Should cyclists have the same speed restrictions as motor vehicles?
malumbu replied to tedfudge's topic in Roads & Transport
Here's some homework. Write a submission to the Transport Secretary on what there should be a licensing scheme for bikes, how this would be delivered, costs, enforcement and the benefits. Government policy, analysts, lawyers and enforcers can't. But what do they know? Every time this is suggested as red meat to the Mail etc the poor souls in active travel have a wtf moment before having to give ministers a reality check. And meanwhile the usual tosh on drivers standards come out in this website. Passing the test does not make you a good and responsible driver. -
Rather unfair to base things on isolated incidents. John Lewis score 4 stars on Trust Pilot with most reviewers giving 5 but a sizeable number giving 1, from a quick look predominantly due to perceived poor customer service. I expect customer service has deteriorated due to staff cuts as it negotiates choppy water. Not as extreme as say BA who were exemplary but that was when they and other national airline had a virtual monopoly and charged accordingly before the budget airlines changed everything (and despite disappointment with BA customer service isn't nowhere near as awful as Ryanair. Stick Tomy recommendation of JL for mattresses and others can do their own research and make their minds up accordingly.

How many people have been hurt in the area because of unsociable cycling. I expect a big fat zero. Have you any evidence to the contrary? -
I don't believe that there are that many people who are not aware, or not looking at the sign. Most people will be doing a routine journey - school run (I can't pretend it doesn't exist) or driving to work (ditto). They will not be repeat offenders.

I assume that this is a joke. Not a funny one. Or if you mean this I'd be worried. -
John Lewis, found them helpful and ethically I'm happy shopping there

in deed don't know why I mix Galloway's short lived party with Farage's

Brexit does have a bearing on costs. Worse that the masses were promised cheaper prices.

I'm not a Christian, nor do I follow other faiths but really don't understand all of this. I am happy to embrace the season of good will, and put the decs up. I may even sing the odd carol. But to buy an Xmas Tree, at some cost, and then dump it afterwards - what is it about the season of good will you are celebrating? Good will to your other neighbours who end up paying for the disposal through their council tax? Even I am allowed to odd rant from time to time, two with my issue about chewing gum!

One thing we agree on FM. I expect that is not new and I remember looking out from a 5th floor over a pavement near Traf Sq 20 years ago and asking what the numerous spots were on an otherwise prestige light grey footpath. Some local authorities put out gum bins but as with all litter just don't drop it. And fag ends. And disposable vapes. And nitrous oxide cylinders!

Sunak's desperate attempt to get the motorist's vote had no great impact in the election, I expect that many diehard petrolheads had already switched to Reform Until Sunak every government since Blair had been committed to reducing dependency on the car, increasing active travel and improving the environment. To varying degrees of success.

Street trees: when is it time to call time ?
malumbu replied to ed_pete's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
That because I work in transport. As I work in transport I know quite a lot about it. Not everything. But a lot. And I know people who can also tell me what is going on. And I have this massive resource of information at my finger tips. Called the internet. So I try to base my views on real information rather than perception. Rather than what somebody told me down the pub, or on X, or on Nextdoor.com, or someone interviewed in the street by the BBC, or the Daily Mail, or UnHerd.com, or a Jeremy Vine programme. I can't comment on LBC and only once spent five minutes on GB news. And I don't automatically believe everything in the Guardian, Radio 4 comedy, Have I Got News for You or Led by Donkeys even if the politics often aligns with mine It's just lazy to go straight to the stereo types about national and local government, and insulting to label most public and civil servants viewing them as biased, incompetent or ignorant (and the 'I know better'). And with the opportunity to ask questions through the official channels why so many instantaneously resort to social media rather than trying probing themselves. -
Cameras are placed where people may ignore rules eg cutting into the bus lanes to avoid stationary traffic. I see it fairly often. It is right to use cameras to enforce roads where drivers do not behave themselves. If you do not transgress, you do not pay. Simple. Speed cameras are a matter for the police, and tend to be at incident hot spots. It's sad that some of the speed cameras are not installed until there has been a death or serious injury. Southwark is no different to most London Boroughs, even Tory ones. Some go much further. The thread started with someone who was disappointed to get a penalty notice as they were unaware and didn't see the signage. I have sympathy having my own fair share of penalty notices - only one or two this millennium. It's gone the way of most of threads, a small hard core who repeat the same view, Southwark are crooks, and, often, cyclists are a menace.

Rather than have a go at Southwark, contact them, they will employ at least one arborist who will know far more than most people on this site. Here's one: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shaun-murphy-morris-03b7b665/?originalSubdomain=uk -
I hope you had it marked on the bike register. Many stolen bikes end up on Gumtree (mine did) so check listings. https://www.gumtree.com/for-sale/sports-leisure-travel/bicycles/uk/srpsearch+condor if the listings is a copy and paste from the bike company website that is almost definitely stolen, or details are scant. When they talk about how long they had the bike, the sort of journeys, what they have done to maintain and improve it etc they will be genuine. I've got no advice on how to do a sting and get it back,
-
You've said that Southwark is setting traps to catch drivers on school streets. I've presented data that shows that in recent years relatively few penalty notices are issued in Southwark in school streets. Am I right or wrong? Perhaps others can decide.

You can submit a Freedom of Information request, It is quite easy. You insist on posting on your interpretation rather than seek information, or rely on selective publications that support your views.
-
Dunno ask Southwark. It is easy to do a FOI request. I don't understand why you keep posting here rather than go through official channels. Tedious.
-
Send a FOI request into Southwark to get their stats on such offences, I expect that they are relatively small. In fact a journo has and Southwark was one from the bottom of the list of London Boroughs being dwarfed by even some Tory boroughs I think that this shows it is best to do your research rather than the knee jerk they are all out to get me. https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-11709425/London-motorists-stung-400-000-fines-driving-near-schools.html 2021 I(when I assume many were only recently introduced 622 A year later - word had got round 275

Perhaps the various threads covering the same stuff can be amalgamated. This is becoming like groundhog day.

Elon Musk's attack on UK government / democracy

F'kin hell, even for the Torygraph that is one nasty journo. They are obviously kowtowing to Trump, competing to be the ,51st state with Canada and Greenland. -

Gosh trees producing fruit, whatever next. You don't want to park under an elderflower when in fruit, if the fruit does get you the birds poo is purple. -
Cheers Ian, I was looking for these. Fascinating subject! Sorry forgot to add school streets to your compendium of Labour rip offs.

Pretty repetitive on the transport section. I like a good discussion and this does raise wider issues. I miss banks more than post office branches which tend to be part of other stores. A few other threads on the Lounge, come on over. Or 🐕 💩
