"Going forward" "Across the piece" "Go for it" "Player" or "players" when used in a non-sporting or musical context - for example "Gerald Arbuthnot of Polentica is one of the key players in the low-fat strawberry biscuit market."

Given your feelings and the very descriptive thread title, why did you read it then? (Personally, I wouldn't read the soccer threads in the Lounge because I don't care what a load of spoilt privileged kids get up to...)
I'm not quite that bad, but I do have long (and different) wish lists at both Amazon UK and Amazon US. Since I'm (apparently) difficult to buy presents for, it helps family and friends but I do make a point of saying that they don't have to actually buy the items through Amazon. I also have long "wants lists" with eBay, GEMM, Musicstack and other smaller record dealers' websites.
Poor old misunderstood ?4... He actually isn't always full of negativity. The thought that ED might get yet another place for him to gamble his money away in seems to fill him with something close to happiness.
I'll never know. I can safely say that there is no one on earth with the same name as me. Last year, I had a very interesting bit of confusion with two women with the same name who worked for the same company in Australia...
You're right. The first part of the number was geographical (BRIxton, WHItehall, PADdington etc). When the system changed, they changed the letters into the corresponding numbers. When I first came to the UK, telephone books had a section in the front listing all the codes/areas so that you could see roughly where a caller lived. In the US, I think they only use the letters for commercial reasons and for a price you can choose your own number - "call 1-800-BUY-BEER" etc.
Thanks PGC - John McNab it was. I must re-read it. david_carnell: I haven't read a JB book for many years. The last one was the aforementioned John McNab and since it isn't a Hannay book and has little political/war intrigue, there's probably less "un-pc" content in it. The R4 broadcasts (in the Classic Serial slot) don't seem to be online anymore, but PM me... I've not read any of the Flashman books. John Buchan is about as far as I go in the Boy's Own/adventure genre.
david_carnell: John Buchan is somewhat underrated, IMO. Nothing too deep, but a good storyteller. Radio 4 did a two-part dramatisation of Mr Standfast in March, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Which is the Buchan book where he's filled with ennui and decides to go to Scotland to play some kind of stalking game? Mark - I read Ronan Bennett's The Catastrophist recently and found it very enjoyable.

I assume that the Estate is allowed to charge a toll on the road due to some ancient feudal bylaw. (Before it went to 50p, I'm sure the toll was only 20p.) ...and estate agents, traffic wardens, people who buy "overpriced" things, children in pubs, Southwark Council, the mentally ill, litter wardens, and MPs.
Maybe there could simply be a general "whinge" thread in the Lounge? Then anyone who wanted to complain about their parking tickets, fines for illegal driving/littering/fare dodging/keeping library books too long etc could find some relief there.

Crazy idea, but it might work...
