  1. ALD stands for adrenoleukodystrophy which is a life threatening genetic disorder, normally affecting males . Log on to www.aldlife.org.uk to find out more. It is an incredibly worthwhile charity and as I said before has a direct relevance to families living in East Dulwich so it would be an ideal charity for members of the forum to support. You may see collection boxes in some shops in East Dulwich and there is an ALD charity shop in Penge , opposite Sainsburys.
  2. A really good local charity is ALD Life - sorry can't provide link but local family run charity- have ALD shop in Penge but son afflicted with ALD lives in East Dulwich -ex Goodrich pupil---really really worthwhile charity to support. Good Luck with your carols. Sorry I can't join in. Have got badly sprained ankle after slipping on train platform last week....
  3. We lived in Brixton for 5 years and I never set foot in East Dulwich for all of that time (no tube !). Then we had a baby in 1994 and someone told me that you could go to a shop in a place called Lordship Lane that sold maternity bras. That was Hey Diddle Diddle (corner of Hansler and LL). We had a coffee in the Blue Mountain and the rest dear readers is history........
  4. Did anyone ever have their hair cut at Molly's on Northcross Road ?(opp Emily's fish Bar) I had just had my first baby (Molly) when the hairdressers closed down. The signage from the shop (swirly writing and a woman's head) is now rusting nicely at the bottom of our garden.
  5. Dear DM Private schools always have too early nativities because they finish school by about Dec 14th or something mad like that. If you don't pay then the schools (in Southwark anyway) keep the lovelies until Dec 21st and so everything is a week later! NB New parents- the more you pay the less time they are in school !!! ps We are getting our tree on Dec 15th weekend.
  6. I had a very pleasant hour at the fair and bought my partner a Christmas present which I know he will be pleased with. My daughter got some lemon curd from the W I and she was happy too. Monica- I know you have worked tirelessly to organise the fair so thumbs down to whingers with nothing constructive to say. (cf Observr today - another new survey saying don't hang out with whingers -they bring you down ........der) BUT I then blew it and congratulated Fear n Loathin on his recent marriage because I thought he was Keef !!!! MANY apologies Matt if your woman friend then thought you had a guilty secret...... Has anyone else accosted someone they think they know from the forum and just said something embarassing and just WRONG ???
  7. Yes of course you are both right. I just needed to tell a few friends.
  8. I'm going to bury this in the middle of this thread but I need to reveal...........disgraced Peter Watt is my cousin !!!(haven't seen him for 20 years but he was lovely when I went to stay with his mum and dad way back then. Leeds to Poole was a journey too far in the late 70's). I only realised when I saw him on the news last night. I know I'm biased but his family were LOVELY. They used to foster loads of kids, despite having 7 of their own. Funny how news takes a different slant when you have a family interest....I'm sure he isn't really an idiot or evil.how can he be ?? we share genes !!!! off my chest..now shoot me down.....
  9. It's a BBC drama- I thought it was Crimewatch but apparently not. Saw Timothy Spall driving down LL this afternoon in a learner driver car with a guitar sticking out of roof.
  10. There's nowt wrong with a regional accent luv. East Dulwich is all the richer for us folk from up t' north. (Just can't say carrrrstle or barrrrth but most folks is reet kindly and lets us off like)
  11. And the guys at Plant Nation always help me sort the saddle on my bike out ! Don't forget Paul by the Harvester. He stocks loads of plants and can source stuff if you ask him. He is really helpful and a nice bloke. We get loads of stuff for our school from him.
  12. Welcome to East Dulwich ! We have lived just off Northcross Road for over 10 years and very happy . All the roads around here are great location wise but pretty dreadful for parking outside your own door - basically you can't. But hey- you get used to it and it's lovely strolling to the shops in a matter of seconds . (My partner often goes to get the papers with a coat on over his pyjamas much to our daughters mortification- but we're also handy for the Maudsley as well so he just looks like he's on day release ) Happy hunting ! ps. Have never met David_Carnell but he has exquisite taste football-wise so he sounds jolly nice.
  13. Graham Parker and the Rumour, Leeds Uni. !979
  14. Tuesday 20 Nov The butcher in W Rose was very patient when I asked him to explain the difference between rump steak and stewing steak (I live with too many veggies). Had a nice chat with the Moxons man about tuna. Waved at Chris in Pretty Traditonal Bought some cards in Greetings . (Fellow Leeds fan- discussed the Hereford match ) Felt like I should be wearing a crinoline !! I love having Tuesdays off work so I can do my Duchess of East Dulwich act when everyone else is at work....
  15. And Leeds got knocked out of the Cup by Hereford on Tuesday night. What a week..... Still....Marching on together

  17. Not to mention bowel/testicular cancer
  18. A lot of the 8/9 yesar old boys at school are collecting the red bands and making big bouncy balls with them. Who needs a wii for Christmas when it's on the pavements for free ?
  19. Dec (or Ant ) "The phone lines are now closed. If you continue to phone you will be charged for the call...... "
  20. Agree about the amount of rudeness the staff at Budgens put up with. Try harder everyone ! I think the people at Dulwich D I Y are lovely and have always been incredibly helpful and friendly.(And they give out sweets at Christmas). I love their shop almost as much as A J Farmers.
  21. I can endorse that The Gardens is a very good Doctors' practice. There are 3 lovely women doctors and the handsome charismatic Dr Addo. *he's lovely*
  22. Hear hear. And East Dulwich is such a fab place to live that your kids will make great friends in which ever of the local schools they end up in.
  23. I bought a lovely purple shopping trolley in Barcelona a couple of years ago. My dears it holds vast amounts of shopping and looks fantastic ]*apparently you can buy the same trolley In lewisham market*
