  1. "That thread where the lyrics to a Pogues song were complained about spring to mind" oh gaaaawd, I forgot about that too!
  2. Ted might apologise, but if you dare correlate the centuries old oppression of an entire race by a long standing word, with the very occasional use of the word "ponce" to describe gay people, you and I are having a proper falling out Nigger is unambiguous. Ponce has many meanings and uses. And you should trust people a bit more and wag your finger a bit less. And that's coming from ME fer cryin out loud!
  3. But just to give it a go Sometimes your humorlessness knows no bounds. Like a VIZ stereotype Most people I know use ponce as defined by Urban Dictionary - ie "An individual who attempts to fake having intelligence, class, or culture." But forget that - someone who uses the language as precisely as TedMax, and you want to call him out on offensiveness? I genuinely give up
  4. end of? Well then, if we have been told there is no more discussion, why would I bother
  5. DJKQ - I BEG you.. please don't oops - too late
  6. Foie GRAS production banned, yet battery chickens not I know which I think is worse I've seen birds flock to their feeders in fois g farms. Can't see that happening with battery chickens It is, as ted says, a sliding scale. And I don't go for fois g myself. But as a target of inhumane husbandry it's relatively benign practice.
  7. Out of interst Otta, that seriouseats link, what bits of it do you find problematic? Or is it something else which they aren't saying?
  8. Tommy Tom Tom Before you go all gung-ho. YOU have decided Foie Gras is a horrible product. I have tried to counter that position. In short I don't agree with you in all cases. The product itself isn't inherently bad - the conditions behind it MIGHT be You aren't a consumer of the product so you aren't showing any company how you feel as a consumer. You are also spreading misinformation by claiming it's a horrible product as a fait accompli. I'm going to ask Franklins just exactly why they stopped selling it If Chardon do stop selling it what's next on your agenda? Just so we know. As consumers
  9. Otta - I was referring more to Ted's post
  10. More background , and a good read here I'm not sure even going by the mspca description a few posts above it can be compared to, say, battery chicken farms. equating filthy chicken with foie gras isn't really accurate. You could argue the consumers of filthy chicken have more in common with the ducks than the battery chickens do
  11. I'd echo the comments above - the gaps between buses can be excruciating (although not as bad as, say, 5 years ago) The time taken to get to Clapham from Peckham is more down to congestion around Brixton and Clapham itself tho - I can't imagine a more direct route
  12. Isn't Vanessa still on BBC London at this hour? Surely the appropriate forum for stock phrases like that As a taxpayer myself I'm happy to see the money spent on improving access to the station. So that's two taxpayers cancelling each other out
  13. sambless - not for he/she a double edged sword, just the Sword of Truth! It is a pretty curtain-twitchy thread tho', and not really ED specific. Every place I've lived (rural/urban) has tea towel sellers knocking on doors. I don't think most sentient beings need a warning about them
  14. Ian's comment on the tea towel thread "Looks as if it might be a pincer movement. I hope they pack up for the night soon. I'm running out of coloured pins to go on the wall chart."
  15. A different take on Foie Gras here from Tony Bourdain But whatever one?s views on the production methods, I find the thread itself curious. Tony is frequently starting threads about vegetarianism/veganism, so to pick on one aspect of animal treatment and to pick on one restaurant locally seems out of order and very selective
  16. This thread made me chuckle
  17. Big thread about this already in the business section
  18. http://www.picturesof.net/_images/Cartoon_Skinny_Man_Charming_a_Snake_Royalty_Free_Clipart_Picture_090402-195516-881042.jpg
  19. heck it's so good it has FOUR FLIPPIN THREADS going about it now... sheesh
  20. I think I see a way out of this confrontation http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2006/07/portal_pic1.jpg
  21. blimey missus - I didn't realise things were that binary Lot's of people on here keep linking and referencing the DM so I thought I'd fess up and say I don't get it. The venn diagram of humour shared with the people linking to it and me is pretty well shared, so I'm almost curious as to why the Mash leaves me cold (hence the thread)
  22. really MP? The bar for genius has dropped significantly in that case the teeniest of inner-smirks was all that managed. Compared to Bren's effort above it just seems a bit easy and weak. Almost like it was spewed out of an algorithm. "Name, title, juxtaposition, quote, minor royal, popular culture ref" What's the clever bit I'm not getting? Seriously, the daily Fiver email has more invention. And they loathe themselves
  23. I see that Marjorie has been fairly quiet this year....
  24. now that was funny
  25. BNG - it gets worse for me. I found the site I'd originally used here and clearly I had skimmed it and interpreted it incorrectly. So a good shout from you there That said, even correcting the chronology to before they were released, the paper's tone, attitude and language are well out of order
