Planned home birth, facing induction
new mother replied to anna_r's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Sorry no relevant ideas but good luck! it's exciting. -
Gina, good questions. I think the throwing up is so the woman knows she is pg and so she is less able to do physical things with the "tribe".

Digression but, why oh why does Mother Nature make bf so hard that so many women need bf counsellors? So many women do need them. Babies elsewhere in the world depend totally on bf, so it's an awful thought that they might fail to thrive. not so clever Mother Nature!

"I don't care what XYZ at school are allowed to do by their mummies. This is my house." "I don't think Daddy did say yes, did he?" basically I've turned into my own mother.

c-section...some reassurance please...
new mother replied to HOMum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've had elective sections both times and would thoroughly recommend. NO pain while on the painkillers (day of operation plus one day) and then home doing normal things. I decided not to take more painkillers each of those day 3s, and there was zero! (Wondering whether I have ANY nerves in my stomach to explain why no pain after cutting but hey, why complain) I had "spinals" ie not epidurals (which also go into spine). If you do too, you have to watch bp carefully. I have v low bp and it dropped to alarming levels and had to be dealt with immediately both times. The anaesthetist was totally expecting it. Also had dissolvable stitches and they errr dissolved. Was told to wax bikini line as shaving encourages stubble that grows through scar and can get infected. Waxing regrowth is slower and the scars heal ages before it coems through. Was told to take it easy on my return home but didn't bother. I think this activity was a mistake but you will have such a flood of energy you won't be able to bear being in bed. Force yourself! I carried washing and all sorts of things Day 3 onwards both times and I was a fool. good luck. you will have a wonderful experience. -

Pregnant woman smoking down Lordship lane!

Lig, how do you have TIME for all this? I envy you! -
thanks ladies. I'm concerned about booking up in a fit of excitement aNd then only actually making 3 of them or something. (this has been known to happen in our household.)

Summer holiday activities for 9 month old???
new mother replied to Corrie's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks Molly. Yes, we've lost our little routines and I'm surprised to see how dependent III was on them! -
brilliant, this is all really helpful, thank you all very much.

Iain McEwan anything by this guy is beautifully crafted, every single word. For me, personally too heavy and the sort of thing I like to svaour more than holiday reading allows but worth it at some stage.

Hello, can anyone recommend a nursery that takes ch for half day sessions? Ideally, I would like to book either 8am to 1pm or 1pm to 6pm slots, if such an option exists. If anyone knows of somewhere good that does this, I'd appreciate details. THanks very much.

Gosh I feel so broody reading this. I would love a tiny little snuggly one again. Unfort school fees rear their ugly pound sign heads and prevent it. Fuschia, it was the militant and categorical way that the 3 hour wake up was expressed to us that I now realise was ridiculous. One cannot generalise to this extent. Boys will be different from girls and larger babies different again. OTOH, 5 or 6 hours without any food would lead me to waken the baby. As a digressison, you have twins I think. Did they have the same pattern?

Jaundice is not the main issue here. A tendency to jaundice could be exacerbated by a poor feeder failing to flush out liver toxins resulting in the yellow colour. THe real danger is when a baby might go hypoglycaemic as aresult of his/her low blood sugar levels. One thing you could do is to have a blood test done for the glucose level after eg a three hour sleep? PS many congratulations! I'd love to be in your shoes with a newborn all over again. xxx

phasing out of teaching assistants?
new mother replied to crescent's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Understood Fuschia and I agree that Dulwich is an atypical London area but we are talking about ch who have had 6 or 7 years in a school and cannot read. It beggars belief. I can see that, in the past, teachers could have controlled much larger classes as the inherent discipline was much better (lack of father figure or not discuss) but that now these assistant people could be useful depressingly enough simply to have an additional adult around in London schools. -
phasing out of teaching assistants?
new mother replied to crescent's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I wish someone would outlaw the teaching of the existence of exclamation marks till pupils are deemed old enough to know when to use them. I read your note with rising incredulity Nicole. If all this child specific targetted learning is going on, why does one third of our children leave primary school - ie aged 11 ish - unable to attain basic standards of literacy? -
