Attack in Surrey Canal, Peckham (Lounged)
SeanMacGabhann replied to shoshntosh's topic in The Lounge
Judging by how much you hate the place Louisa it's doubtful you would see any coppers there as yuo are never there But I do know where you are coming from and I understand your angle. You have personally witnessed an area change it's DNA practically. And it is an area with massive crime problems. I'm not trying to deny that or your right to complain about it. But I am trying to say that beyond that there IS a vibrancy that you don't get elsewhere. Many people on here have testified to walking around the area at night for many years and people get attacked in all sorts of neighborhoods. The cycle paths where attacks have been documented many times exist over a wide area. I don't have the solution to those problems but given all that, I frequent Peckham a fair bit. probably 2 or 3 times a week I'm on Rye Lane doing a bit of food shopping or bar-hopping. or cinema going. I have met good people down there. If the area is to regenerate and "change" as you decribe it will need people with money to stay there, or move there. Several factors discourage that and one of them is people (be it you, the media or whoever) OVERSTATING the case against it. I'm not saying what you are saying is incorrect. And plenty of people feel as you do. But it is a somewhat slanted view. I just moved house recently and was days away from living just off Rye Lane. Problems with existing property in SE22 meant we had to hold off and in the meantime that house went - but otherwise I would be living slap bang in what you are so negative about. it would be my home. And I would take even less kindly to soemone badmouthing it whilst I was trying to do my bit -
don't worry about our souls young man, buy the copy YOU use!

of the ones I know on your list BBW ???? Dulwichmum Keef Michael Palaelogus Mockney Piers I laughed at all of them - uncanny accuracy - apart from Keef - he's too cool to be an embarrasing dad. So far Not sure about me and Dickie tho...

I had this at the Plough the other day. It was daytime and I know they have some sort of baby club but with the changing facility just around the corner is it necessary??? found this discussion from a few years ago mostly making the same points

Attack in Surrey Canal, Peckham (Lounged)
SeanMacGabhann replied to shoshntosh's topic in The Lounge
well in this instance a) I happen to know the guy attacked on this thread b) I also know someone close to dulwichmum c) I like Peckham and normally defend it against people (looking at you Louisa!) who because of some very-visible problems dismiss the whole place as vile, when there are many, many reasons to like Peckham so of course I'm conciliatory on this one. But "always"??? a leeeeeeeetle bit of a stretch no? -
the man has no scruples. or morals but he does have taste

I dunno - the world is facing such a major problem, co-operation may be the only way out of this. Bankers have had massive regulation heaped upon them in the past and they may have to swallow it again. The mindset that says "do as we say or we will follow the money elsewhere" is a busted flush
-
wellll #1 - why would you have to do that? As the rewards in parts of this industry are so far out of what with most people you could half them and still be more attractive to the "talent" we are so keen to keep #2 - much of the talk from global leaders is about tackling the root problems internationally - surely this could be incorporated into such controls?

Attack in Surrey Canal, Peckham (Lounged)
SeanMacGabhann replied to shoshntosh's topic in The Lounge
jon Well there is a question! I think so but I know others that don't. I think an exaggerated version of the stereotypical Dulwich Village-living, high-earning-partner-marrying, lady of lunch who has no concept of reality beyond her provileged borders is ripe for humour and I think she hits the target as often as not But if casual readers of the forum don't know that, then it just appears crass and offensive which I think is a shame -

jonsuissy by missing something do you mean dulwichmum's post is so horrifically offensive that it must be some sort of joke? Have a look at the link at the end of her posts and it should become clear -
and it's still not out! (16th Feb)

New Zebra Crossing on Lordship Lane.
SeanMacGabhann replied to karter's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
well we mustn't irritate the drivers must we.... so long as it's jsut the pedestrians irritated Sorry fractionater but are you really saying if you are slowed down you are more likely to injure or even kill someone because you are "annoyed" and no longer able to concentrate on the road -
And I sort of agree with you (and others) too Jeremy. But one of the reasons banks think they can get away with it is tehy have been living in dreamland (I'm paraphrasing here - you know what I mean) for years and money was never an issue for them. It is now.. Ditto the RBS point - I want it back on it's feet. But on a level playing field with bonuses ceilinged, why would it be a necessary step?

I agree with everyone who has said so far that it isn't on to tar everyone working in the city with the same brush. Most workers there are just average schmoes doing (probably) long hours in admin type jobs with no proximity to any of the decision making that went on in recent decades. Do they deserve a bonus? I say they.. I mean we, as I work in the city too. Although when Gerrard says modest salary, who is that in comparison with? What are we saying is a modest salary? Compared to most people living in Britain I would say even junior staff earn relatively decent money However, I don't see what is so special about city workers (compared to other occupations) that says we should expect one. There is no point saying it's now a cultural thing - if we have learned any lessons from all of this then surely it's challenging cultural assumptions? It's nice, and like keef says, if you are offered it you are going to take it. But I am not manning any barricades to say I have a right to one. Bonus to me means just that - if it's been a good year and there is money sloshing around I'll have some. But there is no point a farmer at the end of a back-breaking year saying he deserves more when all of his crops have turned to dust, just because he worked hard. If the result of a years hard work = bad results then why should bonuses be paid. Staff will leave? And go where? Even without a bonus this year, city people are doing fairly ok (if we hang on to our jobs). And where is this bonus money coming from? If the banks made a profit and haven't taken government funny they can do what they like. But to hear people on 30/40/50k an d upwards bleat about bonuses when some old shopkeeper in Bow is paying for it with his tax money.. it's not right is it?

having recently moved ourselves keef, all I can say is you aren't alone. And from looking around at various places it's not unusual either. The alternative I guess is to luck out with personal contacts or informal places on the property section We went with an estate agents, but with eyes open and plenty of lube In a couple of months you will hav forgotten most of this pain and wondered why you waited so long - hang on in there

New betting shop at former Woolwich

no worries - I thought I was responding in similarly light-hearted fashion about the BF signage less happy with the Gloucester reference I think.... ;-) -

SeanMacGabhann replied to Clyde's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
honk - I haven't called a betting shop a problem - not in the last year anyway. I think the post I made on the previous page (20th Jan 2008) says all I need to say on that subject I was merely pointing out that your statement re: the public wants was simplistic to the point of being facile -

I like code - as in computer coding/scripts. I wouldn't want it to be a main occupation but I like the logic and the challenge of it all As for xbox360, I reckon I have got more value out of mine than any other gaming system since my Amiga 20 years ago. And that's saying something
