Religion can have this power, football > probably can't. Politics, the nation state? There are lots of extreme activist groups who would kill and be killed for a cause unrelated to religion. I can't help feeling (I could be wrong), that the cause is almost secondary, a way of rationalising or justifying violent actions which serve an need for power over others and a sense of agency through destruction.
  2. @Otta I'm not sure - I think that there are countless causes you can rally to, if you're looking for a banner to fight under. Religion is a potent one of course, but there are all sorts of cults, clubs and causes which can be used to rationalise violence, if that's your bag. You could make the same arguments about nation states, or politics (think Lennon did exactly this). Whilst I agree that religion did have something to do with this (as I said above), it's much more complex than just this.

And no doubt people have died fighting over that too. People have died fighting over many, petty allegiances, perceived slights, or difference of view. Clearly religion did have something to do with this, but if it hadn't been religion, I can't help wondering whether the perpetrators would not have been undertaking similar violent acts in the name of some other cause, or none.
  4. Fundamentally, these are suburban rail services, which make their money from kent season ticket holders/commuters. If they could, the companies wouldn't stop at inner London stations at all. We're always, therefore, going to have to fight to keep the minimum of service here in zone 2. It's the reason we need a high frequency, tube station, designed to serve an urban population.
  5. Similar to ????- but with me it's my old skateboard rather than football boots.
  6. They actually don't do that badly on responsiveness, (considering how difficult it is to be seen there).
  7. It was suggested earlier in the thread. Any obvious ommissions along the route. Streatham is under-represented.
  8. Something along these lines? 1. The Earl Ferrers 2. The Railway 3. The White Hart 4. The Tulse Hill Hotel 5. Great Exhibition 6. EDT 7. Hamlets Bar 8. The Victoria Inn 9. Montpelier 10. Beer Rebellion 11. Hobgoblin 12. New Cross House 13. Amersham Arms ..Bit light at the Streatham end though
  9. Sorry to hear of your loss.

As I said, priorities > :) > > Louisa. Yeh, there is nothing judgemental in your hackneyed 'middle class' stereotype. No one abused the original poster, or called them racist, or any of the other things which have been implied. They questioned the assumptions made, based on some pretty random associations and which were glaringly obvious to all. The fact that some 'insightful' peeps were waiting for others to point out the strange leap from 'phone being left somewhere' to 'it was stolen by a gypsy' says it all really. You could argue that it didn't need to be said, but not that it was not self-evident to think it.
  11. There was no suggestion in the original post that the cyclist didn't have lights. Someone saying (quite admirably) "I didn't take as much care as I should when opening my door", becomes yet another 'bloody cyclists being irresponsible' thread. Of course cyclists should have lights on when it's dark, but that's a complete non-fecking-sequitur in this case.
  12. Hi Resham, As you are concerned about financial governance and value for money, please may I ask you to confirm your support for an investigation into the Heygate Scandal? The mishandled sale of this 22 acre site has led to a significant financial loss for Southwark taxpayers. Furthermore, it has significantly reduced the number of socially rented properties available and seen many hundreds of residents displaced. You can find more detail here: http://www.change.org/p/heygate-estate-scandal-demand-an-investigation

  14. FFS. Someone loses their phone and concludes that it's been stolen by a gypsy based on some fairly random associations.... yes, people are going to question their conclusions. To claim that this is unreasonable, let alone abusive to the OP is nonsense (the comments relating to parenting etc. which came later aside). It may have been 'obvious' to some that the OP was 13, but I have to say that it wasn't to me. How ironic that people jump in to make accusations of smugness and sanctimony.

They questioned the fact that she had jumped to what seemed a pretty random conclusion about the perpetrator, based on the events as she'd described them. Whether she's 13 or not (and it wasn't obvious that this was a kid posting), that's still a fair thing to point out.
  16. I've always preferred crab to be honest.
  17. I'm pretty sure it's the dachshund personally.
  18. It's sailing close to the wind there. Any minute they're liable to turn from cuddly indie to rapacious corporate evil doer.
  19. At what point does a successful, independent business (which obviously everyone applauds), turn into a dastardly, evil chain store (which we all abhor, naturally)? 4 stores, 10, 100?
  20. yeah, must admit I had been trying to resist.... But even putting the use of 'gypsy' aside, the case against the alleged perp isn't exactly watertight.
  21. I can't help thinking that at ?5 a lobster, something is probably wrong with how it's being reared.
  22. You dropped your phone and when you went back, couldn't find it. 'some people' thought they saw an old lady pick it up. Your friends said they met your friends mum who said something similar happened to her and it was a gypsy?!? Well my brother's cat's mother's friend met a man who once saw a dachshund steal an ice cream. I think I agree with Peckhampam view on this. Sorry you lost your phone though.
  23. Spot on Spark67. To the miserablists- move along, nothing to see.
  24. Agree that the queues are pretty mad, but great to see a new business doing so well in first couple of days, let's hope it continues.
  25. So why is that a problem?
