  1. If you are against the increase in fuel duty then you are surly against fuel duty full stop. It has not kept up with inflation, I'm talking about getting it back on track. Ultimately road user charging is the solution. Labour will probably compromise on agricultural land inheritance by raising the cap so it generally catches the Clarksons of the world who are not bothered about profits from land beyond, in his case, income from a highly successful TV series and the great publicity for the farm shop and pub
  2. This is not a Trojan Horse to get my political agenda over. This is a thread to talk about cycling. I think it is rather sad to resort to criticism. There are other threads where you take every opportunity to do this. Not this one please. A bit more respect is welcome across the forum.
  3. Thanks Rockets, I'm not scoring points, if a road is hazardous due to the layout, infrastructure, behaviour of some motorists, pot holes and the like then it is not pleasant riding on it. Going down into Peckham is where I often have electric delivery bikes overtaking on the inside. I look out for them but it is a hazard I can do without. Kathleen, you clearly don't like cyclists. This is a thread for cyclists to discuss where it is good, and less good to cycle and maybe some ideas on how to make it better for riders. There is enough negativity elsewhere on this site.
  4. Which shops are closing, which businesses don't support the changes? Four years since Covid and the Village seems to be doing alright. That is what I see with my own eyes.
  5. Those who live in the modern world can scan cheques on those little computers they keep in their pocket that also act as a phone. If you can find a bank many will have devices to take money out and also scan cheques. That said I haven't cashed one for years or written one even longer. As far as I know the only use of cheques now is buying the Countryfile Calendar.
  6. People are switching to electric cars irrespective of fuel prices. 100s of millions that could be spent on hospitals and schools for example have been lost due to fuel duty freezes and a supposedly temporary reduction. Fuel is relatively cheap at the moment. With a stonking majority when is it time to rightly take on motorists? Farming, I simply referred to Paul Johnson of the IFS who knows more about the economy that you, I and Truss will ever know. Food? Au contraire. It's too cheap, too poor quality and our farmers are squeezed by the supermarkets and unnatural desire to keep it cheap. A lot less takeaways and more home cooking with decent often home produced, food should benefit most in our society. Be honest, you simply don't like Labour.
  7. At least two of you who are angry about LTNs also profess to be cyclists. It would be wonderful to have your views on cycling in the area.
  8. A silly title, Truss set such a high bar I doubt whether anyone can ever match her level of incompetence and level of delusion. Paul Johnson spoke on inheritance tax on one of the political programmes. Any inheritance tax is controversial, and he considered farmers should not be an expectation I was underwhelmed and incredibly disappointed that there was no increase in fuel duty; Labour chickened out and I will be telling Rachel's sister this view. Paul Johnson has written a good article on his analysis and that the budget was not at all revolutionary https://ifs.org.uk/articles/budget-was-non-event-and-kicked-big-decisions-down-road If you want something to worry about look over the Pond Reality check - pound crashed against the dollar and other major currencies following Brexit vote - 1.70 to 1.20, and has never recovered Truss's mini budget sent it to almost an all time low 1.08, from around 1.20 the week before Reeves budget it lost a cent, and fared worse since Trump won the election.
  9. I'm happy. The shops are happy too irrespective of views above. Being in the area in Tuesday there were many other happy people. Edited to add: The Captain and his dolly mixtures are also happy
  10. Sadly they don't do the full range of post office services
  11. Someone is peed off due to a theft and wanted to vent. I'm not sure what response they were after beyond 'there there', or put the thief in prison and throw away the key. I've had a few thefts in the past but not felt the need to share here. Like it or not but a thread like this is open to some mirth. I was tempted to post after offering a good fridge free of charge on this site the person failed to turn up, and the scrap people cut the compressor and left the rest for me to take to the tip. But I got over it. Street WhatsApp shares stuff like this - generally don't leave thing out in, or near the street, as some will think they are there to take. I digress..... Looking forward to some witty comments 😁
  12. Let's keep this on the subject please. I have been cycling particularly in Southwark for many years. I think generally the roads are good for cycling. Avoiding some of the issues with road management in recent years it would be good to hear from other cyclists. Starting off - Lordship Lane is OK, generally not having speeding drivers. You have to adopt an assertive position coming down to Court Lane and make use of the bus Lane coming up to Toolstation. Underhill can be busy but going down the hill you can get to around the speed of free flowing traffic and up the hill past the cemetery there are no parked cars so room for cars to pass. Roads around Dunstan's can see impatient drivers. Forest Hill road can be a bit chokka and not convinced you need the lights by the Rye. Going further down towards Peckham it can be horrid during rush hour with no easy way of passing stationary traffic. Four roads I don't like but have to use are Sydenham Hill poor surface and not space for cars etc to pass with proper clearance. Really needs a bike lane up hill, but not sure who owns the verge. Honor Oak Road, a race track with some narrow sections. Brenchley ditto. Honor Oak Park from the hill towards the station in both directions awful surface, narrow road. Need to get rid of parking on one side and bike lane going up the hill. So other cyclists, what are your faves and which roads should be improved? Beyond Greendale are there other offers road routes or could we have more? And do you like the hills? We have our own Cols 😊
  13. I was lucky enough to see West play Brunel in the state opening of St Pancras International. Just found out that Penny Wooly/Archer died at the age of 105, playing the part until she was 103 - and the character about to celebrate her 100th on the programme https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1wn1zl3q5qo
  14. Why is this on the transport part of the forum? If it goes wider than East Dulwich then surely the Lounge. It is about a nice public location. The impact on transport is covered over numerous other threads. As for sourcing of stone I expect virtually all of us are guilty of purchasing stuff that we maybe shouldn't. Single use plastic, fruit and veg from half way round the world and products containing palm oil being some obvious ones. And Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat if you want to talk about poor treatment of workers.
  15. This comes up on YouTube - the sort of only an idiot would not buy this It's a electric ceramic heater that is apparently far cheaper than central heating. I expect that it defies the law of physics, akin to cold fusion. But anyone know any more? https://lumiheat.com/
  16. I got ripped off for the equivalent of a couple of quid in India many years ago. Perhaps I should have started a thread. Fortunately I found a home on the ticket collectors thread as it was related to scams on public transport. Thank you for reading.
  17. Thanks Earl, I'll check it out
  18. Reminds me of touts in India, showing you to a bus seat, but we're not official. And the guy that sold me a meal on the train only to disappear. I'm probably a pound or two out of pocket I also got threatened by a drunk railway bloke in Hungary who tried to take money off me All good anaddotes!
  19. There was also a shooting in Walworth. Sadly there are murders every day. Still not sure why this has been posted. I find out about local events on this website but don't usually use it as a news source. Edited to add, not wishing to offend of course, as the OP has made some good contributions,
  20. I expect that virtually everyone is aware if this. Was there a point in posting?
  21. Oh sorry, I thought you were talking about pipe tobacco
  22. It used to be an excellent pub in the 80s, 90s and 00s, and no doubt decades before
  23. I prefer Old Holborn. I should be more imaginative. https://www.davy.co.uk/wine-bar/segar-and-snuff-parlour/ I may try this place
  24. I got responses, just not very good. I could have written a better one myself. No doubt her team replied. She has a good record of dealing with difficult family issues I'm reliably informed. I go out my way to call elected representatives by formal names. Mayor Khan and former Mayor and former PM Johnson. Off this site I just called them by their surnames. I detest the whole move to first names for politicians. It started with Johnson, whose first name I won't use. He is not my mate, he is not cuddly and funny. He is a self serving liar who was happy to screw the country up for political gain. I asked the Beeb to not use his first name but they fobbed me off. I use Ellie here for effect, to make out we are on close terms, which we aren't. And for effect, ie complain through official channels before posting on social media. I go threatened by my MP once, a long time ago, that anecdote is for the pub
  25. This is a forum to discuss issues,; could you tell me where in the 100s of posts responding to my generally thoughtful and informed posts, you have actually discussed my points rather than dismiss them? I struggle to see why my last post would result in your response. You are most welcome to disagree with what I post, but at least be prepared to have a proper discussion.
