Dodgy church collecting in M&S

Aren't these the people with the 'help centre' on Rye Lane? -
Apparently I registered in '07, although I didn't really post anything / read it much back then.

I don't know about that. I think most people vote in what they believe to be the best interests of the country. There are those that will vote in their narrow, short term interests, but they're a minority. The biggest problem is that people don't understand / aren't interested in the detail. They base their opinions on a few sensational stories and soundbites and use it to interpret their lived reality - which for many outside of London and the SE is one of things declining.
-
I think a lot of people feel that things have declined and that their voices have been ignored. This is why the 'take back control' slogan was so successful. The referendum felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity to really effect change and radically disrupt what was perceived by some to be a broken system. Now they feel that the same political forces that have ignored them for so long are conspiring to stop things changing. I don't think many people are really that interested in the detail - it's more emotional than that. This was their chance to shake everything up, to stand up to an indifferent political class based in London and again, they're being silenced. Obviously its all going to end badly.

Whilst many high streets are boarded up / in serious decline, East Dulwich is arguing over a whether or not they like a mural.

I can't believe Johnson is going to walk back into government, rip a hole in our constitution and destroy existing trade arrangements whilst claiming that Labour are radical extremists. There is nothing more extreme than Brexit.

...For those who would like to see a driver owned Uber alernative: https://neweconomics.org/2017/05/cabfair

I cycle from ED to Kings X every day and the worst bit of the journey is returning back up Crystal Palace Road. Lot's of close passes, or cars overtaking and then slamming on the breaks for speed bumps or oncoming traffic, or ducking back in and cutting you up at the 'islands', or people opening their doors without looking... And yet Southwark have decided that this is the best route to direct people down without making any improvements. It's ridiculous.

I'm not necessarily lobbying for Uber, but I do think the whole business model of thousands of diesel cars driving round looking for fares, with highly paid drivers who've spent years memorising every street in London is a ridiculous anachronism. The black cab monopoly is ripe for challenge.

They amount of pollution they cause while driving around looking for fares, is also unwelcome.
-
I don't like black cabs. Too many "don't go south of the river, mate" experiences and times being trapped listening to some fairly obnoxious and uninvited opinions on the issues of the day whilst stuck in the back. As a cyclist, I am also fed up of being treated as game to be hunted by some cab drivers. They're ridiculously expensive and have a total monopoly and of course, successive mayors have been in hock to them as they have huge lobbying power. Whilst I accept that the 'knowledge' is a high skill qualification, it is also completely redundant in these days of Waze etc. I personally welcome the break up of their cartel.

Sainsbury?s dog kennel hill

I'm surprised these stores are still viable, what with online delivery services. I haven't been to a supermarket for years - can't be the only one. -
They're looking to redevelop that building anyway, extending it and putting flats at the back, so the mural may not be there for long.

Car broken into twice in past week

twinhunters Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > My friend had same brand new car seat still in box > as she?s pregnant, police told her to wrap keys in > silver foil until she gets pouch recommended above > . Mine was also done twice last year :( . Surely the car manufacturers have some liability for this? The keyless locking system is clearly not fit for purpose. -
light polluiton from St John and St Clements School

There is also now a 'double lamppost' outside the school. Literally two streetlights less a foot from each other, which are also opposite two illuminated street signs. The council said one of the lampposts was going to be removed, but there is little sign of it happening two months on. Opposite the school it's permaday. -
I haven't followed the story closely, but as I understand it: Andrew was close friends with Epstein and spent a lot of time with him at his various properties / on his yacht, where young girls (we are told), were a bit of a fixture. Many of these girls were coerced / controlled by Epstein and at least one says she was paid to have sex with Andrew whilst she was still a teenager. Andrew defended Epstein despite clear evidence of his crimes. Andrew's attempts to address questions about his own behaviour left a strong impression in the minds of many that he had things to hide. This is why some people don't necessarily want to be associated with Andrew. Andrew has not been charged with anything, but he has been asked to retreat from the limelight as a result of all this. It seems pretty fair enough to me. He seems to be under less sustained pressure than Meghan Markle, whose main 'crime' seems to be the fact that she is mixed race and has the temerity to come from the US.

Why don't Southwark come up with a radical, area wide plan? Create a low traffic neighbourhood.

They don't want fumes and congestion inside the gates, effecting all the fee payers. No, better leave to gift that to local residents as part of their charity work.
