Perhaps. But I'll save my voice to fight the erosion of employee rights when it's at the hands of rampant capitalism, lousy fiscal policy or for shareholder return. I don't see any evidence if that here. Dulwich gallery is non essential oublic service run on a not for profit basis for the benefit of the people. All I see so far is an operation having to implement a basic restructure in order to pay it's bills. If it was essential public services, nurses, firemen whatever perhaps I'd feel differently about it...

Sorry....but all this talk of "employment conditions" wears a bit thin with me. This is milling about looking an talking about paintings isn't it? And not 15 hours down a coal mine?

Mod God. How annoying is that. Not sure where it came from but I promise it shall be it's only outing.

Smug was applied to Jools not PW. I happen to like the way the Mod God carries himself. He might be surly but he doesn't suffer fools nor is he in rampant ego territory...he's just a bit frosty. It's cool to say you like the Jam. Saying you like Style Council is not cool. But part of the reason for starting this thread was pre-Dulwich Hamlet FC reappraisal. Some of the SC stuff is great and has aged really well.

What's the general consensus? Modfather icon now rightly heading for British music statesman accolades? Or regular purveyor of album sludge rock to a crowd of late forty somethings who refer to him simply as "Weller" down the pub. Not to mention the serial Jools Holland appearances.

It happens. Mine had all they needed. So I went to Franklins and had a steak and a pint to celebrate.

KK is not congratulating his behaviour. He is simply looking beyond the pyre to suggest (as only one of several possibilities ) that perhaps paedophiles are born with a condition that they then struggle to manage. We don't have enough research. That might be abhorrent or impossible to contemplate for some, particularly many Christians. But without perspective and analysis to understand root cause we'll never work out how to fix things. Personally I think if you fast forward a century we'll be dealing with it differently. That said, Miga's point is probably sound..that given the hurt and shock many are suffering locally...this may not be the thread to have that "abstract" discussion. It doesn't mean it's not a valid discussion to have though.

Seems you wont find any racism at Dulwich Hamlet FC, or homophobia. It's old fashioned, family-friendly and socially progressive crowd are unlikely to dish out any abuse. Unless you happen to be a referee who's just made a couple of questionable decisions. And you also happen to have a very neatly styled beard. The repeated chant of "The referee's a hipster!" was one of Saturday's highlights for me.

Can I add a certain type of self righteous my shit don't stink church going harpy to this?
-
Buddug, how do you know that? You don't. It might conveniently fit with your way of rationalising and wrapping up events. But you also might be completely wrong. So why make assumption based judgements. It's shallow thinking.

The problem is that it's such an emotive issue that some aren't open to looking past their own pitchforks. Child abuse in all its forms is a despicable act recognised to be wholly wrong. Nobody on this thread is suggesting otherwise. But without perspective and analysis we'll never understand why people do it or how to help those affected. People are asking and reacting to " How could he have been like this when he did so much good and helped lots of others" . They can't reconcile that and so look for answers. The reality is that 99.5% of humans aren't "good" or "evil". People are complex and a product of their own back ground and upbringing. They are capable of enormous duality. This guy was clearly tormented enough to kill himself and whilst his interests might disgust me, as a human being I can feel sympathy for him and his family. As I feel for the kids in those images. Worth pausing to think about perhaps? And I think you need to distance the views of posters talking about root cause analysis and asking to stick to the facts to date from the accusation of a church cover up. The hysterical near theatrical posts above will not help this discussion.

Compassion. Abhorrent as it is many of those drawn to child abuse images were themselves abused as children.

"We want to be in the Euro but we want you to write of our massive debt incurred through our own fiscal incompetence" isn't going to wash. Give them the boot.

Cool - a good cause and time to get rid of that Heinz minestrone the missus bought last month

Your chances are so small as to think you might not bother. You grow up in rainly small town Scotland with zero previous sporting history, survive the trauma of the Dunblane massacre, spend hundreds of days practicing on a peeling public tennis court, and undertake many hard years of training to rise up to decent junior level. Onc=e day you make Wimbledon..."come on Tim"...bullshit....and get to the second round. You compete well but still the pessimism. The papers, the doubters. You'll never win it. Then several more years of persistence, HARD SLOG training, a US grand slam win, an olympic gold medal and FINALLY.....you smash the doubters by winning the Mens Championship at the worlds greatest tennis competition. And still. And still you have people giving it "AM wont win a grand slam final". Personality aside....what more does AM have to do?

It's good to know there are 43 worse ones in various cesspit backwaters of UK. I can just imagine the Grangemouth branch...empty and under a 200 ft ethanol chimney.

Rings and earrings...are a total no no for me given my facial disposition. Where I grew up (1986 or so) a man wearing an earring on his right ear was a homosexual but left hand side was straight. That was small town Scotland with eighties styling for you.

I'm in love with the new Charlatans album. Understated, soul tinged and self assured. Second coming predicted. I'm snaffling some roundhouse tix for their March gig - looks like the only one in London.

It's the ?65 sterling silver collar stiffeners that get me. You'll never see them and they don't need to be made of silver to perform their purpose. Steel ones can be bought for ?3. Pointless really.

Am I the only one who loves this Henry guy? All above is great advice...Avoid novelty...blingy....and branded unless really subtle also good advice. Also avoid too large/chunky and ones with a chain connector which are too fiddley for every day use. Plain silver is good as it's classic...I also have some great silver squares with a simple amber stone from Portobello market which are great and were approx 40 quid.

That end you have tumbling foothills down to the sea...hidden beaches and the scent of salt.
-
Tourist lite beaches...Avoid the Cote D'Azur and head West but on the Med coast. Ryanair to Perpignan then it's 20 mins by train to the Cote Vemeille and Argeles, Collioure and Banyuls. All those towns along there are worth a look and cheaper than Nice side. Even in summer a decent 3 star hotel is about 70 or 80 euros a night. Avoid August...May June and Sept or early October are great. You got taste Steveo.

Tonight on BBC4 at 9pm....Kiss the Water....fly fishing, meditation and Scotland. A combo better than sex.
