Because it is not a priority for the police, but they do take action, many 1000s are prosecuted each year, the numbers were fallen due no doubt social pressures as well as increased number of points and no doubt the size of the fine. Interesting reading here: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/seatbelt-and-mobile-phone-use-surveys-2023/mobile-phone-use-by-drivers-england-2023 I'm on the road almost daily and I see maybe twenty or thirty a year, of course 20 or 30 too many. The above report shows that it is vans more than cars and two thirds holding the phone as opposed to having it to the ear, many no doubt texting, or on dating sites (that last comment is not facetious). As an experienced cyclist I can tell from the driving more often than not that they are on their phone, and tell them to get off it. Others I know will record this on their helmet cam and pass onto the police. Yes it is dangerous and yes government should consider what more can be done. I personally think it is dreadful behaviour. But if you go to some countries it is the norm. This could be used at speed awareness courses, schools, public information campaigns, test centres etc. from the film Whiplash where he has a bad crash after just being on his phone. Not sure what you mean by experiment. Its just another evolution of mass and one to one communications from drumming, to beacons/smoke signals, semaphore, telegraph and so on. All came with massive improvements to life but no doubt downsides. Did you hear about the argument between ships on the same side during the Napoleonic Wars as they got their semaphore flats in a twist? Now etiquette is another thing and it appears that 95% of Whatsapp users don't understand this. I posted a guide to common sense on Whatsapp on a thread here a couple of years ago eg don't have private conversations on a group chat, but there was no discussion. I find the Whatson Section, for sale and recommendations very useful. There appear to be far too many angry people on some of the other threads. This Forum seemed to have peaked in constructive discussion a few years ago, judged by the massive decline in wider chats on the Lounge. Edited that I have a wide definition of social media as per OED: websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking [eg this site, WhatsApp] In respect to the nonsense, lies, propganda, hate crime etc I expect we had this ever since humans learned to communicate, eg 1930s Germany or from Wiki: primitive forms of propaganda have been a human activity as far back as reliable recorded evidence exists. The Behistun Inscription (c. 515 BC) detailing the rise of Darius I to the Persian throne is viewed by most historians as an early example of propaganda. Of course it doesn't make things right and a headache for centrist governments and politicians globally.

Heavens, everyone knows better in hindsight. But it's a question of what is acceptable to society. I want reductions in the number of killed and seriously injured😞 which if you look at my post on another thread has plateaued. 20 mph in more areas is surely one way forward. If you feel that current KSI numbers are acceptable and oppose further measures due to some fabricated culture war or you don't believe that rights to driving should not be curtailed then that is disappointing. It's a shame that anger from a minority over local measures to reduce emissions, reduce car journeys and promote active and sustainable travel have spilled over into anything affecting driving, including policies to improve road safety.

Well East Dulwich was a bit rough at the end of the last century but it hasn't been ever like the above unless I am missing something -

Why are you condoning such dreadful behaviour, particularly from a parent who can afford to send their child to an expensive and prestigious private school? -

A bit of a daft post making sweeping statements about the country. Most of us like Britain even if we are not proud of it all the time. A few nobheads rioting doesn't change that. I'll take it that you were posting in jest looking to get a reaction like mine! -

They highlight bad/selfish motoring. How on earth can anyone, apart from a few hard core motorists, take exception? Well done to them. Happy to forgive them if occasionally over zealous. If I had a helmet can would have loved to have captured the driver doing 70 last Sunday evening on Brenchley overtaking a dozen slow motorists. Fortunately I could seek refuge on the pavement. Funnily enough I don't look at X very often but thanks to the link to DR. -

I see no problem in alerting the masses to serious accidents. Almost 30,000 a year are killed or seriously injured each year on our roads, a number that has plateaued in recent years. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/reported-road-casualties-great-britain-annual-report-2022/reported-road-casualties-great-britain-annual-report-2022 I'm thankful that 20mph has been introduced throughout Southwark and neighbouring boroughs, -
West Dulwich LTN Action Group - needs your support

There appears to be confusion about what a consultation is. We are delivering a scheme. We want your views on how nest to implement this. An interesting comparison is that all proposed new nuclear power stations received more objections than support during statutory consultation in the last 40 years or more. All were successful in the planning application. As said consultations are not a referendum. -
Moped crash scams around Barry Road/Underhill/Goodrich

In this situation 999, the next time it happens do it at the scene. I am vulnerable and being threatened. He only crashes into female drivers, often with young children in the car -

Thames Water said we have a water leak
malumbu replied to vladi's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thames water advice is to take your own readings if you think you have a leak. With all the taps and other water feeds off, with stop cock on and stop cock off. Despite all the issues we with the company they were very good to me when I had a real leak in the old lead pipe into the house. Now all plastic -
I'm not really sure what you want. Is it banning e bike rental schemes? And ditto for e scooter rentals? I don't expect that is going to happen, as said before would it not be better getting the schemes to work better. A good start would be to write to Ellie explaining what you want and we we need it.
-
Twist and go e bikes are actually 'powered two wheelers' so need to be registered, riders have to have licenses and insurance and pay vehicle excise duty (ie like motorbikes and mopeds). Therefore unless this is done they are not road legal. A quick fix was sorted for hire electric scooters, and those not under a hire scheme are illegal both on the road and pavement. A whole different thread. Some stuff from Raleigh who don't sell non-road legal bikes is useful https://www.raleigh.co.uk/gb/en/electric-bike-knowledge/do-electric-bikes-have-throttles/ Lime bikes and other electrically assisted bikes are in regulator terms the same as pedal cycles.
-
I know of plenty of people who use them and like them. Are others living in a bubble? I have no need for them but understand that others do.
-
Fundamentally hire bikes a good thing so surely better spending time on making the concept work better rather than loathing them. By all means lobby government on the free for all of food delivery

Lordship Lane pavement on a rainy day is a disgrace
malumbu replied to rMattos's topic in Roads & Transport
I'm liking the idea of a car free day, maybe monthly, in LL. Buses would need to be diverted but could pick up and drop either at GG or further up LL. Could arrange for supervised bike, cargo bike and Lime bike parking -
ULEZ expansion ruled lawful by High Court
malumbu replied to megalaki84's topic in Roads & Transport
Daft speculation by many people, dependent on multiple factors, measurements supplemented by sophisticated modelling. Essentially cleaner vehicles equals less pollution. The academics will get some handle on how much ULEZ accelerated air quality improvements. And as for Bromley the 30 mph borough...... -

malumbu replied to Rashmipat's topic in Roads & Transport
Quick summary. Traffic reduction is good because it means: less pollution, less carbon emissions, space can be allocated for other purposes, more attractive environment, reduction in accidents/improvement in road safety, more walking and cycling (health benefits), more efficient use of our transport network and global resources (fossil fuels, raw materials, energy). Move to electric vehicles (EVs) will reduce emissions of nitrogen dioxides, the main cause of early deaths and poor health due to air quality. But as others have discussed they are not a solution, congested roads full of EVs are not what is needed. Non-tailpipe emissions from road vehicles is complex, particles of road and tyres may be relatively inert when we breath them in but still end up in our rivers seas and being ingested by animals including us. Heavier vehicles worsen this - driven in part by the manufactures willing us to supersize our vehicle fleet, and the extra weight of batteries in EVs. Most drivers don't drive smoothly, increasing road, brake and tyre wear. Of course if you don't believe that there is climate change, poor air quality, increased obesity and type 2 diabetes due to diet and lack of physical exercise, and you don't care about a nicer environment, or don't believe that reduction in road traffic will help address this, then a bit of a pointless debate Nice post yogiandbubu -
Is it just me or is the title of this thread weird? Not a good sign when the subject heading is not clear. Is this a decline in our use of the English language? A thread in it's own right. Reminds me of the Badwolf line running through the Dr Who's of Ecclestone and Tenant. Perhaps Rose in the parallel universe can understand what badfish is and save our world. https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Bad_Wolf_(entity)

If they have had their cycle training they will know to use the bell sparingly. Ideally come year 5 most of them will be trained and confident to cycle on the road. Just need to train the parents! I'm being serious 😀
