What is replacing it I ask you? Erm... the business is still in East Dulwich, just down the road. We're losing nothing. The site is being replaced by a rather bland clothes shop, but at least clothes shops are more suited to the high street, where they might attract passing trade. Things change in 12 years, and there are other parts of London which have changed even more than ED. And yes Ibo, many people are being priced out of the market, regardless of their background - but again, this has happened all over London to varying degrees. To focus all of your contempt towards the "newcomers" to your local area is rather silly.
  2. I just looked up Dawson's Heights on t'interweb. For years, I've lived a few hundred metres away, but had never even heard of it.
  3. I'm sorry, but who could seriously miss a glaziers??
  4. According to wikipedia, Nitin Sawhney and Su-Elise Nash from Mis-teeq have lived in Dulwich. Again, not really rock n' roll though...
  5. I don't hate the restaurants in ED - but I feel that Palmerston and Franklins charge almost West End prices, and there's better food to be had for the money in town. Never tried The Green though, maybe I will give it a go!
  6. mattC is also being a bit harsh... but... he does have a point on the restaurants. A couple of them are pleasant enough, but nothing particularly memorable - which is strange, as the shops in the area seem to have something of a "foodie" bias.
  7. Bree - you would probably prefer Surrey Quays to East Dulwich! Not only do they have a River Island - they also have New Look and Burger King!
  8. They're planning on introducing tolls on the blackwall tunnel too...
  9. Ah, the Castle pub... another bad point in SE22. It's actually a really nice building, but it's fallen into a state of absolute disrepair, inside and out. It's a real shame, because we could do with a couple of nice traditional pubs in the area.
  10. If this is true, then it's a disgrace! Public transport cannot cope as it is... trains every 20 minutes in rush hour, people left standing on the platform...

Yeah, but that's the same principle as showing TV images of victims of car accidents, drug abuse, etc. And I don't think that really works... people still drink & drive, do drugs, etc...
  12. "The cost of private car ownership continues to fall in real terms year-on-year" Could you please explain? Petrol and road tax are rising. Congestion charge is going up. Other tolls are being introduced and proposed. And as far as I'm aware, servcing, MOTs, parts and insurance aren't getting cheaper?
  13. The Melbourne Grove one is OK I geuss. You can often get a same day appointment if you phone bang on opening time...
  14. Not to mention that frankly, in ED the transport isn't great, and having a car is very, very handy. Without it, my journey to work would be an extra 20 mins each way...
  15. Must have been recently that the horses were moved! Clippity cloppiting along Crystal Palace Road was a daily occurance until recently. As was large piles of horse poo in the road!
  16. OK, fair enough! Good luck to you Jamie, let us know if you get anywhere with the "sans agents" approach!
  17. To be honest, you'd be lucky to get something for that price. I'm trying to upgrade from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom flat, and it's hard to find anything decent for under 300k. I've seen one bedders go for up to 270k!
  18. It is Ibo who thinks there are "posh" establishments in our neighbourhood, not I...
  19. I moved here because at the time property prices were fairly reasonable, and I knew it wasn't a bad area as I had a few friends round here. I will probably buy here again, because of the nice bars, shops and restaurants, and the fact that it's relatively safe and quiet. Although saying that, the public transport is pretty bad... I frequently swear that I'll never again live in an area without a tube...
  20. I actually bought some monkfish yesterday, and it was delicious. It tasted very fresh - perfect when wrapped in parma ham, with a dollop of hollandaise. One thing I would point out is that they don't take cards - I know I should have asked, but you assume everyone does these days! Ibo - do you walk along Lordship Lane being confrontational towards the people shopping in the "posh" shops - or do you reserve your venom for your online outbursts?
  21. Hmmm... yes, it definitely looks occupied to me. You can see books and stationary by the windows. Really, of course, it should make room for a nice little cinema.
  22. Can someone explain to me what "man dem" means?
  23. The "open late" point is an important one. If you work full time, and tend to be busy on the weekends, then a nice local butcher/fishmonger/greengrocer is totally useless.
  24. TJS - where do you get this stuff? AndrewDBlack - I admire your geekiness!
  25. "why cant we have some sensible clothes shops with bargains in the area?" There are two charity shops on LL, and Sainsbury's will also sell clothes when it has been extended. Stop moaning you fool. If Petals wasn't there it would still be an empty junk shop. By the way, has anyone noticed the rather unsual clothes shop on LL towards the Plough, on your left?
