Sorry if I sounded negative, but even when the queue looks long, it tends to go down fairly quickly. And I don't think that you can really plan a business around the customers of one other shop! I think that an independant could do as well as a chain, it's just that it's hard to compete price-wise, so in order to attract customers, you generally have to offer something which the established names do not. Lack of london bridge trains at rush hour

So basically, we are a lower priority than the more lucrative Gatwick services, and higher profile tube extension. Not really a surprise... -
A word of caution if you've been burgled
Jeremy replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
A friend of mine, who used to live in Brixon, came home one day to find his front window broken (but no burglary). He had the window fixed immediately. The next day, he returned home to find that the still-soft putty around the window had been removed, and the theives had therefore silenty enetered the house, taking his computer and hi-fi. -
it doesn't benefit home owners who plan to move into a bigger place... because the next rung up the ladder is getting further and further away. The only winners are property investors - the very same people who have made it impossible for most young people to buy property in London.

No friendly runners in Dulwich Park
Jeremy replied to mightyroar's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Similarly to Red Cat... I am usually too exhausted and/or in pain (despite my slow pace) to attempt any pleasantries! -
Acedout - I think it's fair to say that most of us, even homeowners, are NOT pleased about the ridiculous rise in prices. It doesn't benefit anybody, unless you're a landlord, or you're going to take the money and run off abroad. Kathryn - I applaud your entrepreneurial spirit, but I don't think you're onto a winner with your plan to supply coffee to the queue outside the butchers.

Also, has anyone had their credit card cloned in ED recently?

What do our SE5 neighbours think of us?
Jeremy replied to timtim's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There are some good pubs/bars in Camberwell, it's sometimes worth a visit if you want to stay out late, or just want to try some different places. Unfortunately there's nothing there to persuade me to visit during the day time, expect for perhaps the asian supermarket. Oh, and the hospital for my annual stupid injury. -
Surely there must be some news...

Tube or tram would be nice though, wouldn't it! Anything but the crappy train which comes every 20 minutes, or the buses which take an hour to get into town. -

I hate Foxtons. They are thieving scum, and I mean that literally! If they come to LL, I will personally wage war on them!! -
If we were all more careful with our rubbish and didn't leave things for the foxes to scavenge, maybe they'd go away. Mikewbate is right - foxes would not hesitate in killing another animal for its supper. But that's their instinct, not a considered decision by mr fox! I don't think it's instinctive for humans to trap/kill animals. You can't really compare the behaviour of foxes and humans.

Damage to car on Nutfield Road - Grrrrrrrrr.....
Jeremy replied to nutty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
ED is not well enough connected to get rid of the car, in my opinion. Without a car, I'd spend at least 3-4 extra hours a week travelling. For example, my girlfriend's house is a 15-20 minute drive, but one hour by public transport, sometimes more. And maybe a front garden looks more pretty without a driveway, but it's a small price to pay! I've always valued function over aesthetics anyway... -
No! I can't stand the thought of those poor little cubs being impaled by your trap... http://www.sfondideldesktop.com/Images-Animals/Fox/Cub-1/Fox-Cub-1.Jpg

Damage to car on Nutfield Road - Grrrrrrrrr.....
Jeremy replied to nutty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Exactly... parking on the road, I often find scratches, dents, broken mirrors (on the road side *and* pedestrian side)... don't think I'll bother buying a fancy car until I have off street parking (pretty rare in ED). -
Bit of bother at The Castle last night!
Jeremy replied to Jeremy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
No row... just a bit of banter! He's even offered to give me a reference if I ever apply for a street cleaning job (should I get bored of working in the city), which I thought was very decent of him! -
Is that a roll with cheese in it... or just a ciabatta roll?!

Spadetown - I have swept up glass (and other litter) at least once in the past! I think I will pop in and ask if they can maybe sweep up each morning. -

True, it is a "working class" pub, and it's all part of the risk you take by living near a grotty hole like The Castle. But I've lived in rougher neighbourhoods than this, which much nastier pubs. What I do find shocking is that they don't even sweep the broken glass from the pavement, in what is still a family area after all. -
I agree with Ibo - for once! I don't think ED is posh at all. It is ceratinly pleasant, but that doesn't equal "posh". And we often mention the sense of community here, which is something you would more traditionally associate with a working class area - which this historically is. There is currently a nice mix of old and new residents, and I hope it stays that way as far as possible.

OK... my comments about their customers, and getting priced out of the area were a bit over the top in retrospect! But I am starting to get quite cheesed off with that place. There's still broken glass outside, you'd hope that the owners would have the common sense - and respect for the community - to clean it up. -
Some kind of brawl spilled over into the street... several police cars on the scene. One of the guys involved started "attacking" cars parked along Crystal Palace Rd. That place is a dump, lots of the punters are chavs & pikeys, and I hope they get priced out of ED.

There are two types of Vietnamese restaurants in London, in my experience. Those which sell Vietnamese food, and those which sell sweet & sour pork. If your resaurant is the former, it may have sufficient demand! I think any restaurant along LL will do well as long as the food is good, and the environment is pleasant.

Whatever next? Residents who cannot spell?

It does contain at least one EDF reference, so the author may well have have been inspired by DM's posts...
