From my experience late teenagers may well know more than there parents. It is good what you are doing but I would not make out this is a London or city problem. There are loads of good infographics on the net - this one shows high use of speed in Wales, vs e in London https://www.indy100.com/article/the-map-of-england-and-wales-by-drug-of-preference--bkeS7SJxxvZ Cannabis use highest in the West Country https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/749806/Drug-use-UK-West-country-cannabis-capital-London-cocaine-ecstasy Although this one suggests coke is the choice of the big Cities: https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/news/plymouth-news/drugs-map-uk-reveals-plymouths-1093147 Thanks for distracting me from politics. I wonder what was said in the Queens Speech about tackling drug use. Oh no, I've relapsed. Give me some mind altering chemicals now.

Did any of us, as Labour members, vote for him in the LP leadership election? Did anyone switch parties between 17 and 19. My Brother in Law, who is a leaver and wanted border controls, but not stupid (talking about intelligence rather than moral compass, did. I've not heard any members admit to making a mistake. My only conversations so far are that it was all down to Brexit and not policies and leadership. It would be good to have some informed discussion. As for me? I struggled to vote for Corbyn in '17 and ended up tossing a coin (he lost), but in '19 saw no alternative. I'm wondering why those who were so attracted to him must have fled - or perhaps Brexit didn't have the same relevance two years ago. And I expect that much of the attraction was more to do with how bad May was campaigning. As for 'what went wrong' Poly Toynbee did an excellent analysis. A few quotes from this: Given the worst choice in history, the public preferred him to his opponent. How bad did Labour have to be to let this sociopathic, narcissistic, glutton for power beat them? That?s the soul-searching question every Labour member, office-holder and MP has to ask. How bad did Labour have to be to let this sociopathic, narcissistic, glutton for power beat them?? Boris Johnson delivers a victory speech to Tory party members. Labour was disastrously, catastrophically bad, an agony to behold. A coterie of Corbynites cared more about gripping power within the party than saving the country by winning the election. The national executive committee, a slate of nodding Corbynite place-persons, disgraced the party with its sectarian decisions. Once it was plain in every poll and focus group that Corbynism was electoral arsenic, they should have propelled him out, but electoral victory was secondary. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/dec/13/jeremy-corbyn-labour-manifesto-antisemitism-brexit

So Corbyn and the Labour Party should have nailed their colours to their chest and supported Brexit without a referendum (difficult as they had already blocked a softish deal), to retain Workington and West Bromwich whilst confusing their Metropolitan elite in London, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. Discuss.......

I was forced onto a chug chug train on Saturday, as having booked the tickets a mere five days in advance it was the only cheap option apart from one that stopped at every station from Northampton to Euston. It was like a bus. Many of the lines were electrified in the late 60s when the Wilson Government in its White Heat Technology phase. Ironically much of this lead by Tony Benn as Minister of Technology at a time when we were forging ahead on developing and building the next generation of nuclear power stations. Anyway sorry for the history lesson but my experience on Saturday shows the need to simplify, and preferably reduce prices, on our privatised rail network and as important electrify the whole bloody lot not the half assed attempt of recent governments. Anyway I digress but relevant to the new government. Here's some more of the history lesson www.theguardian.com/science/political-science/2013/sep/19/harold-wilson-white-heat-technology-speech

Points I was making were (a) the value of debating how useless/unliked/incompetent Corbyn is. we know that so what is the point of reiterating. (b) That JC's full ambitions could not be achieved due to financial and political factors and that five years would not be long enough © That JC was voted in by a much larger number of Labour members than BJ so you could surmise that a tiny number have ended up influencing the move to the right and the future shape of the country. (d) a hard Brexit will screw up Torries modest spending plans (e) that I have no answers - I'm pleased that you enjoy my post but do you? > > > Your posts are alway so peculiar and convoluted - > can't even work out properly who you are > supporting so won't bother. There are no solutions > at this late stage. You just have to stick with > what you think is right for most (how anyone can > even think that's what Johnson wants apart from > his elite mates) or vote tactically.

Replace Libyan Students with Jeremy Corbyn -
Not really sure what you are getting out of this. Yes he not competent to be the next prime minister. Yes he has many faults. But WTF the other bloke. I don't think that JC could drag us that far to the left as (a) resistance in his own party (b) practicalities in reversing 30 years of privitisation © the money would in deed run out (d) he couldn't achieve it all in one term. But he was voted in by a far more sizable number than BJ, not all were extemist/rabid which is far truer of the Tory party. Can we have some positive and practical solutions? Even the more modest spending plans by the Tories will be in pieces once the hard/harder/no deal Brexit happens. Talking about competence have none of you heard of Attila the Stockbroker?

An ode to Jezza (with thanks to Attila the Stockbroker) Just look at him - he's the scourge of the land He?s Colonel Gadaffi?s favourite man He eats babies and he?s a commies too And he?s got [disease of your choice) and he?ll give it to you With scaly tails and horns and hooves He'll undermine everything that moves You can read about him in the daily press: He's worse than the Russians in the DHSS [DWP] If your telly goes wrong or your car won?t start you can bet your life that he played his part If your team doesn?t win or you miss the bus then ten to one it was down to him If a dog runs off with your copy of the Sun and brings it back with the crossword done If someone smacks you in the head or you find a terrapin in your bed He did it - and everything else as well He imported Neighbours to these shores He personally started both World Wars He broke your Gran?s Coronation mugs He sold Ben Johnson all his drugs He caused the Plague and the Great Fire too and we brought The Price Is Right? to you He pushed Robert Maxwell over the side He took Marc Bolan for his last ride or you find a terrapin in your bed He did it - and everything else as well Cos he's the party leader from Hell!

Not sure if this was picked up, from Five Live reported in the Standard and elsewhere. Sour grapes or the truth (or both): Donald Trump and Boris Johnson share an ?elastic relationship with the truth?, the former chairman of the Conservative Party has said. Lord Patten also accused Mr Johnson or his senior adviser Dominic Cummings of turning the Conservative Party into a ?rather narrow sectarian English nationalist party?.

I've suggested to the BBC remaking the Monty Python argument sketch; you can't e-mail the show directly and apparently there have been complaints of bias due to BJ ducking the issue. Well he did. That's not bias, that's fair journalism. I've noted too misteaks in my earlier post so it's off to Rees-Mogg's plaice for some correcktion.

I've tried not to watch too much TV debate, or jump on the knocking BoJo bandwagon in terms of his behaviours. But Andrew Marr today was a bit of a shocker. No attempt to answer the question, it was like they were having parallel conversations. Maybe it is like a silent disco with two people dancing to separate tunes. The lack of substance was frightening, just repeating that everything was Labour's fault, JC is a terrorist sympathiser and 120 days as PM holding no responsibility for the 10 years before. Ckakrabarty on the other hand, whether genuine or not, refused to politicise Friday's events. I'd refused to join in the common view that BoJo comes across as smirking but a smile was coming to his lips as if it was all a game. Dare I say that JC for all his faults (poor leadership, general incompetence) does have much greater gravitas CAn someone produce a video based on the Monty Python argument sketch - Cleese/BoJo Palin/Marr

Rather than ban Xmas this could have been a better worded thread. You can't ban a festival under a western democracy. But a good question anyway about the value and meaning. Is it a religious festival? I expect for most not, and carols etc all rather a token. A pagan festival? Probably the origins and more of interest to me. A family celebration and good will on earth? With the country divided it doesn't feel that way. A consumerist experience giving joy to those who like buying presents, receiving them and making money? That is the way it feels. So essentially a load of nonsense but I can't bzn it. I do take exception to growing things only to throw them away, the whole general waste of unneeded/unwanted gifts and the tat. Trees just left on the street being the worse example. I'll buy a tree to show my support of peace, harmony and love and then expect someone else to pay to dispose of it. And excessive decorations? If you are the person on Westwood Park WTF is that about? All rather vulgar. Ironically I liked the houses on Lenard Road Cator Park, that ended up having to take it in turns but collected money for charity.

Pressed the wrong link and came to the earliest thread on this site. If we ever think EDF is dull nowadays see how awful it was then! Are any of the original posters still around to defend this view. PS this is a facetious post so don't get on your high horses.

Taps with old fashioned washers v ceramic discs
malumbu replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in The Lounge
not impressed with my kitchen ceramic mixer - only lasted a few years before having to replace the disc units and started dripping again recently. Cleaned them up and OK now - so may be a problem in hard water areas. That said ceramic taps are here to stay and I don't see others complaining. Not replaced the old school tap washers in bathroom which have been there two decades -

You'll find that black cabs are more polluting, they are a very powerful lobby and are allowed to stay on our roads than other commercial vehicles. The switch to plug in hybrids will take a long time

So vfm/efficient provision of utilities all seems to be based on regular switching all seems to be based on regular switching and the operator offering you tempting add-ons. There is no obvious reward for customer loyalty and worse still you if you don't switch you will pay more. The special offers all appear to be for new users. There's stuff on line about how to get a better deal, essentially don't blink first. Personally I'd like to see a world where everyone gets a good deal on essential services. I'll have to wait for Jezza to nationalise the network. A long long wait I'll expect. PS BT customer services superior to TalkTalk

Apols, no doubt a very old issue/thread. Time to renew my account. Last year after being fleeced by TalkYalk, slow speed, poor helpline and unreliable I had to return to BT, who I vowed never to go back to. TalkTalk offered me cheap packages but could not provide fibre, and told me we simply weren't on this network in the area and that no other provider could offer me this due to the lack of infrastructure. BT simply ran a new line from the box down the street and I am getting about 20MB which will do (not quite 36). I'm not interested in sports packages, superfast gaming and the like and it is generally fine for browsing, video calls and internet telly. So (a) how best to negotiate with BT (b)now they have put fibre in I assume that other providers can use this - it seemed to be some sort of 'grey' package ie don't tell the other providers we do this.

I was quite surprised at the amount of racism in New Zealand, at the time thinking it was a more progressive country. But a colleague on my return reckoned that outside of the metropolitan bubbles it was the same in the UK. This was the 1990s and the world has changed since then. I was hoping to provoke some views from the New World and elsewhere. Whilst I am sounding a little pompous I do like to hear counter arguments, and objective views as a whole. I could also add 'homo and trans phobia' - back to the amnesty I shudder at some of the jokes that I may have made once, even though I considered them harmless at the time.
-
Would any kiwis like to come on line and apologise for their racism? I was there 25 years ago and heard abuse of Asian kids at the Basin Reserve Cricket Ground in a one day match in Wellington. We'd stay at B&Bs to be told by the owners that New Zealand had a 'black problem' as well as the UK - at the time there was a programme of tribunals to determine reparation for the colonials treatment of indigenous people. Aussies are welcome too and for my part I apologise for any offence innocent comments may have led to in my less enlightened past. I'm also sorry for enjoying the sledging that the NZers were giving a young Shane Warne. A facetious title but a serious matter as it was disappointing to hear of the abuse Jofra Archer got today. Of course the UK isn't innocent.

What is the existing model. I can then Google it to see how compatible a digital replacement may be. When you say thermostat are you talking about your central heating programmer? Thermostat simply turns things off when a temperature is reached.
