination.

I didn't manage to get there today, unfortunately. How much are the oysters?

_On the other hand there are shops that go out of their way to be lovely - DIY store_ It shows how people's perceptions can differ. I decided never to go back to this place again, after the I spoken to very rudely by the person I assumed to be the owner, and then mocked within my hearing to others working in the shop. I wanted a bog standard candle holder and, given the range of non-DIY stuff (including household candles) they stock I thought is was worth checking there. In the end I found what I was looking for in East Dulwich Garden Centre - strange, eh?

"I have a black cat in my garden (Silvester Road). Does it belong to anyone? It might just be a stray trying to adopt me (it's so barking up the wrong tree - I don't like cats)." "I used to go there regularly for Sunday lunch after a full-on night out around 89/90" Yes, that's about the time I used to go there too.
