The only place I can think of is the local STD Clinic at King's. They normally have them. If there are any businesses in East Dulwich wanting to fundraise for World AIDS Day, the HIV Charities can supply them. www.worldaidsday.org On the weekend, I was at a meeting with THT. One of the workers told us that a recent poll showed that 86% of people wouldn't support or give up any of their time for a charity involved in HIV.

Absolutely not. This mock outrage everywhere on the News is pathetic. There seems to be no more information on the case, but just endless speculation on what if some nasty ruffian gets hold of my address and bank details and empties my bank account. Lucky for me, it will be a wasted exercise. Get over it. I think they're all pissed off that there are only two dead women buried in that house and are fishing around for something to fill the News with. Does anyone know if there's a flood due?

Does anybody know about The Gardens in East Dulwich?
cdonline replied to GregD's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I love the Gardens, since I lived on the Rye overlooking it. The Clock House's refurb looks nice, but they really need to sort out the food. It is great in Summer, when you can sit outside. They don't seem that professional. When the family who ran it for many years moved away, it showed. I can't think of anywhere in East Dulwich that matches the Gardens in the way it looks. Particularly in the Summer, it seems so peaceful. Some of the properties could do with some TLC. I still go the Gardens Surgery, the doctors are great. Yey, Dr Costello and they seem to have got rid of that dragon who worked behind the desk. -

It's terrible what happened, but in the context of the events in London at the time, I don't think so.

It seems she doesn't seem to understand that people dislike her intensely. Her public persona comes from being married to a legend. That's all. Take him out off the equation, we no longer care. She obviously wants to continue to have a public role, but she doesn't have a right to it, we don't owe her anything.

What is the least rewarding/most boring job you've had
cdonline replied to atila the gooner's topic in The Lounge
When I was a kid, I worked in Woolworth's. I hated every single moment of every single day. I won't even go in the shop, in case I get some terrible flashback. -
I don't find it offensive, but ManC**t makes me smile.

Camberwell Grove - road closure / opening (Lounged)
cdonline replied to Mr Bojangles's topic in The Lounge
If you have a car, there is always the main road. It is so much more peaceful to walk to work, without cars trying to shortcut everywhere. is it me, or are there a lot of people selling and buying in the Grove recently. -
Where does the money go? Is it used for the environment. The answer to all our problems is not taxing it. Not that I have an answer. Perhaps, they should continue to make the bags thinner and thinner, until we get to a point that they will carry nothing. Then perhaps we'll come up with some other solution. As somebody who always walks to the supermarket, surely it is the car drivers whose shopping habits cause much more damage to our eco system.

What to you think of the Bellenden road area?

The Maudsley / NHS Finances / South London Paper
cdonline replied to Alan Dale's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm not sure I understand the arguments relating to property. I hope that the old days of selling everything off for short term gain are over. Selling off the Windsor Walk property were never going to be a long term solution of not having enough funding to keep the Maudsley's acute services open. Sadly, we are talking about some of the most vulnerable members in our community. They may be small in numbers being admitted, but I find it distressing that these people will have to join the queues at the A & E of King's. You don't see these people able to challenge these clinical decisions at the high court. -
What to you think of the Bellenden road area?
cdonline replied to Crepe Suzette's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
With East Dulwich experiencing a mini crime wave, the chance of being accosted by drug addicts roaming the streets on their way to the needle exchange, drunks spilling out on Lordship Lane and general social unrest caused by Estate Agents, Bellenden suddenly seems like a haven. -
I am no particular supporter of the Council, but the examples given are hardly examples of large scale incompetence. Southwark still has many social problems: poor public housing, poverty, violence that all impact on the level of service they need to provide. They may fail to advertise garages and leave consultation papers on cycle lanes to rot. maybe they have more pressing concerns.

A bit of church singing would be preferable to the KC and Sunshine Band that my neighbour wakes me from my stupor with.

Sean You make a fair point. It may be that poor management has led to the problems. Are we going to pay for an excellent service, or allow it to slide. I know we have had strikes, but there are letters I posted over a week ago have yet to arrive. The building I live in, gets its post delivered between 2 and 3 in the afternoon. I don't really have the answer and this is probably no more than a rant.

I know that there are many who are doing a great job at the Royal Mail, but it seems that there needs to be major changes in the way they work. I used to work at the Royal Mail. I'm afraid it was a horrible time in my life. Sexism and homophobia were rife in their ranks. Knocking off early was institutionalised and nobody seemed to quesiton such things. With most of the middle management promoted from the floor, you couldn't help thinking that they were behaving as 'one of the lads' rather than working towards productivity. Casual staff were treated as though they were the enemy. I'm not sure what the answer is. I can't see that you can run a service that provides a delivery to every door once a day, without serious investment. I understand that people want to protect their jobs, but radical ideas and investment seem the only way forward, unless we accept that we will continue to get a third ratee national mail service.

I don't really understand what could be entertaining or enjoyable for kids having to to spend their day playing at a pub, whether it has a garden or not. This is not about the children, but the choices the parents make.

Which property? In case anyone fancies a shuffty round your flat.

If it was my own business, I would probably be a bit wary. It depends on the crime. If it involved violence, it would be difficult to see beyond that, I'm afraid.

BBC: important institution or passed sell by date
cdonline replied to mamafeelgood's topic in The Lounge
The BBC does many great things. Some of which don't often get mentioned, such as the many Orchestras they run. But of late, I get really angry at the continual snipping at this Government, that seems to go beyond presenting a balanced picture. Speculation has taken over from investigation, even to the point that the speculation becomes the News. The News approach seems a combative one and it often seems that they are taking a stance that all politicians set out to lie. It may be right, but eventually it leaves us all bitter and twisted that everybody in Government is out to decieve us, which I don't believe. -
One of the problem I see, is that people are often unable to make an informed choice about who to see. It can be a bit of a shot in the dark. I have to find counsellors and therapists for pieces of work and you can tell a lot from the way they are on the telephone. A friendly professional voice gives me some kind of confidence that they will be that way in the session. and answerphones- some dreary voiced message, just think, you've got to spend the time listen to them drone on and on. I would have no problem in telling my therapist if I wasn't happy and if I was paying would feel justified, if I could not see a way of working with one, with changing therapist. Being able to build a relationship and feeling relaxed in their presence to feel that you open up is so important. If you leave a session feeling frustrated or angry, it's a signal that something isn't working. We are awash with Counsellors, some who are not up to much, poorly qualified and without the greatest interpersonal skills. I am sure that they have good intentions, but are at best providing people a chance to talk about themselves for 50 minutes. I would recommend that people see a Psychotherapist, either CBT or Systemic. CBT doesn't suit everybody, it can be quite directove, no matter what the Government and NHS say. Psychoanalysis can suit some, but frankly who has the time and inclination and money to commit to the approach. You should be able to see a change in your outlook after a few sessions.

Not your common garden variety spiders (Lounged)
cdonline replied to Catcher-in-the-rye's topic in The Lounge
My flat is currently besieged by ladybirds. Lots of them. It started a couple of months ago, there was a swarm of about 50 on the window. Everyday, twos or threes make a regular appearance in my living room. I don't scream anymore at least. I know there not exactly going to attack me, but in some large numbers, I am a tad spooked.
