and whoever said any of us weren't entitled to an opinion? disagreeing with each other's opinions has long been the lifeblood of this place - otherwise everyone would post theirs', that would be that and we could all have an early night!

true Brendan true But as I found out to my cost, starting a thread with an ironic title (viz: using a song title with Americans in it) became a platform for some anti-American feelings which, not only did I not share, but obviously bothered some American's on the forum (and gave some people an excuse to wind me up!)

I'm never sure if this thread (and others related to YM's) are meant as lightweight joshing or serious or what. What seems innocuous banter veers into misogyny sometimes IMO - are some people really saying they haven't seen any attractive mothers in the area?? Some of the mum's in the area are snooty and/or aggressive but most/many aren't - same as most other groups really - but only women seem to get tarred with ugly insults

Pandora - Jah's advice is probably as good a starting point as any - so so many variables ina town this size it's too easy to recommend something to someone only for them to like something else I used to like going to the Intrepid Fox in Soho for my rock kicks but that has been closed down (moved to Centrepoint but not as good IMO) If the music in 72 is you scene then you are better off going to a gig than any bars in central London - again Time Out listings is a good place to start. If you fancy something off the cuff, then try the Borderline off Charing Cross Rd - they have a good selection of bands and American singer-songwriters of an Americana bent (Calexico, Lambchop etc)

I wish my bands did! Nah it's more like the birthday cards at work - If I get to sign one that has everyone else on there already it's very hard to come up with anything original ( I should have just done it... I know...)

I would even extend it to allow non EU citizens and non-Asylum seekers to stay longer (eg Australian/Safrican and US citizens) 2. should it be reduced and to how much? Nope. Lastly - building bigger walls doesn't really help the economy does it? Finding after finding shows how immigration helps the economy. Now, immigration does have an impact on some members of indigineous communities viz: salary levels and job security. But then many more jobs are being EXPORTED anyway - and that is the real indicator of where this is all going. To suggest the local economy can be managed by any indigenous country through policy and immigration controls is folly. WItness the whole current crisis as a result of the packaged bad-debts in America and it's knockon effects here

It's a hardy perennial one that SteveT - the DailyMail were banging on about it back in the 40s as well. Should immigration have been stopped then? The answer then would probably be yes but 70 years on, really? How would Britain look compared with the rest of the world now? When the question is asked do people mean everywhere? Or do they mean the UK? Interesting site here regarding immigration across the world Immigrations stats I think the whole idea and worry about it is becoming increasingly.... not irrelevant - it still has negative and positive impacts... but people being born now would do well to look at the wider world. The world is opening up in ways it never has before and it is more useful to see oneself as a world citizen than that of a specific country IMO

the term "racist" isn't offensive SteveT - the belief system behind someone who believes other cultures and races to be inferior or "other" is.. Do you not find it suspicious that immigrants themselves want to stop immigration? Now that they've arrived and want to pull the draw bridge up? And what about emigration - should we stop that as well? By all means bring up topics Steve - you don't usually invite irate responses. But it's fairly obvious from any discussion in any forum (tv, radio etc) on immigration/race does become emotive.. and not just on this forum
