All my life I've had a spider phobia. I'd fight anybody to get out of a room first and once spent the night sleeping in an armchair because I'd seen a spider in the bedroom. However, I cured my phobia when I saw my 2yr old's reaction to a spider one day. I scooped up the spider in my hand to show him it was harmless as I didn't want him to have the same life long fear. Unbelievably I've done it a few times since though I still get goose bumps!

Whatever you do don't attempt to drive it to London. It won't take long for the engine to overheat again and you'll end up seizing the engine up and even more expense. The high mileage is an indicator. It might prove more cost effective to have a reconditioned engine fitted rather than fix the head gasket and then for something else on a knackered engine to break.

Rather than going back up to Derby why not phone around a few garages and then post the keys once you get a good quote?

As already pointed out here, replacing a head gasket is not an expensive or particularly difficult job but you don't specify whether there was any other engine damage. It's fairly unusual to replace a clutch within 3 years and also for a head gasket to blow. Does it have unusually high mileage? What size engine, has it been thrashed? What state is the rest of the car in? Just trying to understand why the nice AA man is suggesting you scrap it? You could try talking to Paul or Reg at Dulwich Garage for their advice on 0208 693 1442.

Jonsuissy, as a previous owner of a 2 year old Porsche I can confirm that I was indeed a flash git and a bit of a cock. But times change and so does taste and now I'm just a git (without a Porsche). I once lived on Underhill and regularly had cars broken into or keyed. On one night both cars were broken into. My neighbour regularly had the whole front bumper section of her 4x4 stolen, obviously to order.

I went to an air display in SA where the SAA 747 did a flyby by touching the tarmac and taking off again. I think they now do flyby's with the Airbus 340. Incidentally at same airshow one of the parachutes of a marine failed to open in front of the crowd. Not nice.

The Red Arrows are an amazing aerial display team though I'm not sure how effective they'll be if your sitting in a sports stadium. There are also safety issues to consider as you can't do stunts over spectators. When you watch them at an airshow they normally cross over etc above the runway and well away from the crowd. When they do flypasts over London there is a minimum height they can fly at and if cloud cover is low then the flight is canceled. You can't ignore the fact that they are in someway symbolic of the military even though they are one of the things that puts the G8 in GB. Perhaps we can have a Fish Battering and Chip frying display instead.

Perhaps they should be rebranded the Pink Arrows and have fluffy smoke trails . . .

Was once given VIP tickets to Paul and Stella's Wembley concert which I took up even though I wasn't a fan but kind've like the Wings classic Live and Let Die. After 30 secs of the opening film pushing veggyness I left my seat for the free bar. I think I was eventually carried out. By chance I met one of his sons in a pub in E&C a couple of years later. He didn't have many good things to say about his dad. I also briefly knew Heather long before she lost her leg and subsequently married Paul, but I can't afford to talk about that! Not even Paul deserved that.
