  1. I agree James84. If the local councillor won't accept there's a recent increase (which may or may not turn out to be the case when the Sept/ Oct figure are published) then what hope is there for getting anything done. My advice would be to attend your next SNT ward panel meeting because there you can actively shape which types of crime the local police prioritise for the coming months. Concita, who told you that you can not put a cctv camera watching the street in front of your house? Lot's of people have cameras doing just that. And the law seems to suggest, that in itself, does not contravene the data protection act.
  2. Some of those tube drivers earn a lot of money as well......
  3. See I am one of those people who discretely 'parks' a basket sometimes....especially if I forgot an item when I was at the other end of the store, and the basket is full. The reason I park is because if the shop is busy, it's quicker to negotiate the trolley jams and slow lanes on foot than loaded with a full basket or two........does that make me a basket case?
  4. Oh no I'm going to do it again and agree with Pearson. All public sector services are going to have to make cuts...and they all are going to fight tooth and nail over them. Whilst I symapthise with anyone facing a job loss, like Pearson says, public sector workers are afforded benefits and employment protections that the vast majoirity of private sector workers don't have. Ask any private sector worker when they last got a pay rise for example..year on year rises just don't exist for them. My understanding of the dispute is that the Union doesn't want to facilitate job losses. We've heard the argument of lives being at risk every time a station closure has been proposed in the past. An argument that was not born out in reality.
  5. Even according to the data there are at least two residential burglaries a week in ED and three in Forest Hill. And that level hasn't varied much in years apart from a small peak last year, which James has used to claim a drop in crime - when in truth, burglary has been pretty constant for years. And as I pointed out...things that affect the figures when they rise and fall are more to do with the incarceration of know prolific criminals and/or the moving into an area of new ones. But what good is knowing any of that if when caught, the courts only imprison as a last resort. That's why figures for burglary rarely differ from year to year. There's no effective process to take burglars off our streets for long enough.
  6. It is true that the courts are lenient agianst burglars. The three I referred to in Peckham Rye ward had committed countless burglaries, been caught on many occasions, and were only given a custodial sentence as a last resort. Many of these criminals are well known to local Police but they are powerless to do anything beyond arresting and prosecuting them. Regarding CCTV, the laws specific to it's use are those of the Data Protection Act. Private businesses are required to abide by certain requirements but...... "Security equipment installed in home by individuals for home security purposes." - Part 4 of the Data Protection Act 1998 covers Domestic Use: Domestic purposes: (36) "Personal data processed by an individual only for the purposes of that individual's personal, family or household affairs (including recreational purposes) are exempt from the data protection principles and the provisions of Parts II and III". So in most cases you would not be breaking any law to install surveillance equipment designed to protect your home from intruders, and that includes monitoring the area outside of your home.
  7. Victims of burglary know perfectly well that these figures do not correspond to the reality Also from the postings on the forum recently their does seem to be a burglary team targetting the area. Usually if a team can be caught it does impact significantly on figures (as with the case I pointed out for Peckham Rye) as one team is usually responsible for a lot of burglaries. Just on security. Hard drive CCTV systems don't cost very much these days around ?200-?300 for a decent enough all weather one. It might be worth neighbours clubbing together and getting one to watch the fronts of house and the street. If these guys are bypassing alarms and taking out windows (as detailed in some previous threads) then they are clearly professionals, not opportunists and it will take a professional response to catch them.
  8. James I can tell you exactly why Peckham Rye ward dropped, because three major culprits for residential burglary were no longer in the aera following placement in secure units. Obviously I'm not going to post sensitive details in a forum but they were erpsonsible for a good deal of that type of crime in the Peckham Rye area.
  9. It's very sad Conchita to see hear are the latest victim of burglary. And I totally agree that councillor James is insensitive with his reply. Even one burglary is one too many. What James also doesn't point out is that 2008/9 saw an overall increase in crime compared to the previous year and that reduction he refers to are a simply a dip back to the previous levels (of 2007/08)...so no reduction in crime locally at all really. The year on year figures for local wards/ areas can seen here Furthermore there was an increase in Burglary figures in East Dulwich from 10.70 to 10.98 across 2009-2010 (viewed here. Nunhead saw an increase from 9.25 to 13.44 and Forest Hill saw a small decrease from 15.03 to 14.08.
  10. I would like a bottle of Channel Allure eau de Parfum for Christmas if anyone wants to buy me a present :)-D If you bought me a pan Tarot I'd hit you over the head with it......! >:D<
  11. To be fair Tarot, isn't it better to have a world where prejudice is minimised rather than a world where it is rampant? Personally I don't think the OP intended any offense. Nonetheless there is no harm in exploring if any offence may have been taken.
  12. lol...we'll it would take a giant leap from me to the dark side as well....>:D
  13. We'll be dating next ;)
  14. Good luck from me too Penny.
  15. If it took my life to save ten I'd happily give it.......so I wouldn't do absolutely 'anything' to survive. We are nothing important at the end of the day. The world will not stop turning because anyone of us lives or dies.
  16. the debt stood at about ?60m. 3 years later is was ?276m That kind of thing just has to stop. Most business performing like that would go to the wall.
  17. DF you miss the point. Black, White, Male, Age etc are not slang terms with sometimes derogatory connotations. Pikey it can be argued, when used in certain ways is - hence the request for clarification by some on the context of it's use.
  18. Hmm semantics again..... c/o Wiki.... Pikey is a pejorative slang term used mainly in the United Kingdom to refer to Irish Travellers, gypsies or people of low social class. Pikey is also sometimes called a piker in the United States, but a piker in Australia means someone who refuses to do something within a group. Yep, very annoying that someone tries to steal a hose pipe but yet again, surely it's enough to give a description without making some unfounded assumption on the ethnic/ or social origin of the culprit. For all the OP knows he could live round the corner with his very English mum. *crossed posts expat :)*
  19. There are two piches painted and being used on (what is normally open grass) the south east side of the Parks. The sports field behind the childrens' playground is out of use because of seeding, but that is the only one I think. You could easily find out from the Park Manager.
  20. Well the Glazer brothers have been siphoning the profits off there as well. How does one of the most sucessful most profitable clubs in the world go to being a loss making club? These guys are charlatans, no interest in football, just creaming off the profits.
  21. I think whatever the outcome of this, Liverppol will be in serious trouble.
  22. "Houses are only ever worth what people are prepared to pay for them" They are also only worth what multiple of salary banks are prepared to lend, somthing that will have a ceiling limit evntually. The level of growth enjoyed by the baby boomers won't continue, bcause it can't.
  23. It's all just an absolutely shocking mess isn't it.
  24. A case in point is when they closed the right turn round to victoria station to cars. Westminster made 1 million pounds a month in fines because drivers were confused by the signage. The authorities don't always do good job of making things clear for motorists.
  25. Hmmm she's definitely well rid if you ask me lol.
