  1. nice one Lizzy - big thanks (although posting it? When it came time to lend the Wire DVD series 4 - as soon as Chavwivalasdegree heard about it the doorbell went exactly 92 seconds later!)
  2. As an early Bauhaus fan I used to love this ad but it also serves as a useful reminder that adverts are fantasy at best and lies at worst
  3. Chrono Trigger is fondly remembered by all RPGers I enjoyed skied of Arcadia on the DC - even if it did take random battles to tear-inducing levels Anyone play Vagrant Story on the PS1? Wish I still had that somewhere
  4. I can barely believe it when I see this happen - I often wonder how long they have been waiting for the bus to arrive.... as Chris Rock says - "just because you can do something don't mean it's to be done"
  5. where other people suggested what they would like to see on the menu, Louisa practically demands it, whilst also declaring what constitutes normal I'm sure Dan or Paul could point out that many 'normal' working-class people enjoy the fish on the menu just as much as anyone else Louisa - I know you often hold strident views but that post seemed especially mean-spirited in light of the owner's recent postings on here
  6. Lizzy You sound like my kind of gaming gal Final Fantasy VII was my big revelation - but even tho FF X gets a bad rap I spent a lot of time on there Finished Devil May Cry on "Dante Must Die" setting as well
  7. the Carling ad that PGC posted stars Stephen Frost - who ran the local comedy club at EDT back in the day
  8. keeping the adverts local too I see PGC
  9. Annaj Big fan of Tori Amos's cover versions too. I had the Teen Spirit cover back in the day on a "cassingle" but haven't heard for years Her Strange Little Girls album regularly throws up little gems - my favourites being: Enjoy The Silence (Depeche Mode) Real Men (Joe Jackson) and as a b side she did "After All" from Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World album The Iggy original of China Girl beats Bowie's rerecording hands down (although I love the extended Stevie Ray Vaughan solos on the album) but Bowie has done some excellent live versions subsequently (and some piss poor ones too to be fair) That original and stuff
  10. Miestas! - how lovely is that
  11. I didn't know that SKS, but I guess it makes sense (until we are all tracked by our mobiles anyway) No kudos for me MP - I dialled 999 - I reckon I could do it again easy Hard to believe I only had 3 pints (or was it 4) - I feel like I've been in an American Football game without the gear
  12. Sorry Chav - can't agree with you on most of that If people want to worry so much about what others think then let them - but yet again, that has nothing to do with class there isn't as many people as you think who are middle-class and spend their time "looking down on" the working class - just because there some that DO shouldn't allow you to generalise in exactly the same way to complain about how working-class get generalised and where does "spoil their otherwise 'perfect' life." come from? Anyone think they have a perfect life? Anyone at all? Everytime this debate comes up it amounts to the same thing. There are some people who like to look out for others and take an interest in what goes on around them and there are others who are, to use an Irish expression, "m? f?iners" - ie out for themselves. TO constantly bring class in to the debate makes the whole thing tribal which isn't going to solve any problems
  13. Tonight - about 1:15am on the way back from EDT, up to the top end of LL, adrift in a wash of mp3-age I was accosted by a guy who had suddenly parked up and asked me if i had a phone A first floor flat was, if not ablaze, pretty close to being ablaze and no answer forthcoming from the buzzers A quick call to 999 - the expected fire/ambulance questions and within minutes of me giving the address they were there - no more than 3-4 minutes? Some of the neighbours had suspected something earlier but were assured by the flat in question that everything was ok (hmmmmm) but by the time the time the fire engine arrived flames were visible and smoke filled the flat and no-one inside Everyone involved was first rate - and a big shout to the guy in the car who stopped me for a phone - without him the whole situation would be very different
  14. nah ???? - just hard to tell sometimes I fear Asset may be right tho - this is lounge bound unless someone can help with an unruly passenger on a morning train Anyone?
  15. oooh look you see - he posted same time as me and made exactly the same point except he spoiled it with the French thing - I will never understand this "thing" between the French and the English
  16. indeed you do - but my point being that not all of any class can be easily categorised. Which was much the same as quids point
  17. did you? och I don't listen to you, you silll.. oops. just kidding. I always listen to you
  18. I know many people who look like middleclass who are thoroughly decent, hardworking and nice people...with crap dress sense....
  19. ;-) As I'm coming to realise ???? - and I'd be happy for anyone to call me on ot if I use the royal we again. Bad form and all that I look forward to the arguments around gambling - Personally, I love it. But I tend to keep well away from it these days. And I have no real problem with the number of shops in the area. I wouldn't be thrilled by one opening in the Woolwich - but that's more to do with size of the space and the fact that something more interesting could open there ummm...what else? Oh yes... the fact that it's a public forum doesn't preclude it from being cozy. Come along to the drinks. But it isn't a club...honest guv
  20. I've already err... robustly defended myself on the betting shop thread against Quids just now, so am wary of wading in again My eyebrow did raise when the original poster used the word chav so casually but we'll come back to that The reason I don't think calling someone chav is the same as black, is because when people discriminate against black people it's because of the colour of their skin - ie how they were born Chav and working-class are not interchangeable terms. When I was growing up (poor, working/unemployed dolescounging class) I took inspiration from Orwell when he said there was no finer human than one who did an honest days work and came home and used his spare time to read and improve his mind (I paraphrase but you get the gist) Many working-class families do just that. Chav as a term tends to be used when referring to general uncouth/disrepectful to others/meanspirited public behaviour. That the people who exhibit this behaviour wear a certain uniform sometimes is self-evident. What isn't evident is that is always working-class people who do this. I know of many a middle-class chav So to call someone a chav in my book is nothing like referring to black people in the same way - it's labelling someones behaviour. The guy on the train SOUNDS like a gobshite at least doesn't he?
  21. ???? - ha - on that point you have me. I shouldn't have used "we". I wasn't speaking for a forum collective (how could I - there are 1500 odd people on here) - although if I was to take "we" to mean everyone except you, I would make a defence for it The slightly tedious nature of your "this is a public forum etc etc" ignores the fact that I'm not arguing with the pros and cons of betting shops. My beef with your argument is that instead of talking about the merits or otherwise of betting shops you seem determined to compare them to restaurants and bars. Despite arguments to the contrary, you don't engage with any of them Several people, who you dismiss as the "petit bourgeois" have spelled out their prediliction for gambling - be it big time or nickle and dime stuff. One or two people with families who have suffered overly have come out against. You ignored all of this to make a cheap point - namely And you don't have a lot to back that statement up with. You can point to some posts arguing against the spread of betting shops and the negative effect on communities but to conclude, as you do , is not an opinion - it's factually wrong As it happens my family is riddled with chronic addictions to both gambling and alcohol (not always both in the same person) and there ain't anything petit bour fucking geois about any of us. My point is you can't keep repeating the same guff about thebarsarequietsometimessowhydopeoplepickonbettingshops?? Because. they aren't. the same. thing It is a public forum and there is a debate to be had on it - but it would be useful if people referred to the points others make in the counter-argument. The first time you did that in this thread was when I singled your post out.. . And to then finish with is just chip on shoulder stuff. You haven't the first idea about me other than what you read on here - I make no similar judgement on you (and have supported you on other threads - not that I imagine you care one jot) - I merely said that if you can summarise as incorrectly as you did your opinion can be ignored. You could counter that by expanding your argument but instead you've gone on a personal attack (to which I probably shouldn't respond). By your post I'm not sure if you think liberal and original thought are good things or not by the way Having re-read the thread just now to be sure (to be sure) I caught a few things that I missed first time. Keef taking my point about restaurants being social and betting just a vice and calling it nonsense. Sorry keef, but your description to portray the social side of it doesn't sound like the wife and kids would be either welcome or want to join in. Again, I'm not saying that makes betting shops bad - I'm just saying there is a difference with pubs/restaurants beyond the possibility of addiction to either - and why more of one would be preferable to more of the other - but I'm not against betting shops (which I'm sure I have posted somewhere on here, just not on this thread)
  22. this is one for Keef as he spoke about it yesterday I'm biased but I believe this to be one of the best covers ever
  23. lot's of self-deprecating going on people, but there are some sterling efforts in there - although I make no similar claim for: Give Me Hope (& Greenwood) Joanna - Eddy Grant Sema Thai Me Kangaroo Down Sport Surmatime
  24. the headlines cost of the air flight makes it an apparant no-brainer But when I factor in: trips to and from the airports (and asociated costs compared to 176 to Waterloo) hanging around airports for hours and the temptation tospend money on crap the shitty feeling I get when I get off the plain at the other end - esp after taxing around a runway for 30 mins still got to pay to get to the town centre I've arrived at The airline also sting you every step of the way - checkin costs money for example I generally still plump for trains whenever possible Also buying 2 singles can be a big saving the ?100 + fare comes down to 2x?30 if I go for single journeys (I'm not defending the layrinthing system - just sayin is all)
