I guess it's a pretty inaccurate survey...
  2. The Palmerston and Camberwell Arms are undenibaly gastropubs - pubs which have had a dining room and kitchen fitted, now more known for their food, but you can still go in for a pint, and they carry a full selection of draft beers. Franklins doesn't really fall into that category, the bar area is very small and doesn't really "feel" like a pub. Conversely places like The Bishop or Great Exhibition are not gastro pubs. You cannot book tables, there is no separate dining room, and the food is generic.
  3. You seemed to be saying it was a gastro pub! But I'd say it isn't a pub at all. Just a restaurant.
  4. If your mother is a builder and you're riding a 100cc scooter carrying one M&S bag and one Iceland bag, what is the probability of being stopped by the police? Please show all your working, clearly listing any estimated physical quantities.

Louisa Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Otta yes I agree the plumber/office worker > comparison is weak inevitably because class is > about more than money But if someone from a certain "class" can earn more money than someone from a supposedly higher class, have their own business, have a nicer house, drive a nicer car, maybe even send their kids to private school if they choose... the concept of class starts to become irrelevant.
  6. Is the 6-month-old exempt from the 6x6 rule?
  7. Well... maybe 2hrs out one afternoon with baby in the harness thingy...
  8. Oh right... I see. Waverley Arms sounds great, just the kind of local I'd like to have, but is alas a bit of a trek for me. I've never been to the Ivy House for the same reason... maybe I'll kill two birds with one stone one of these days.

  11. It's only 100m - would take two people literally 2 minutes to carry. I'm sure if you post the name of your road, someone nearby will volunteer to help you.
  12. I expect you're right Stu. Even Bermondsey/Canada Water/North Greenwich wouldn't have gone ahead if it wasn't for Canary Wharf.
  13. I dunno... it's a slang word and therefore not sure if any formal definition is really correct. Of course there's a correlation with social class, but I wouldn't personally say it's a defining characteristic. miga, to take an example from popular culture - maybe Harry Enfield's loadsamoney character?
  14. I'm not so convinced the term is dated, just over-used. Some people (well one person) claim that almost every pub in ED is now a gastro-pub, but in reality there's only one.
  15. I know some people think the word "chav" is loaded with class prejudice, but I disagree. As far as I'm concerned it's about how people choose to act, how they present themselves, and the desire to belong to a certain "tribe". When I was (much) younger we'd use the word "townie" to refer to a similar social group... plenty of who came from comfortable homes in nice suburbs. I don't think that anyone believes the gold chain and tracksuit wearing stereotype applies to the whole of the "working class" (for want of a better term).

I've only had the vietnamese food there (not the Chinese dishes), but it wasn't good. Wulli is good but if you're looking for shredded beef, sweet and sour pork, lemon chicken, etc then that's not really their forte.
  17. While East Dulwich, West Dulwich and Dulwich Village are separate districts, surely they all fall within the area of Dulwich. I don't think it's the same situation as somewhere like Hampstead, where "Hampstead" and "Hampstead Village" are synonymous, and South & West Hampstead are considered separate areas. See also Kensington.
  18. Never even knew that place was there! Best of luck.
  19. Just moved a 10 min walk away, the other side of bellenden rd. Would have quite happily stayed on Ivanhoe Rd if the right house had come up. As cle says, the north end is quieter, with bigger gardens. But it's all fine. There are lots of nice roads around... Grove Hill Rd is really nice. Oglander/Ondine Rd and the side roads off them are good. It's all in the eye of the beholder I guess. But in terms of being in the middle of all the good stuff, Ivanhoe rd is perfect.
  20. I'd like to see another good win each for Khan and Brook before making the fight.

KidKruger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > For me, it's get the builders to put the structure > up and make it weatherproof then run with it from > there doing what bits you can yourself / bringing > tradesmen in. There's probably something to be said for that approach. All too often the finish is rushed because the builders want to move onto the next job.
  22. Yeah I disagree with root on that bit of course... would never want to see a young life wasted because of stupidity on the roads.
  23. I lived on Ivanhoe Rd for five years. Although not necessarily the most attractive street, it's one of the most conveninent locations in the area. An easy walk to Camberwell, Lordship Lane, Bellenden Rd or Rye Lane. Denmark Hill and ED stations both pretty close. Shame the pub's gone. Walked through the estate every day without incident. Kept my (fairly new/nice-ish) car parked outside the house without any problems. The only real downside was that it's pretty noisy between Bromar Road and Avondale Rise with buses, emergency vehicles, and boy racers.
