I like Huguenot's idea of sealing it up with some sort of suitable desiccant. The silica gel sachets you get with shoes might work, you can also get larger things you put in wardrobes/drawers/etc. Probably not worth spending any money though, as you can get basic 2nd-hand phones for next to nothing.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

evildrwallace - if the enforcement was so extensive that nobody would ever risk parking illegally, then it would cost a lot more money. Where would that money come from? I understand what you're saying in principle, but I'm not sure it adds up in practice. -

Is this "Simonet" character an old poster returning under a new name? I think I recognise his style. -
Surely you have to already consider yourself to be "spiritual", and at least have some level of latent belief in order to interpret these experiences as a sign from God? Wouldn't an aethiest seek to find another - any other - explanation?

What do residents really like about East Dulwich?

EMR - why not try advertising for flatmates locally? Not many 23yr olds can afford a place of their own in any part of London, and when you're that age, it's more fun living with people who you can socialise with anyway. -
This does sound perfect for a tie-in with Cinema Paridiso, especially as their own gear is a little rudimentary (or at least it was when I last attended one). But I would think that a capacity of 40 would be the minimum they'd be interested in. Also, given that lots of people have decent gear in their homes these days, you'd need to ensure that the per-person cost was significantly less than buying the DVD.

Waitrose or M&S TYPE supermarket - do we want one on LL?

It's not my intention to pick holes, to mock, or be unpleasant... so I apologise if that's how I came across. I'm genuinely interested, actually. Personally I can't imagine an event so profound and unquestioningly godly, which could leave you in no doubt about the existence of God. So of course, I am curious. But I understand if you don't want to share your experience with us...

Waitrose or M&S TYPE supermarket - do we want one on LL?
Jeremy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
To an extent, I agree with Puzzled... this forum is not necessarily representative of the entire community, and a handful of people on here will probably say that they don't want an M&S or Waitrose, to win their indie brownie points. I would be firmly in favour of it, if - for instance - there was only one other large-ish supermarket along LL. I don't think Supermarkets are the devil, and those of us who don't usually shop between 9-5 find them very convenient. But on the other hand, we do need to be respectful of existing established businesses, and people's livelihoods. And surely nobody is offended by the word bonkers! Come on, let's not start petty arguments for the sake of it. -
Yes, of course takeaways are a luxury product! If I was struggling for cash, there's no way I'd spend ?5 on a fish & chip dinner. Of course poorer people will be hit too, everybody has to pay VAT on something now and again. But as a general rule, richer people spend a greater percentage of their income on VAT-eligible products.

Surely if it's different for everyone, you can't possibly know that you've witnessed God! > I wouldn't say you have to already believe in > something specific in order to experience it, no. How do you reconcile that with the claim that "you have to want it to experience it"? Can you want to witness something you don't believe in?

Waitrose or M&S TYPE supermarket - do we want one on LL?
Jeremy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think it would be great, but only if it replaced Co-op, Sainsbury's, or Iceland. It would be very popular, especially with returning commuters at 6pm-8pm. However, the existing supermarkets are presumably profitable, so they won't be going anywhere. And as others have said, the impact on the independent shops would be unpredictable. -

You're saying that you have to already believe something in order to experience it? How can you be objective under these circumstances? Is it possible that your perceptions are skewed by an existing, unshakable belief?

Parking Fine Outside Sainsbury's Local on Lordship Lane
Jeremy replied to RicB's topic in The Lounge
With current volumes of traffic, if there were no bus lanes, buses wouldn't really be useable. And obviously it makes sense to give priority to vehicles carrying 100 people, above vehicles carrying typically 1-2 people. If you park in the bus lanes, buses have to pull out into the outside lane, not only delaying it's journey, but holding up all the other traffic behind it. BUT - I agree that traffic wardens are bloody annoying. I don't think they're on commission, but they do have targets, which encourage these predatory tactics. -
Huguenot Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Please remember that the vast majority of consumer > necessities are zero rated, so as Crimewatch says, > 'don't have nightmares'!!! Yep - I was actually in favour of the VAT rise when it was discussed a couple of months ago, as seems to target people who regularly buy "luxury" products. Many seemed to disagree with me though.

I don't buy into all this overwhelming consumerism, pressure to buy lots of stuff, etc. If you want to spend lots of money, go for it. If you don't, don't. Nobody is forcing anyone!
