    Italia!

The point is that the Vote was a defacto vote of confidence in the Italian PM rather than his constitutional reform, as he said he's resign if he lost; he did, he has - there may now be an election (but not necessarily), in which case the two big eurosceptic parties (the comedian's one and the Northern League) are ahead in the polls and potentially could offer a referendum on certainly The Euro, more (likely) and maybe the EU. However getting a majority in Italy is not easy...

I have my grandama's diary from the Doodlebug time - you can see (read) she's nearly on the edge of a nervous breakdown, including when one came down and my mum was out playing (My mum stpped talking for a while during this time too). In the end they had to go to relatives in Liverpool - so having stayed put through the original Blitz she had to get away when the Doodlebugs started. I guess it was partly because they though the bombing had more or less ended by 1944 before the rockets (V1/V2) made it come back again

I was just waiting it had to come.....erm, political angle here by any chance? ILEA run schools were always beacons of fantastic pupil discipline of course before evil academies blah blah blah

  10. I agree with most of that jaywalker - the two reasons I voted remain were the uncertainty and, on a vague bit of idealism (that just about remained in my soul) in the ideal that the people of Europe (including us) could hopefully work out the problems, of which there are many, of the EU collectively. Where I differ a bit is the economic signals are above most expectations thus far (including mine) and consensus has thus far been overpessimistic - now, I'm not saying things wont get worse in the near future, because I think they will but it's not looking as catasrophic as our worst fears. The other thing is we are not in a vacuum, "events dear boy events" - the US election has changed things and there are plenty of 'events' on the horizon in Europe.

I'm still dead to football after the weekend and it will take a while - see you in a week or so (maybe)
  13. I'm pretty appalled at Trump getting elected I'm a bit more ambivalent about Brexit but voted remain. The sanctimonious, emotive, 'grief' and general anti-democratic gnashing of teeth on right on social media (oh, and the Guardian obviously) has given me some small pleasure in both of these outcomes - silver linings eh

What is happening in the UK is appalling.....truth? Is Donald Trump a fascist? - all pretty right on, easy opinions to hold to demonstrate how 'good' you are...... I saw this as it was shared by a zillion of my 'right on' friends but actually, what is he contributing to anything other than how worthy his opinions are? Bugger all other than that....other than a dislike of democracy I guess

    C'mon ANDY

despite some ribbing I've always had a soft spot for the old miserabalist - although i still don't see how he squared the 'carrying the GB flag at the Olympics with voting/supporting Independence in the other referendum' circle

  19. The vibe on the strip from Jonnies up to Franklins (the bit opposite the cinema) - always crowded, especially in the summer, kids with ice creams, fair bit of al fresco drinking and eating (even this time of year with blankets) bit of street food. Love that little stretch now.

  24. No all true. But what you can say - with fact - is that, even since the referendum, the economic data in many areas is significantly above the forecasta from the dismal science - and that includes the adjustments they made post referendum, being well aware that 'article 50' hadn't been triggered. We are, so far, doing significantly better than the experts consensus on how we would....

Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > This week: > UBS - keeping head office in London 'no plans on > moving' > Google - confirm new European HQ in Kings Cross > > Yesterday - inflation below expectation > > Today - retail sales at their highest growth in 14 > years, way above expectation I'm just reporting fact on that UK performance post the referendum which is currently way, way above what the pessimists were predicting widely (and on here)i didn't even add an opinion! The deficit isn't on my list (and that hole from the FT is based on forecast incidentally, which may well turn out to be true, but is still nevertheless forecast so wouldn't go om my list ) - if you followed my stuff on here on the deficit you will see that I've long believed we are fooked on that anyway (and would have been without Brexit). My point - as someone who once again I stress voted remain - is that things aren't nearly as bad as most predicted YET. The inflation figure WAS below expectation and consensus Jaywalker - so predictions once again were wrong (see also employment/growth/retail sales...I could go on) Your and Lordship's posts feel like they reflect your personal and political views and opinions, and on Brexit and your pessimism has thus far have been proved over pessimistic! I'm not Nigel Farage for pointing this out! I have an opinion that things won't be as bad as the most pessimistic say and so far the figures support that - that's not a Dr Pangloss - although you are winning my vote for title of Eeyore of the EDF if we are going to take on great characters of literature :)
