  1. If you want something that's small, produces a lot of bass for the size, and you have a few hundred quid to spend, then these Bose things are just the ticket. IMO the sound quality is very poor compared with proper hi-fi, but everyone has their own priorities I guess.
  2. Although I think the BBC generally do an OK job, the TV license concept seems hopelessly outdated. Surely it's only a matter of time before the BBC channels and website are subscription based.
  3. So, a similar magnitude to the amounts the government injected into Lloyds or HBOS - i.e. it is significant.
  4. Wow! Excellent news, congratulations.
  5. Iceland has an Icelandic owner. Who would have thought it? Check out the Wikipedia page : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland_(supermarket) ... is that the Walworth Road store, pictured on the right?
  6. I expect the bike boxes are all taken up, but it could be worth chasing up with SMBJones or James Barber. Unfortunately the bike probably won't last the night if you leave it locked up outside. Maybe it's worth considering a fold-up bike? Anyway, welcome to the area... I'm sure you'll like it. People are sometimes snobby about estates, but I think this one is generally OK. Don't let the abundance of bull-terriers put you off.
  7. No way. Why on earth would they want you to leave an envelope of cash in the room? Best case scenario is that they're hoping to pocket the money, while telling the management the room was empty. Worst case scenario is that the money will disappear, and it will be your word against theirs. Neither of these would make me feel even slightly better about the world.
  8. Huguenot, after giving it some thought, I endorse your hypothesis.
  9. Alan - why do you remove your posts? I don't get it. Is it some kind of joke?

  11. SeanMacGabhann Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The drug dealing analogy was a stretch obviously I'm glad you realise that! You only have to take a bus up Walworth Rd (or really any high streeet) to realise how disruptive illegally parked cars can be - you'll find no argument from me there. But sometimes the behaviour of the traffic wardens (or whatever they're called now) can be truly appalling.
  12. In this case, it appears as though it's a fair cop - the sign is there for all to see. But the fact is that parking enforcement do use predatory, sneaky tactics and frequently issue tickets in cases which are debatable, to say the least (although this isn't really one of them). The assertion that the motorist is always in the wrong is simply not true, and the drug-dealer analogy comes across as rather self-righteous.

So obviously worth 700K.
  14. A quick search on findaproperty suggests than maybe 500-550K is the right amount. Can't see many (any?) 3 beds above that. Not worth me spending too much time researching though, it's all out of my budget!
  15. I reckon it's perfectly possible to get a 3 bed terrace in ED for around 500K (still a hell of a lot of cash though)

  17. Opening of minkturtle's first post... "I'm particularly stupid..."
  18. minkturtle - actually I don't think you sound stupid at all. These questions have probably occurred to most people at some point, and it's better that you ask the questions than pretend to know the answers. Economic growth is important, as it is strongly correlated to employment rates. We are in debt to whoever wants to lend us money (i.e. buy bonds)... governments, banks, hedge funds, private individuals, etc. You're probably not alone in thinking that the credit crunch was a storm in a teacup, but there were heavy job losses - with many more to come.
  19. There is absolutely no way driving into central London during the week is cheaper than public transport. (although it is worth considering on a Sunday, when parking is free and trains/tubes generally shut down)
  20. I think the snowflakes are just out of focus...
  21. I walked to Moorgate when it was snowing. It took ages. Goose Green to London Bridge alone is over an hour's walk.
  22. I would expect to pay extra, given the higher rents/costs, lack of buying power, and different business model. Many people would consider it worth paying a premium for the sake of supporting local businesses, and a thriving high street (although of course, that is highly subjective). If you live off LL, there is value in the proximity also. But double the price seems excessive to say the least. I'm all for supporting local businesses, but at the same time, they need to stand up on their own merit, in terms of quality/selection of stock and customer service, which needs to be balanced with price. (SeanMac has a point, in that some supermarket items are overpriced in comparison with local shops)
  23. Neve, was it on a weekend or a weekday? From the sign, it looks as though it's a big no-no during the week.
  24. Given that most brits are anti fox hunting, we probably wouldn't mind too much. Besides, I don't think foxes are in danger of extinction any time soon.

Sure enough the light on the landing was on. > And I know, for an absolutely certain fact, that > the light was not on before. I can't help with the ghost-child, but perhaps with the light, the switch was resting half way on the rocker before you went to bed, and just sprung the rest of the way later on. One time in a hotel, we woke up in the middle of the night because the hair-dryer in the bathroom had switched itself on. Unlike you, I totally shit myself - thinking that there must be someone in the room - but there wasn't. The most likely explanation would be that it just hadn't been turned off properly.
