When does my child need to start school?
gebbjane replied to Strawbs's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The school year runs from 1st September - 31st august, a child starts school in the September after they have turned 4. So as your boy was born in the year 1st September 2011-31st August 2012, that means he will start September 2016. -
Pre school - morning or afternoon?
gebbjane replied to cmacnew's topic in The Family Room Discussion
From my experience I would do mornings. I started off doing afternoons thinking my daughter and her little brother could spend time together in the morning and I could get a rest in the afternoon when he was sleeping. But found we never did much in the mornings as was not enough time before eating lunch and heading off to school. I did however live a fair way from the nursery though(moved house in the summer - which wasn't planned)so that meant we spent more time travelling. If you live within 5 minutes or so of the nursery then maybe afternoons would work. We subsequently got her a place at the local school nursery which does 2 1/2 days rather than the five half days and this works so much better for us. -
Not necessarily that structured but at camberwell leisure centre on a Monday and Thursday mornings they run a toddler gym with climbing equipment, small trampoline and other bits out. There are instructors there who will help out. I go with a 3.5 year old and a crawling 1 year old as well and find it very manageable with two.
-
I love kidspace in Croydon but I'm unsure if it is doable with 2 under fives and just one adult. I know I wouldn't cope as my 3.5 year old daughter would need me to help her on some parts and couldn't do that with younger one to watch over as well.

Tiny gym at camberwell is on a Monday and Thursday at 10am or 11am and the on Saturdays at 10.15 or 11.15. It cost ?4 for the first child and ?2 each for any siblings.

2nd the tiny gym at camberwell leisure centre, my nearly 4 year old loves it and with a 18 month old as well is perfect with two. I then also venture out up town to a museum a few of times a month which they both love:) Gambados soft play in Chelsea is easy to get to and great but expensive, however if you follow them on Facebook they often have special offer days which makes it worthwhile.

My baby had terrible eczema last summer, with an elder sibling there was no way I could keep him out of the sun. I used Sunsense toddler milk and it was fine on his skin - it's also recommended for elder children. I discussed it with his dermatologist and she was happy for me to use Sunsense. His skin is no where near as bad as it was last year so hoping doesn't flare up in the heat/sun. I have heard of people being prescribed sun cream on prescription.

summer baby party locations wanted
gebbjane replied to colababe's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If looking at a Saturday you can hire the mulberry centre at myatt fields in camberwell for a couple of hours. But gets booked up very early! The centre opens fully onto its own little play area. Albrighton centre off dog kennel hill upstairs room has a big terrace off it , all paving slabs though. -
birthday present ideas for a 2 year old girl
gebbjane replied to pommie's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My daughter got a mini micro scooter for her 2nd birthday, she also loved at that age her toy garage, baby's pushchair, duplo? -
We had this worry and in the end I asked my 21 niece to come and stay for a couple of months (in between jobs luckily). She stayed a couple of weeks before the baby was born and a few after to help keep my elder daughter entertained. As she lived on the other side of london she would disappear at weekends to her own place whilst other half was about, giving us privacy. I had a couple of friends on standby for weekends in case I went into labour, who would have been happy to take my daughter until my niece got back to ours. Do you have a young relative or friend who could do something like this, suppose you also need to have the space to put them up?

Advice on where to buy first shoes
gebbjane replied to Fragolina's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would try either Emmanuelle Marshall who is based in the Ed warehouse on zenoria street or Gently Elephant in Brockley both have been great for fitting and choice for my daughter. My son is a few weeks off walking and I expect I'll head to gently elephant for his first pair. -
Check out the southwark council lets go guide for peckham http://www.southwark.gov.uk/download/9696/lets_go_guide_peckham_nunhead_and_peckham_rye_january_to_march_2014. If any of the children's centres Are local to you they may have a good session worth going to. I know that people often talk about there being a nice playgroup at one of the church halls just off rye lane, maybe someone can post the details if they think it is any good for a 7 month old. Also Bea music bop classes in the victoria inn on bellenden road are great classes for baby's and just drop in, run a couple of times a week.

But if travelling with a pushchair is Shoreditch easier as it has lifts?

Depending where you live, but if you can easily get to forest hill there is a direct train that gets you to Wandsworth common for 7.30. -
Mini scooters - suggest alternatives to the Mini Micro
gebbjane replied to QueenMab's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Can't recommend an alternative but the micro mini does normally come in other colours obviously out of stock with the run up to Christmas. My friends little girl has an orange one and my boy has a turquoise blue. Have seen the orange one for sale here https://www.coolshop.co.uk/catalog/product/81953-mini-micro-orange-neon-mini-micro-scooter-mm0055 but with a bit of a mark-up on price. -
Don't know why I originally put the 9th, they are Sunday 8th.
-
Thank you, will try and pop down too. But the horniman have two concerts on the 8th, including one at 4pm.

I have been recently with my 3 year old and 14 month old. There are a lot of younger babies/toddlers there but my 3 year old daughter is very aware of the younger children there so is always careful not to get in there way. She likes to go to see her brother "singing with his friends" :)
-
For me the issue is price too, I go to a couple of other playgroup type sessions one which is free and another which is a ?1 charge per family and the kids get fruit and snacks. I went to cheeky c's once and the session was no different to the others I go to minus a bit of singing.

If you want to shop local Farmers on lordship lane for card and some art bits also occasionally the post office on forest hill road has some good stuff. But ? shops on rye lane are Good for all that stuff.

Try this website for whitstable too, may be a little cheaper than the fishermans huts. http://whitstableholidayhomes.co.uk
