  1. I've been thinking about this... not just oil, but fossil fuels in general. And then I read an article about Dale Vince and Ecotricity. Lots of people on here talk a good talk, but has anyone put their money where their mouth is and signed up with a green electricity supplier?
  2. Keef Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > there were several hrdles to overcome if it was going to happen... Keef - is that a joke or a serious quote?
  3. Atticus, you should consider yourself lucky. If you lived in a flat, they wouldn't even let you put up a dormer across the back.
  4. Jimmyay, Kat - you may have a point, in that tragically, there does appear to be a problem amongst young, black males in London. But the way you (and others) choose to dwell on that on this thread just strikes me as rather insensitive and tasteless. Emotions are still raw, and friends and family have undoubtedly been reading this thread. You have to consider people's feelings, and you have to avoid tarring huge swathes of the community with the same brush. And as Dully suggests, other communities have their own problems too.
  5. A tenner for a great view and a glass of champagne... beats the London Eye.
  6. Or maybe the good stuff just gets snapped up as soon as it hits the shelves?
  7. Cassius - I agree, it has improved recently. But if I'm ill, I'd rather see a doctor than a nurse practitioner. So I'm off.
  8. Yes, but what cuts in particular do you oppose? I think people of most political persuasions seem to agree that at least some spending cuts are needed.
  9. Alec John Moore Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If its a struggle for us in developed > countries then it must be even more difficult for > people who live at the bottom of the pile as it > were. No, the opposite is true. As I have already pointed out, ?1 buys more in poorer countries than it does in richer countries. I looked at that shopping list above, it simply doesn't add up to 20 meals. I know you mean well Alec, and I don't mean to suggest that poverty awareness is not important, but IMO this exercise is misguided.
  10. Ridgley Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > At work place my colleagues, have a lunch club > where there all cheap in weekly to save money I > think it is close to that amount. Lunch for ?1 each - sure. Lunch, dinner, and breakfast? It's possible, but only if you're willing to survive on boiled rice and roadkill.
  11. It's not temporary, it's become the established status quo. Near-zero interest rates, huge government debt, cautious investment strategy by banks and corporates, a culture of saving cash... > any country which successfully reduces their > dependency on oil by 50% in little over twelve > months is not to be ignored. Sounds interesting, do you have a link?
  12. Actually the Japanese economy is very finely balanced. All that national debt Huguenot mentions tends to be bought up by the Japanese banks, keeping the cost of borrowing very low for the government. If consumer/bank behaviour changes, the whole thing will come crashing down. Also, Japanese companies have plummeted in value over the last 20 years too... the Nikkei 225 history makes the FTSE look like a runaway success. As a society it has its pros and cons... as an economy, it has an uncertain future.
  13. Getting prisoners to work in a way which benefits society - yes Public humiliation and forced hard labour - no
  14. Haha, that old thread made me chuckle... especially MM's musings on how he could possibly eat for ?100 a week, if he made a few sacrifices! I don't think ?1 a day per head would be possible - I think the minimum you'd need would be getting on for double that, if you're talking 3 meals a day. But it's rather meaningless, as ?1 buys a lot more food in the developing world than it does here.
  15. Wagon wheels?? I think they were always pretty cheap and nasty...
  16. James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The most neutral countries on earth Switzerland > and Sweden spend a similar proportion on defence > forces. According to Wikipedia : Switzerland - 0.8% of GDP Sweden - 1.3% of GDP UK - 2.5% of GDP I really believe that our defence budget is way too high, and we shouldn't get involved in conflicts which needn't involve us. I don't know what has brought about this over-inflated sense of importance... maybe we just can't let go of the past.
  17. I don't see a problem with hunting game for meat. Surely it's preferable to eating intensively farmed meat? Personally I don't understand the pleasure in killing an animal, but each to their own I suppose.
  18. Why does the supermarket have to be precisely en route from the station to your house? Surely the DKH Sainsbury's is only a 3-4 minute walk from the station?
  19. If someone asked to taste the Fosters or Stella, I'd find it rather strange. But ales which you might not have tried before... seems fair enough. The cost to the pub is negligible, especially if it's a quiet evening.
  20. Fry up some diced onions with your choice of spices, add baked beans, simmer for 5 mins. Eat with a naan bread.
  21. But seriously... "WHY HAS SUCH A PLACE BEEN PUT IN THIS NICE AREA"... that has to be a joke, right?
  22. Saying stupid things on a forum is not the same as vigilantism, is it? It's not even a fine line. Surely at a time when people are paranoid about perceived escalating crime in the area, some cold hard facts might actually be a good thing.
  23. thebestnameshavegone Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > In this area especially, considering some of the > stuff you see on here, it'll no doubt lead to > increased vigilantism. What sort of "vigilantism" are you expecting? Groups of men patrolling Lordship Lane with pitchforks?

If they have only scratched the paint, I'd suggest getting it re-sprayed out of your own pocket - will probably be cheaper in the long run. (Obviously if they have etched right into the metal, it's a bigger job).
