Best time to do NCT classes?
philiphenslowe replied to philiphenslowe's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thank you so much for your quick and helpful replies. I just needed a bit of reassurance. I'm going to book on to the local one at 35 weeks. xx -
I've been offered a place on a local NCT course, but I'll be 35 weeks pregnant when the classes begin. It's 3 intensive sessions + I'll be 37 weeks when the course finishes. Is 35 weeks quite late to start the classes? This is my first pregnancy so I'm not really sure. Also, I could go to a different class the month before, which my husband could also attend, but it's in a different area to where I live. What I'm asking really is it better to go to a very local class which my husband can't attend + wouldn't start until I was 35 weeks or one further away from home which my husband could attend + started at 31 weeks? How important is it to go to a class really close to your home? I'd be really grateful to hear other people's experiences of NCT classes. And does anybody have any opinions on intensive courses vs 2hr evening classes over a longer period? Many thanks

I have to walk past them when I visit my dad + I absolutely dread it. -
St Thomas More Hall closing
philiphenslowe replied to IrishDancer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The hall has been run and managed for many years by a group of dedicated and hardworking volunteers. Unfortunately the new priest has refused to even have a meeting with them to discuss its future use. It's meant to be a mixed-use church hall for the parish and community + I can't see how cancelling everything + letting it out to the highest bidder fulfils that remit. -

Oooh me too - I live directly opposite Forest Hill station so getting to Stratford is a doddle -
EdFest 2001 who remembers?
philiphenslowe replied to Angusvanfrehley's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I remember this. My favourite EDT Comedy event though was One Word Improv with Eddie Izzard, Stephen Frost, Suki Webster & Neil Mullarkey upstairs at the EDT in 1996 or 1997 - great show + it only cost a fiver. -
St Anthony's Primary School extension
philiphenslowe replied to Jamma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
When I was at St Anthony's in the 1980s my classmates came from Barry Road, Lordship Lane, Landells Road, Crystal Palace Road, Crawthew Grove, Melbourne Grove, Goodrich Road, Underhill Road, Friern Road, Cyrena Road, Darrell Road + Ulverscroft Road, as well as Henslowe Road. 2 girls came from Ondine Road & Danby Street in Peckham + one girl lived at the very top of Lordship Lane near the barracks. A very small percentage of children used to come from the Peckham end of East Dulwich, but the school used to organise a coach from a local company to collect kids from Goose Green (I think) + drop them at the top of Friern Road, by the entrance to the playground. I knew quite a few people with younger siblings who had to go to Goodrich & Heber because St Anthony's was just too small + couldn't accommodate them. At the time it was a 1.5 form entry school. I have now moved to Forest Hill and when I have children I'd love them to go to St Anthony's, but my local school is St Francesca Cabrini so I wouldn't have a chance of getting them in despite regularly attending St Thomas More + getting married there. -
I'm looking for some advice about where to go for a few days of relaxation + B&B/hotel suggestions. I will be travelling on my own + I'm finding it difficult to not pay over the odds for single accommodation. I just want to go somewhere warm (not hot) to relax + read books. My husband doesn't get much time off work and we're having a 'big' holiday to Africa in August. So, I'm looking for peace + quiet, somewhere cheap + cheerful in Europe and a B&B with a balcony, nice views just for 4-5 days any time from now - early June. I'm completely open to suggestions. Can you help? Thanks

Although East Dulwich is not a predominantly Irish area there has always been a very strong Irish community here. Southwark Irish Cultural Arts & Development Centre is run by a team of dedicated volunteers who seek to promote participation in Irish arts, culture and sport - http://www.southwarkirish.com/about_us.html SICAD?s website states, ?Irish Festival part funded by Southwark Council & Emigrants Support Programme in conjunction with the Irish Government? http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=292 Dulwich is also home to the Dulwich Harps Gaelic Football team ? one of the oldest in London - http://www.dulwich-harps.com/index.php You may have seen Niall McCann from the team on BBC Breakfast recently discussing handball and the 2012 Olympics. Incidentally the goalposts on the Rye belong to the team. The Southwark Irish Festival is not about ?sweating gingery Irish folk (and assorted wannabes) clad in bright green man-made fibres and drinking warm Guinness whilst listening to "tiddly-tee" music?. The Saturday was a celebration of Gaelic Games (football, hurling & camogie) and the Sunday always started with an open-air mass led by the Bishop of Southwark followed by dancing and music.

The service lasted nearly 2.5 hours and was nearly all in Hebrew but I really enjoyed it. It was thoroughly welcoming + interesting.

Lordship Lane street party for Royal Wedding?
philiphenslowe replied to silverfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don't think it would work on Lordship Lane at all. Not all of us will be getting a day off work + where would the buses be diverted to? I remember an excellent street party on Darrell Road for Charles & Diana's wedding -

SE22 to Brighton by rail - best way?
philiphenslowe replied to Nero's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Trains from Forest Hill to East Croydon are at 19 + 49 past the hour, then train from E Croydon to Brighton. If steps are an issue there is a lift at Forest Hill station now. -

I got mugged in my parents' front garden in East Dulwich at 10.30pm a few years ago. It really can happen anywhere, not just down dark alleyways or deserted areas

Thank you - I'll speak to them x

Yes, I know it's white gold - I chose it myself.

Can anybody recommend a jeweller to reset a diamond in a platinum ring? Any specific jewellers in Hatton Garden etc? Would be good to get a personal recommendation. When I got my engagement ring 18 months ago I stupidly chose 18ct white gold, not realising it is just yellow gold with a white gold coating and needs to be re-coated every year. I think it would be cheaper in the long term to have it reset now rather than pay out each year. Thank you

What's it really like to live in Dulwich?

"not too many of the 'original' locals is what I hear" What makes you think that? Most people in my road have been here well over 30 years. -
dawsons heights built on roman burial ground

I love the building. In my 31 years in East Dulwich I only managed to go up there for the first time on new year's day + the views were fantastic. I always like to see it twinkling in the distance on a dark evening from the top deck of the bus when it gets to the top of Dog Kennel Hill. -

Sounds like the story's been given legs though
