  1. Ed has made the political calculation that the left hates the tories enough that they will ignore this - it's an attempt to make it sound that Labour are serious about welfare reform (see also Immigration/Defeceit reduction). If you believe the polls, the Conservatives are seen as more competent on this and Defecit reduction, so he has to make some noises to attract those that are worried about Labour on these areas (many) Dave, meanwhile used to be ok being a hug a hoody as he could more or less rely obn the vote of the right wing tories, UKIP has changed that ...but I really think the Tories will be pushing "Vote Farage get Ed". I think David Cameron will be PM in a year's time one way or the other. I bet on this 2 years ago.

  5. Watched Breaking Bad twice (vers easily) still the best thing I've seen on TV, including the obvious competitors.
  6. er, no mention of Tony Blair after today?.....and at least the others mentioned on here are harmless rather than war criminals. Still, he's Labour isn't he so moral high ground by default for all the Labour voters after the invasion of Iraq. Which is really gobsmakingly hypocritical when you read so much "how people can vote 'Con-dem" is beyond me" shite on social media and the other suspects.....
  7. AM, my point about Switzerland is that's about our level not our style of play or results we feel we are in the 2nd tier. Rooney by and large doesn't play where he wants for united and as Scholes has honestly but undiplomatically pointed out he's past his best. Agree with Mick, for once Shearer showed a bit of passion, I think he too was depressed at where our level is now. Obvioulsy we need to play to try and beat Urugay in the next game but if we fail I hope he plays the young 11 in the Costa Rica without a Lampard, Gerrard or Rooney starting. PS Johnson was an embarrassment. Also Ironic that the only old guard player we did miss was Cashley
  8. Maybe I saw a different game to most and the papers. But I saw a game in which one team were far better than the other; If England had scored again, Italy would have got another, I think they beat us in their stride without too much exertion. I agree it was a far more positive approach and an entertaining game but we looked like a say, Switzerland, in terms of the gap between us and Italy. Happy to eat my words but I think we'll not make it out of the group and not get a win. That we have no world class players is abundantly clear but Barkley and Striling have potential to get there. Just an embarrassment in terms of our standing rather than the actual performance. Rooney drop him and Gerrard not that great either. I can't wait for the golden generation to pass!

  11. A white horse walks into a pub and says to the Barmen "I'll have a whiskey please". The barman looks at the horse and says, "You won't believe this but we've got a whiskey named after you" The white horse says, "What? Dobbin?".
  12. I thought this was going to be "a fella wandered into a pub" type joke :(
  13. why do the 'bleedin hearts' claim sole credit for the erosion of prejudice sooo much....probably their own prejudice about the white working class say? I can tell you where racial mixing, relationships, marriage, friendships were first forged in any meanuingful numbers in the UK and it wasn't in Hampstead/Bath/Hove/Cannonbury, the right end of Notting Hill..nope. Mixed race kids aren't predominant in the ABC1 socio-economic groups for example. Actually, young people and indeed people as a whole are anectdotally (and data wise too- if you believe surveys) immensley less prejudiced than before..about race/sexuality etc. I really don't see much evidence that this is changing and suggest that liberal paranoia about UKIP is driving your concern - they are an outlet for some people with unplaeasant views for sure but the main reasons for their popularity are much more about political disengagement (which some of is the fault of the political establishment/media and the EU) not as some 'respectable' NF/BNP outlet. I suspect that the UK will be more tolerant in another 5 years than it is now and this will continue. You (like hugenot used too) seem to really roll up mistrust of the EU with prejudice by default?? Distrust of the EU is also completley understandable, growing accross europe, and not a pointer to little englander hatred of the foreigner cliches that liberals seem to heap on anyone who questions how effective it is. I still think we should be in on balance ( if it get's reformed) but i'm not that far off being indifferent. still wouldn't vote UKIP though for sound economic reasons!

    Hipsters

Talking of musical snobbery or something similar, The Eagles, on paper, I hate them, everything I hate about rock music encapsulated in that band... Watched the Eagles documentary on BBC4 last night(very good btw), spent the whole night going actually that track's ok, mmm, forgotten that one it's not bad, etc etc........a band whose sum of their parts is less than their parts maybe! The two main creative blokes (i dunno any names of any of them, sorry) - Fooking egos the size of southern California Still not going to buy any of their stuff
  25. I think someone is confusing light hearted anecdotes with tedious, unpleasant, much repeated, stereotyping.
