  1. All sounds reasonable to me H - so either a) there is more to it than that or b) the fighters really are extremely silly - to the point that stretches credulity
  2. Great pic Piers - and a good link to the NYT as well Papers these days need to use "hitherto" more often
  3. The old Woolwich site is being occupied as we speak - signs went down a while back and work is clearly happening. I THINK it's just another estate agent - KFH - but at least it's better than an empty shop
  4. (all the EDF drinks are open to everyone - I'm just trying to attract as many people as possible) As discussed in the drinks @ the Actress thread, georgia is stepping down as drinks organiser (pantomime "awwwwww") In memory of all the fine nights she has organised, we have booked the upstairs at the Phoenix (atop Denmark Hill station) for Friday november the 12th from 6:30pm* for a massive send-off (pantomime "yaaaaaaaay") So it's not just ANY drinks. It's time to step up and buy that gal a drink. If you've been before you owe it to her, if you haven't then now's the chance The Phoenix hosted one of the best (and busiest) forum drink nights pics here so it should be a grand night. See you there * yep that's early but at this time of year the only option if we are to secure a spot
  5. As a reminder of last time (and courtesy of OutofFocus) last EDF phoenix drinks I might start another thread to pull people who think this one is still about the actress tho...
  6. Man I wish I could be sure the "not right for the area" type posts were windups or not - because if they genuinely believe that I would soooo go to town pearson is correct - the building itself = fugly but apart from that who cares. - And it's no uglier than the police station or the co-op pharmacy across the road But there is a difference between wanting to tart a place up and being and out and out snob
  7. Reading teh posts on here, I'm not sure why the onus is on the firefighters to justify their actions BEFORE managements. Both may be being intransigent and unhelpful but before we condemn those about to strike, are we really so sure the reasons for the proposed changes are sound? When it comes to bin collections and postal deliveries, most people seem to be upset with the massive reductions in those services going back decades - the unions all warned about exactly the impact. Would it not be better to support the firefighters at first and have management explain themselves? And if they sound reasonable THEN the onus is back on the firefighters? But I've heard nothing but vague management-jargon for the changes. Maybe they are 100% necessary but I can't see why yet
  8. Err... I've been joking too or was that not obvious But now I know I've been hidden... Well, all bets are off ;-)
  9. You are right narnia. Deep breaths Sean, deep breaths
  10. Exactly! We didn't know what we had when we had it !
  11. I like Hoopers but the last drinks there were barren - The Phoenix was chosen because many people have voiced it as their favourite night. As I recall, the last drinks at the Mag (a couple of years ago) were poor as well. No guarantee that the sucess at the Phoenix would be replicated - but I mooted it, Georgia agreed, several others followed and I've booked it this morning. Seems fair enough no? If everyone piles in and says no to the Phoenix now then fair enough but..
  12. the human will to survive isn't "inspired" by anything tho, is it?
  13. I'm aiming for 15 - a few either way and we should still be ok, but the more the merrier We are limited to 40 tho so if the majority are thinking of turning up later we could struggle. On a good drinks night we see 20-30 people, on a few occassions more than that and for Georgia's last hurrah I'm expecting at least 30
  14. Hal Are you the doctor in Shutter Island? I've read silverfox's posts many many times now and I am still no wiser. It is a lesson in obfustication take the simpler lines "There's no science involved here. The baboon is using its wits and a tool to achieve an objective. " using wits and tools IS science. Maybe I am stupid Hal - but can your summarise the insight here? As far as I can see Huguenot and Mockney have grasped them in their entirety. It feels like Gillian McKeith telling me I don't understand food like she does
  15. Sounds fun too vbc Narnia. Would be good to see you turn up. That is indeed the pub above Denmark hill (spookily, as i type this my bus is going right past it)
  16. can't move individual posts unfortunately MM - I'll sick a note on the main thread. Cheers for heads up
  17. Definitely not an attack or a bug ? but a ?feature? in this case Smileys are substituded for their old keyboard character equivalents ? so a semi colon, hyphen and close bracket gets you a winkey smiley Try putting a space or something after the open bracket
  18. VBC ? sorry but from posts to date the 12th it is (subject to conf) If that date has to change again that?s fine but I won?t be able to attend so someone else will need to take over planning I?ve spoken to the Phoenix and they can give me the mezzanie but I need to have plenty of people there from 6:30 ? at this time of the year I can?t book from say 7:30 or 8 o clock So can I ask people likely to attend to say yes they can make it for that time? If not I?ll have to get back to them and rethink venue/dates Cheers
  19. Keef you say patronising, but what else to do with someone who spent so much time starting new threads screaming blue murder I agree the thread in question could have been retitled and a discussion about pubs that show football without sound would be useful but it did seem to be specifically about the Actress and despite what you say, the current Actress thread covers everything from lighting, glasses to food drink and everything in between I also spent what I thought a fair bit of time explaining why some threads get dealt with one way and others another but still we hear comments like Dorothy?s ?bizarre special treatment afforded to The Actress? Which I can?t understand on any level Remember ? no post was removed, just moved to the relevant section. I don?t see any need for any outcry (and by outcry I mean the 3 threads Atticus started claiming he was being censored and removed with plenty of people weighing in to support it) The posts are there. Negative or positive about the Actress. Noone is stopping anyone from reading or posting them
  20. Quite - and yet it's God who gets thanked. Go figure
  21. this thread for example It might end up getting moved to the business section but at the moment it's juuuust about more pertinent to "ED as an area and the vibe it offers" rather than about specific businesses. But only just I'm pretty sure when it gets moved snorky/huncamunca won't start several threads asking whyohwhy etc. Although he might now
  22. Oh and multiple threads about the same topic is a perennial pain in the proverbial. You can?t stop ALL of them, and those that you make people complain. But many do get stopped, quite rightly, as the place would be overrun and unreadable if they weren?t But again it?s probably more practical/time-constraint reasons than discrimination against any posters as to which do and don?t get shut for being repeat threads The ?old? Actress thread is very much live and has been on the first page consistently, so is still the goto thread. If it had been dormant and on page 3 or 4 of the business section it?s possible that the newer thread would stand a better chance of ?surviving?
  23. " Sean, beautifully brutal but inconcise. Have you decided that you don't quite care for my use of the word censorship? Perhaps then, that was a tad harsh. Or, were you simply offended that I dared to speak out against EDF Admin fav 'The Actress'? If the latter, then a consice explanation as to why 'The Actress' (in all its praising glory)thread was allowed 'lounge' status for weeks, as opposed to my critique of said pub, which, survived for less than a pitiful two hours, is justified. Politely awaiting your defensive (and as read before) aggresive return. " Where to begin? Your use of censorship wasn't a "tad harsh" - it's completely, factually incorrect How was I offended? Why even use that word? You solicited feedback, I offered some, It is you who seems put out Asking why some posts stay in the Lounge for a sustained period whilst others are moved quicker seems a fair question to me That isn't what you did however - you still seek some martyrdome status where you are being ?censored? and your posts don't ?survive? and when you posts are moved to the wrong place you don't post in the Ask Admin section but start a whole new thread in another wrong section, making it all about YOU. It seems a bit over the top don?t you think? So why do some posts get moved more quickly than others? A bunch of reasons, among them: 1) There isn't a huge team moderating this place and stuff gets missed - feel free, as KK says, to use the Report this thread button 2) A thread can appear be about one thing but had a more general interest than the business in hand. I think Admin posted quite a long reason a few pages back in the original Actress thread as to why he was leaving it there for the time being. You might disagree but it?s fair to say that all business threads get moved as soon as they are seen to the correct area. You might not notice it because you didn?t start the thread but it happens As for the examples pearson mentions ? JD Wetherspoon isn?t an ED business ? there is a discussion about the possibility of them moving to the area which is wider topic. If the were to open and started posting offers and announcements then they too would be moved. Sainsbury?s ? I have missed any threads about Sainsbury?s business. I have seen a couple about rats in a park which involve the possible oversight of Sainsbo?s as a caretaker but that really isn?t the business they are in and the issue remains rats in a local park
  24. So atheists wouldn't have survived, silvefox? You seem to be suggesting they lack mental strength and fortitude?
  25. I've read I've decided Atticus is unreasonable.
