Do the current crime figures reflect the numbers of school children who get mugged on a daily basis coming home from school? Most parents report them, but does it depend on what is stolen from them? If money is stolen and not a mobile phone, is this part of the statistics?

This is common practice in charity shops. Unfortunately, it not only happens in charity shops, it also happens if you send containers stocked with clothing overseas. The local staff help themselves first.

So, does the system encourage/discourage teen pregnancies? I would have to say ......it does both. On one hand it provides a safety net for teens who have genuinely found themselves in a difficult position, with no extended family to help them, and helps them get back on their feet. On the other, it allows teens to leave home, get a flat, become mothers, reap the benefits of the system without a stigma attached. What is best for the baby? Did I summarise this accurately? I am not trying to be harsh, but I think teens need to have both sides of the picture clearly explained to them before they make a decsion. As parents, do we do that?

Cassius I think you said the magic word...."give" rather than what one can "get". Being able to give to children a life they can be proud of is important, I think.

Yes, I wonder what the children would say if asked........so far, only adults have taken part in this discussion. Are there any children who would like to give their opinion on being raised by teenage mums? Oh, I forgot, they don't have a voice.

Chav, As you implied yourself, if a young teen is kicked out of her home, or has run away for various reasons, would she still have extended family to help her?

Chav, I am afraid that social workers have become the grandparents and extended family. Not all young mothers have real extended family to help them.

Maxi, thank you for giving us the facts. I think this may be something for parents to take on board, and see their responsibilities when trying to help a teen decide what to do. Brendan, our society's values need addressing somehow, or the idea of children raising children will have no boundaries, only benefits.

Rose, that doesn't sound hard...it sounds like a sensible decision for you given your age and circumstances. The stigma is no longer there in our society, which is why girls and their parents have such a tough decision to make. I agree, you did the right thing for you. Charlie, I also agree with you that vulnerable moms and children deserve our help, but are there some also using the system? Can you honestly say that everyone in this situation is vulnerable and needy? Some may be encouraged by their parents to get pregnant so that they can leave home. Is that too much of a shock to consider? Is the system, well meaning as it is, actually meeting the needs of the children or simply the young mums?

Do you think that's an incentive for teens to get pregnant? As a parent, do you have any rights up to a certain age? Sorry, I was not aware that teens were given council housing.....below a certain age...does anyone what that age is?

Rose I really appreciate your honesty, it must have been very difficult for you to come to that decision. Were you afraid of telling your parents? What did you think would be their response? Other girls in your situation may have handled it differently and considered the pregnancy something to be proud of. That is the dilemma for girls and parents. How should the parents deal with the situation? If the pregnancy goes ahead, will the teen be given a flat? Is there any age limit whereby they have to stay at home if under a certain age?
