  1. cue many recommendations/non-recommendations for Si Manga, I'll wager
  2. also a good a time as any to point to the Search function at the top right of the page - invaluable
  3. for me it's not even an anti-monarchy thing (although I am) the sort of awards/recognition in any sphere or society I'm suspicious of Whether it's the Brit Awards for music, the Oscars/Baftas for film, or OBE/MBEs in British society - I just don't understand what they are for. I don't get the rules for selection and I don't get the rules for deciding on a winner. I know what they are SUPPOSED to be, but I'm suspicious of them all. ( how long before Scorcese got an Oscar for example) If I make an album, write a book, direct a film, or invent something - that's my choice and my reward comes from the upshot of that - be it sales, kudos, patent or whatever. Absolutely these awards will give an uplift to anyone selected - but why THEM and not anyone else working in that field It seems to be more about validating the awarder, not the awardee (if those are real words)
  4. There is a lot to agree with there BJL - but I can't ever see giving up my rock and pop (although what falls into that category is debateable) And this Thursday is ANOTHER one I can't make the Gowlett, but next week is looking a cert
  5. Strangers When We Meet - David Bowie
  6. well as that's called Father John it's CLEARLY not me ahem
  7. I suspect you knew that was coming, Mockney and so defences were up before the film started. I've been there with some films and there is always that barrier between me and the film - I end up admiring it rather than enjoying it
  8. probably not insane but I'm not sure I'd like to spend Christmas with BJL ;-) (I suspect he/she is actually pretty interesting and gets a lot read so I'm being a bit tongue in cheek. But then again he/she only said they were over-rated, not bad per se)
  9. I'd rather normal people doing good work got paid properly, not have one in a million plucked out arbitrarily for a pat on the back by a long-redundant institution... but that's just me oooh which reminds me - the over-rated thread......
  10. Tillie, one of my fave quotes that. I used it the other week on Lady MacGabhann who hadn't heard it before and she sprayed tea everywhere
  11. I have always been impressed by those lists of people who HAVE turned it down Just say NO kids
  12. I popped in on Sunday and it was very noticeabl that it was a new bar - there is now a proper connection between the two sides for a start, so you don't have to go outside, walk down the road and into the back bar Agree about the lack of ales Sue - I was with an ale drinker so didn't stop, but I liked the feel of the place and willbe back also
  13. interesting, monica... oh dear it's not looking good and Redgewells was great but you are so right about what followed. Same sisters as redgewells wasn't it? I get the impression they put everythng into the Italian relaunch - but it didn't work on any level. Well, the food might have been awesome but I was never going in to go in and try it as the decor was vile and I would have been the only one in there... I shudder at the memory
  14. I hadn't seen that one before no - but like it I once sat next to Graham Linehan in a tranny bar in Soho, watching a fledgling League of Gentlemen on stage, long long before they made radio or TV (true story)
  15. Dom said: but after his postings on other threads tonight I have my doubts! tinagwee: I'm with you girl - let's NOT have children together
  16. careful now DM - I was going to suggest the very same, until I realised I was committed elsewhere - but by God it would be a good forum outing wouldn't it?
  17. `I love DulwichMum all the more for knowing she visits Graham Linehan's site...
  18. it's lined up on my + citizen - thanks for bumping it up
  19. Asset - short answer is yes, but no so much you would notice
  20. Mike P - YOU have too much time on your hand sir
  21. all I can think of is that if CWALD is editing her public posts, just WHAT was in there?
  22. Thanks for the info bob AndrewDBlack (stranger round these parts these days aren't you?) - you are indeed correct
  23. off the top of my head, some of the reasons why different schools would have different budget issues premises (different states of repair) mix of children (if one school "succeeds" in attracting better students then another school will have a potentially more volatile mix - temperament, aptitude - of students) salary levels
  24. "iiiiiiii'm..... sooooooooooooooooooo.... sooorrrrrrreeeee"
