  1. there is a lesson here for all of us somewhere isn't there? We don't need much to make us happy - a few smiles instead of negativity.. it can be that simple
  2. if only he had one of his bad games/on the bench situations instead of scoring that cracker against Arsenal... bah
  3. Good point Barny The bars/cafes that were open on the lane were making hay while the snow fell... if Sema Thai can pack em in on a Monday afternoon, you KNOW business is brisk. Yes somehow I doubt the "business experts" calculating the billions lost today will factor in that
  4. If tomorrow = today I'm going in to work. Today was great and a real treat but I need to crack on. I'll be wearing my boots and trekking in to Blackfriars Looking at the forecast in TV at the mo, I would guess the snow bit will be largely over tomorrow, but ice and flooding problems will have a knock-on impact on travel. I suspect about half the numbers on a snow day today will do similar tomorrow. Either decision seems ok to me..
  5. no doubt there are people who absolutely need to drive today, but judging from what I've seen on the roads today, the people driving are just clueless tossers and/or very fortunate to be alive Saw a car crash into the railing at Dulwich Park, and even then, in view of same, people were overtaking anyone driving carefully My inner-vigilante rose up I must confess. But compared to what I've seen, whether the congestion charge is in force or not seems moot. Discouraging car use is probably saving more lives today than usual
  6. They are pretty good with kids from what I can tell - but it can get loud. Best of luck to everyone!
  7. brum Several of these people will be there. One or two may even have a brummie accent
  8. ratty - how will anyone know if it's you if you bring a screaming child to the Bishop? Place will be full of the like
  9. if I was going out for a couple of hours this afternoon I would leave my heating on - not because of worry about the pipes.. but because I wouldn't want to come home to a freezing house. Is that "waste"? I don't think so...
  10. I have been on buses in London during heavy snow in the 80s and 90s - what happens then. Gridlock.. no buses move - ergo people have to walk anyway Louisa - the answer is provided by several people already - for the amount of times this happens it isn't WORTH inesting in the sort of equipment and people to deal with this problem. As for expertes saying this is costing London "billions" of pounds they are a) plucking figures out of the air b) the same people who, when faced with tighter regulations a year or so back, said London would lose "billions" as business would not deal with tighter regulations If people are laughing at us let them. They have there own problems. Neither city nor country you mention is without it's own problems.. really... this does not matter a jot in the bigger scheme of things
  11. come down off the ceiling Louisa. It's precisely because weather like this is so rare in London compared to other countries that we grind to a halt. Those countries have their own problems which interrupt their lives as well If the buses were in operation today the already dodgy roads would be exacerbated. Gritting, as discussed elsewhere, only works if there is enough traffic on the road for it to "bite". It only takes a couple of buses to slip on a hill for whole roads to be jammed (plus TFL uinnundated from passengers looking for a pound of flesh) Today is a chance to look at the world in a different way - take that chance and enjoy it.
  12. what bus would that be gg? There ain't none today
  13. Listening to the radio with lots of people ringing in complaining about "if they can do this in Canada and Poland why can't we?" etc etc. And even tho people ring in with perfectly reasonable explanations (eg gritting the road only works if there is sufficient volume of traffic, if there is no traffic gritting doesn't work. OR - in those countries these conditions are typical and so infrastructure is geared towards it.) people still ask the exact same question. Does my nut in Missing the odd day of work happens for different reasons in different countries - I was off work today anyway but if I was going to work I would just have walked - it's only 3-4 miles if you work in the city. But listening to these people on the radio... sheesh
  14. It isn't one of the more eloquent posts on here is it? So be it. I often struggle with this particular point anyway. I remember quids mentioning the stepford word before and giving him a right old ear-bashing. He took it well
  15. I am, to all intents and purposes, married. Nor would I consider cheating.. but I can say what I see surely?
  16. I hate I hate I hate ... Peter Pan But no.. I also hate any accusations of a "them and us" - it suggests a homogenous "us" or "them" which a reading of anythread makes clear doesn't exist - the forum is often accused of arguing about anything it possibly can.. arguing can't exist without differing opinions so how can it be "us and them" Plus... mikecg has assimilated quite seamlessly into the forum - ach I just don't get it. There are SOME people who don't like.. say... peckham. This does not mean the EAST DULWICH FORUM doesn't like Peckham and ANYONE WHO DISAGREES is wrong. I love Peckham... so there. Some others on here don't. What are ya gonna do huh?
  17. Haven't I mentioned my neighbour? She is well lush (in the gorgeous sense - not the booze sense)
  18. Arguably 15 years too late, but the much talked-about set which Letterman pulled, and motivated Hicks to write a 16 page hand-written letter finally aired on the Letterman show last week, along with an interview with his mother Mary Bill Hicks' final Letterman routine It comes in 3 segments which play sequentially - the third segment has the routine but the interview with his mum is worth watching
  19. Its a tune im fond of myself, keef. .
  20. tsk - if you were brought up proper catholics you would have learnt some control techniques and be done with this condom business [ in a safe long term relationship obviously. I'm not saying go an play roulette....]
  21. no man who can write as many witty pub reviews on BitE is QUITE that bad yet snorky methinks the lady doth etc etc..
  22. Is there a better ballad? About being Irish in England in the late 80s/early 90s? Or even being a minority growing up curious in the face of accepted wisdom anywhere? Berties Brochures
  23. Another one he is famous for Solid Air I first saw him in the Mean Fiddler (Harlseden version) years and years ago - he was never going to become a favourite artist of mine but some fantastic stuff
  24. Slosh post made me laugh
  25. Sorry to hear that Barn Seeker - someone I know reported something similar a couple of days ago too. It's happened to me before and emotions are raw - hopefull nothing too valuable (useful/sentimental as much as cashworth) was taken
