Joyless jjf, joyless What would you want for 27 million? Or what would you achieve for 5 million Fact is a lot of the world will visit here because of that. It's called investment. Private companies don't have a monopoly on it
-
Liverpool paid a lot more than 27 million and only got Andy Carroll

That's it. I'm applying for a British passport Fair play Danny Boyle. Brave appointment but well worth it But the bbc commentators. Sheesh

I couldn't make it last night, but the times I have tried VZ have been very dissapointing. The food is too sweet for one thing But agree about Draft House - great beers. And the meat bombs are lush -
ever since someone pointed out that the logo looks like Lisa Simpson giving a.... well you can see for yourself And now you can't unsee it

"I might feel differently if I felt I could access the thing, but it's just happening around me. " Is that not largely down to you tho'?

Ridgely, if what you say is true, hasn't he already... y'know... sodded off?

"Queues and mud or sunburn and other people's screaming kids and half of Dulwich there anyway, and filthy toilets etc, etc, etc, etc " erm, you sure you aren't just down Lordship Lane?

From what I've heard I too am looking forward to the opening ceremony (a first for me) But if it is a lame cheese-fest I'll just chalk it up to oddly-raised-expectations, and I shan't say it's a harbringer of disasters to come.

Olympics much bigger than football - not sure why you are bring that into the argument. Have a look over the coming weeks - doubt you'll see much base tribal loyalties I'm not judging anything about your friends - I just did some maths based on what you told us. You used it as a stick to beat the olympics with so I just tried to counter your argument
-
I lost count after the fourth strawman... " sport is a universal panacea for all known ills " " a god given right to our complete attention. " ", isnt all sport great" "they sink into base tribal loyalties." I'm not saying any of the first three - I can take or leave the sporting aspect of it tbh What base tribal loyalties are you referring to? "Go team GB"? Can't see much base about it, and doubt it will lead to any confrontation If your friends were lucky enough to get tickets what would they have done for food in that case? The food maybe overpriced but they had money for cheaper events and now they aren't spending it - that'll cover it surely? Your post is all a bit "price of everything value of nothing"

Oops. Just realised that it looks like I'm comparing some worthy causes with frivolous strippers and drugs. Im not really, just saying people more likely to lend you cash if something in it for them too
-
""that wasn't 24 billion knocking around waiting to be spent on other things. A lot of that only "exists" because of the olympics." You've really lost me there!!!!!! Are you suggesting that the olympic organisers are printing money (or plucking it from the money tree)?" If I wanted to spend half a million quid on, say, strippers and coke, I'd be hard pressed to find anyone to help me raise the cash. But if I decided to build a house for that amount, I'm fairly sure it would be less of an issue As for austerity... I don't know if the just-bombed population were as grumbly in 1948 but they were definitely more broke. Still, people alive back then tell me they had a great time. And they built an nhs to boot.
-
I don't think quids or I are criticising anyone who genuinely isn't interested as for sport - I guarantee you a large number of people who will enjoy the next few weeks are people who don't normally like sport - that's the beauty of the whole thing But if you don't like any of it fine - but it's the curmudgeouns who start endless threads on here and moan on LBC and the rest of it - you would swear that they had been asked to sleep in a tent in their own back garden whilst some yanks got to live it up in their house, eating all their food. If you don't like it, at least have a look about you and see how many people are enjoying it. As for the cost - I wouldn't mind seeing an audit at some point - but it's not really the point. Firstly has that 24 billion been verified by anyone or is it as pie in sky as the 2 billion? Let's say it's real and it costs 24 billion - that wasn't 24 billion knocking around waiting to be spent on other things. A lot of that only "exists" because of the olympics. And given the country is moribund generally, this is teh only show in town that is going to lift the economy for the forseeable future. Even if it is only a temporary blip IS getting to work going to be hard? Maybe altho I think it has been waay overstated. But like a seaside town in winter, dead on it's feet.. when summer comes and tourists arrive it's a fresh injection of blood and life. That's a good thing. People in moribund seaside towns complaining about tourists got on my tits when I lived in one, and the London equivelants are no more attractive

I literally can?t believe that something this big is happening on our doorsteps and so many people are indulging is the worst case of moaning I?ve ever witnessed And you just know that plenty of the miserabilists will at some point in the next week be overheard saying ?I didn?t think I?d like it at all but did you see.. x? ?. And I will kick them in the shins. Hard

oh dear god yes. This completely

"I got it a couple of years ago at a stall at Goose Green fair" many of us were introduced to Dragon's Blood the exact same way... some voluntarily but most not

Caveat: I think AC and EP already know this, but... I think young Moos is referring to City 17-style public space pronouncements from Boris, rather than people she doesn't like...

Lady D I thought in a previous post I made it clear it wasn't about parking restrictions but potentially a case of one person short of time versus another person short of time I'm not sure where bullying comes into it either -

"Stratfer jack, the difference is if A ticket lands on my doorstep in a week I will pay and admit that i was wrong. Where as whoever has done the damage has driven off. Leaving me to sort it out." I understand, I get it. But to play devils advocate here... It's clear you were in a hurry to get to an unfamiliar job. Out of curiosity, when you were rushing to that new branch, if you had brushed against another empty car parked somewhere in Forest Hill say, would you have had time to stop and provide details yourself? -
sorry unc - got my posters confused was meant to address OP's "How did this dumbing down infilitrate our society? Was it Blair?"

I have sympathy for anyone (including tom_tom) who has had their car damaged like this And I have sympathy for Lady D's argument about people nit picking On the other hand we have tom_tom admitting " didnt know the rules off parking, didnt bother to check as i was in a rush" which I think warrants some criticism. If you haven't got the time to check parking restrictions, who is to say the person who did your car in wasn't genuinely remorseful but was also in a rush? Fair play, called at possibly short notice to an unfamiliar branch, hop in the car and (undoubtedly safely within speed limit) arrive at new bank. But you would check with the locals when you got in there if it would be ok for the day wouldn't you? -
you reporting something new as fact there silverfox or just stuff we already new about searches and allowing time?
