  2. Talking of Orwellian, I posted a comment after Sean and lozzyloz, and it's not there. Hmmm. Nero
  3. Dulwich Library, for its new opening hours and new books Peckham Rye and Dulwich Parks Jacks for its good food and service, despite its lack of apostrophe The barber's shop on Forest Hill Road for great cuts at great prices
  4. Plesae could someone post a map with the boundaries as are, say in red, and as they could be, say in green? Nero

    Screaming kids

Mighty Roar, My English is very good, but I'm not that fluent in dot-dot-dot, so don't know what you mean. But I stick my my post. Many British kids are indulged by indulgent parents. There is a cult of the child amongst the middle class. I concede that what I said was a bit sweeping. I should have put 'some' or 'many' rather than just 'parents'. Whether or not it was better or worse before, kids are still indulged much, much more than before, in my experience and parents deify them in a way that didn't use to happen. (This is nothing to do with loving and nurturing. It's more to do with trying to live up to a certain 'lifestyle'.) Nero
  6. I joined the gym earlier this week and had my stats checked today. It was very thorough and the physio who 'did' me certainly knew what he was doing. It smacks of professionalism and can-do and I can't wait to get my programme written up on Monday so I can start exercising. Nero
  7. People who say 'sorry' when barging past you, thinking that by saying it they have carte blanche to do what they like. Nero
  8. Not really. They know how hated they are already, so to do something to further pee people off is wrong on many levels. Nero
  9. Not really into pubs, but of all of them I prefer the Palmerston and the Dog in the Village. Both are relaxed, roomy and have a good clientele. The Drum is good, too, because it feels like it's a place that only a few of you know about. Nero
  10. Bob, I agree with you about doing the crime and paying the fine, but the thread was originally about layabout ones breaking the law themselves by resting on a double yellow. That is illegal and arrogant and not to be condoned. Nero

    Screaming kids

British parents are very indulgent of their children, whatever class they belong to. That's why we have obese, inactive, socially inept kids who prefer to watch DVDs in their bedrooms or chat for ages on their mobiles. Playing out is unheard of around these parts (though I am heartened to see a few lads having a kick about around Goodrich and Friern roads when the weather is good). Also, there's been a real change on the part of parents when it comes to where they think it's OK to bring their children and how they let them 'express themselves' when in that location. Parents simply don't think about non-parents. It doesn't even enter their heads that other adults might want to have a child-free place. They treat it now as a right, in the same way as they don't question the availability of oxygen. Nero
  12. DM, does this mean you actually take those red things on wheels? Or have you just heard such complaints when you wind your window down when you pass Iceland? Nero
  13. Yup. Film it, put it on YouTube, alert local press...The Daily Mail will follow it up within a few days. Simple. Nero
  14. Stupid people who refuse to go upstairs on double-deckers and instead cram up the bottom deck, and stupider bus drivers who don't take control and ask them to move upstairs. Nero
  15. Perhaps we could get them to rename it East Dulwich Airport (give that London Heathrow and Gatwick are miles from the place they serve). Nero
  16. Mr Ben's tale sounds like an advert, and it's making me think seriously about using the City Airport for the first time. I'd really like to be able to hop on a train straight from ED and do the whole continental integrated transport system thing, but it's not going to happen like that. Nero
  17. Just a thougth, but are there cycle racks there? And any interesting destinations to fly to from there? I have the idea it is a bit Isle of Man/Dusseldorf/Lerwick. Nero
  18. I understand Frisco's thoroughness in the same way I don't understand why people want to mock it. I also agree with the language difficulties that the waitresses seem to have. When I said I wanted a new round of mushy peas as they were too runny, she just said 'yes'. I am sure she didn't have the linguistic resources to say something colloquial like 'oh, sorry sir, I'll just get you a fresh lot. Shouldn't be too long'. Not a huge point, but it does make me wonder why the managers don't take this thing into consideration when hiring people. I'm going to give it another go next week. Nero
  19. Sue, While I like to see the good in everything, your attitude is wrong. It's like saying 'Oh, I'm so pleased the axe man only cut off my left arm and not my right. Good for him!'. Don't accept second best from a service we pay for! Nero

They're silent now. And when I see them, they are always sweet as pie and totally charming. Maybe it's the decor? Nero
  21. Michael Winner's 'Calm down, dear, it's only a commercial' is good because the phrase has worked its way into our national psyche. And it was really cheap. Nero
  22. No! If a pak gets through, it'll spoil the paper and that will just compound the waste. Bin it or send it off to the Tetra Pak recycling place. And, for ?2, you can get a wooden orange squeezer from Roullier White, and I reckon that shop whose name I forget near to the Coop will sell one of those old-fashioned juicers that collect the pips. January Detox

Agree that detox is rubbish. Losing weight by not drinking is a good idea, but unless you are injecting vodka, the body will do you justice when it comes to toxins. I've gone without booze for three months before, and really it didn't bother me after a while, but it was tough for the first three weeks. Drinking is a habit for most of us, a pleasurable one, and that is why it is hard to do without. Same for chocolate, cakes, etc. I think complete abstinence of all treats and drinks is really hard, so don't make it hard on yourself, or you'll just end up feeling down on yourself. Nero

    Screaming kids

THey don't scream all the time, just often. See my above post as per aspersions. They even scream when the grandparents and or nanny or just one of the parents is in. Nero

    Screaming kids

Agree, mighty. I was more or less fishing about whether this was a typical sort of behaviour for kids, and was not in any way casting aspersions on the children's parents. I was more curious about child development than anything else! Nero
