  1. 20 minutes I've waited in the bishop for you foxy, that's it, I'm outta here!
  2. Who liked the Facebook page "supporting the London met police" in the last few days? Who wouldn't support that cause? But you might want to think twice before associating yourself with the views of the guy behind it http://bit.ly/r61IKj
  3. "but I refuse to be bullied upon a forum page!" - bullied is a bit of a strong accusation. Who is bullying you. I merely picked up on your statement that you weren't being cliched. I hardly think you were bullied?
  4. "There is nothing cliched about my original post. " Now, you SAY that MrPoole, but you took an opinion expressed by about half the populationon here and felt you could start a new thread saying much the same thing. Was that necessary? Or a smidge cliched
  5. Good shout Jaws ? I?d forgotten about the cash-bar (soon to be rocked) so a reminder to everyone to bring cash? Sounds like plenty of first-timers going along to this as well ? good stuff. No idea if I can make it meself.. it could just be me and quids in the Friday dad;s night-in club
  6. There are various schools of thought around appropriate punishment and causes for this weeks behaviour In simplistic terms, they cover the spectrum of political thought from right to left and all points shared and in between Whilst I may disagree with many of the opinions, I can see that the people I disagree with are, just like me, grasping towards some kind of sense and plan to avoid similar happening again But people who not only sign this petition but pass it around and make a rare post on here to say what a good idea it is? I?m filing straight in the green-ink bin
  7. "Depends on the mission briefing and required outcome." the mission briefing when the army went in to NI was to protect the catholic community from being attacked. Mission fail
  8. re: Santerme's point. Any country with a sizeable army can deploy it's troops in another and when predictable trouble starts, claim success when they horse into the natives. That doesn't make it a "success"
  9. and I've seen them accorded nothing but respect James but "Im sorry but the police can do no right in the eyes of the public" is just made up nonsense they problem I have is that when excessive forces wasn't required in the past they have piled in. When it was required they didn't. That's not down to the brave frontline officers but it is bad management. I'm not as cynical as some with the suggestion police management saw this as no bad excuse to have people tremble in fear a little bit, therby avoiding the 20% cuts - I've heard that but don't agree with it. But nor do I believe they couldn't act for fear of media/public backlash
  10. I don't think the difference between rioting and looting matters tbh as a tactic to control, it did nothing to foster relations in Ireland , plus: "In a study of 90 patients in Northern Ireland, one died, 17 suffered permanent disabilities or deformities and 41 required hospital treatment after being fired upon with rubber bullets.[7]" I think it might have had a positive effect on Monday, but much worse effects down the line. I understand some people will read those numbers and say that's acceptable risk tho'. I'm just not one of them
  11. I don't recall rubber bullets being all that succesful in Ireland
  12. "Lets all do what the Liberals want- lets throw money at the situation because it makes us all feel better. " What you mean is "let's all put words in liberals mouths and misrepresent them"
  13. Yep - repercussions should be meaningful and strong - that I agree with I'm siding with the long community sentence thing, as well as the restoration of any groups which have recentlly had their funding cut to deal with people like this. primarily because it's more sucessful AND cheaper than employing more police and just hoping it doesn't happen again
  14. If some sections of the media were to do that, I would say there is a time and a place to stand up to that kind of stuff. And these riots are as good an example as any The problem is the police have made a rod for their own back by pulling some of the stuff they have in the past, and then compounding those mistakes by lying and being evasive. But at a basic level they have a job to do. And this week was that job. Everything else is posturing If any paper decided to play that ?heavy handed? card I?m sure their readers would be quick to pull them up on it
  15. What has one thing got to do with the other? We are trying to prevent a repeat not ensure it happens again
  16. yay - several posts outlining the problem with the OP's petition and they come back with "Who gives a sh1t. " wise.... (emotionally it's most of our gut reaction, I admit that. But you don't have to think for much longer to start to see the flaws) But it seems even 2 seconds more thought is beyond you
  17. Magpie, I've just written a long post 4 inches above yours to refute that very suggestion
  18. "Most of them looked very young, and I don't believe in writing individuals off." And right there that's the problem - given whatever circumstances have got them to where they are (family? drugs? peers? whatever) are unlikely to change, it takes money and time to turn that around (youth centres, programmes etc) - all in the face of hostility ("you love those punks more than you love law-abiding citizens" etc) from the choir I'm not making excuses for anyone - a plague on every participant in the riots - but riots like this weeks don't happen all the time for a bunch of reasons. And one of those reasons is that a small band of commited people recognise that many kids are broken 9for whatever reason) and try and grub around for funding to keep them busy. If it stops rioting, it's cheap at twice the price, even if it appears to be "soft"
  19. I've seen a lot of opinion around the police and their apparent restraint on Monday night operationally I doff my cap to the men and women putting themselves out there. But I have heard a few senior officers and waaaay too many posts on public forums saying the police weren?t ?allowed? to tackle the thugs or that liberals complaining about excessive force in the past were to blame for their reluctance to steam in I can?t speak for every liberal but I suspect I?m not too far away when I say that, confronted with what they were on Monday night, nobody would object to the police taking the right course of action. If ever there was a case of a need for a show of force this was it. ?Liberals? complain about excessive force when innocent people die walking down the street where no threat was apparent, but this was something completely different I think it?s pretty disgusting for some people to imply ?well, we COULD sort this out, but hands are tied see? when nothing of the sort is true
  20. Green Goose's post in the main section? yep... thirded
  21. Falling Down DVD - pressed when DVD was new and exciting but lot's of films (especially Warner Brothers films) were basically copied from a VHS cassete taped off the TV I exaggerate, but not by much.
  22. we'd never hear from them again - perfect!
  23. Jezza, jezza first of all, portal 2 involves rather more intelligence than the average looter posseses - more likely to be some grim. grey military shooter Secondly portal 2 only lasts about 6-8 hours so if you're correct about their choices, watch those streets again
  24. Mrs f there, merely rebutting some incorrect rumors. Only for a barely literate being castigate her for not taking things seriously. These riots will pass but idiots will always be with us
