  7. They are hoping there is a sun reader or two in the ward that they can persuade to vote for them next time... I got one today in the East Dulwich area despite having a "no junk mail" notice up, which makes me think the lib dem leaflet delivery person must have the reading age of a Sun reader not to have understood the instructions... Thankfully it is recycling day today ;-)
  8. I have seen several posts by a "Kitie76" on here that seem a little 'Strange' Is this Katie's younger sister Kitie ? http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/search.php?12,search=Kitie76,page=1,match_type=AUTHOR,match_dates=0,match_forum=ALL If so is she better looking and better educated then our dear Katie (I doubt it but who knows) Answers on them back of a used Kleenex to the usual address, and I am sorry but due to the volume of entries we get we can not return any off them.

  14. Aquarius Moon, are bogoffs such a bargain, I popped into morrisions today to get some pasta, where 500g was on offer of buy two for ?1.50 Yet the one kilo bag was ?1.30 Go figure that as a bargain ! Ariadne, I totally agree with you, as a young man I worked in a green grocers so I do know the early starts equating to wanting to finish at a reasonable time, and I was speculating that maybe the best way to get more of the later shoppers (after work) is to stay open a bit later however each business would end to do the research, evaluate the cost vs profit options and also understand what it would mean to quality of life for both the business people / owners and the shoppers It is however encouraging that so many people do (or want to) shop locally
  15. Twirly A good point, and one that maybe local shops should look into to see what would attract the best business for them. personally I would prefer local shops to survive rather then be crushed under the heal of the supermarkets and I was interesed to watch the demise of Lordship lane when Sainsburys first opened and the subsequent revivial of local shopping once the luster and alure of a big supermarket started to wear off.
  16. Nette what's wrong with the cast off thermal synthetic socks I sent you last year then ... just because I didn't want them, no need to be so blumming ungrateful now :-(
  17. Pugwash I am glad you raised the issue of Milkmen, when I was a child everyone had their milk delivered to the door, along with a few other bits (bread, cakes and cherryaide/cream soda) but as well as providing a delivery service the milkman was often the first person to notice when there was something wrong at a house (sick person or in some cases a death) normally when the milk wasn't taken in from the day before. I have to admit that, whilst the supermarkets are cheaper then home delivery, this is one service that should never have been allowed to be taken over by the supermarkets as it provided more than it was intended for. I have read the comments above with interest since this thread started and it seems that whilst a lot of people prefer to shop locally, the local businesses need to look at things like opening hours to be able to provide the same convenience as the supermarkets / 'local/express' stores. In Rye Lane for example the butchers and grocers open till 9 or 10, and I wonder if that is something that needs to be looked at by independents to compete with the bigger players (and I think this is something that applies to all high streets not just East Dulwich) I guess that may however change their costing model with longer hours and higher wages / lighting and heating bills but imagine how wonderful it would be to get off the bus / train on the way home from work at 7pm and to be able to pick up the ingredients for your supper on the way home.. Thank you to everyone who has commented so far and hopefully more people will put their thoughs and views forward.
  18. Sorry to hear that your van was stolen last night, did you have a tracker on it ? There appears to be an epidemic of VW's being stolen at the moment and hopefully the thieves will get caught soon as I know there are a lot in the area. ianr, I think you would be right in terms of the noise, and I suspect that due to the noise it makes they may well push the van away from it's location and winch it up away from the owners house. I guess (and this may be after the horse has bolted in Paulo's case) the more security the better including trackers, alarm, immobiliser, steering lock (crooklock or the best you can afford) and anything else to stop your vehicle moving or being removed is a worthwhile investment. I hope they recover it soon and I hope that other VW Camper owners also take stock of their security as this is the 2nd or 3rd one on the forum in the last month alone. As a side thought it may well be worth raising this with the local police ward team and ask them to make vehicle theft one of their priorities.
  19. Frankly I am not HP with this going on !
  20. It occurred to me today that I only buy about 20% of my weekly food shopping from any of the supermarkets or their "local" stores. The rest of the time I shop at independent food stores either locally in East Dulwich or wherever I am at the time. Out of curiosity what proportion of your weekly shop comes from a supermarket (or their local /express or similar stores) and when you do shop in the East Dulwich or other independent stores is it cheaper, the same or more expensive then the supermarket ? I am hoping that what I have found is being repeated by others, that more often or not my weekly bill is less then if I did it all in the supermarket . Interested in your views, thoughts and comments on this
  21. What on earth is going on here ?

  23. Hi James A necessary evil to have the gas mains repaired, however this will put additional traffic on other roads in the area, is there anything that can be done to mitigate the impact on side roads that will temporarily become rat runs whilst the work is completed ?
