  2. You can respect somebody's right to hold beliefs, without actually respecting their beliefs. We all have the right to believe whatever we want. Doesn't mean that society has an obligation to indulge them.
  3. Yes, the problem is the poorly marked cycle path. Not cyclists, as such.
  4. Best place for cider - Hermits Cave in Camberwell. Probably 10 ciders on tap. Failing that, The Flying Pig sometimes have some good ones.

  6. Our service is fine - always has been. The "superhub" is a piece of crap though. Need to restart it every couple of days, and the range is rubbish. Think I'm going to buy a proper router, and run it in "modem-only" mode.
  7. uncleglen, your logic doesn't stand up - unless you honestly believe teachers should always get paid as much as the eventual salaries of the pupils they teach. Surely teachers realise that the brightest kids in their school are rapidly becoming smarter than they are. The trick is not to let them know that you know...
  8. I guess it's possible that cycle parking/infrastructure will get a few people out of their cars, but only in rare cases. Much more likely is that it will provide an alternative to our overcrowded, unreliable, and infrequent public transport.
  9. In reality the 50s/60s/70s/80s/90s were all game changers musically, with plenty of tribalism (whether the music and the "tribes" were good or bad is subjective and basically just depends on how old your are). Struggling to think what has really changed musically since the 90s. Most of the pop, rock, dance, hip hop, etc music around now would have been right at home 20 years ago.

    David Bowie...

Bit of a cold analysis Otta... yes, people die in more tragic circumstances every day. But those who felt a connection with his music felt a connection with him.. so a sense of loss is inevitable. As for me... I felt no genuine sadness as I never had that connection. Nevertheless, I greatly admire what he acheived and the way he went about his life.
  11. Not seen it for maybe ten years. Only used to watch it for the hilarious Mitchell "tough guy" antics. Does Phil Mitchell still shove Ian Beale's head down the toilet every now and again?
  12. Friend posted on Facebook: "Sometimes you get what you deserve. In Rupert's case it's a gold digging old skank".
  13. Sorry to hear you got a fine, but I think the combination of the "straight ahead" arrow below the lights, and arrows painted on the road are quite clear. So no point appealing IMO. I'd pay up asap if I were you, and avoid the increased fine.

  15. moondancer, if I think someone is being rude I will bloody well say so. And now you're being rude to me, so you've made it my battle now, haven't you?
  16. moondancer - yes agree re kids in pubs in the evening, but there is no need to be rude about it...
  17. Sorry to hear your evening was ruined, but IMO pubs in the evening should be adult environments.

The first three Elvis songs which popped into my head - Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes, Jailhouse Rock. Now I appreciate that music is much more diverse these days, but nevertheless, to my ears they are all really the same song. And two of them had already been recorded by someone else. At least Quo wrote SOME of their own stuff!
  19. So on unpopular opinions... I think these days Paul McCartney is under-rated, and John Lennon is over-rated. While macca being dragged out for every kind of ceremony is a bit tiresome, he wrote some great stuff for the Beatles (and some Wings material is actually decent too). Just forget anything after, say, 1975. Meanwhile John was not without his sins... Imagine is diabolical. And as for his whole "arty" phase... arggh. I think he has been remembered a bit too kindly. If he was still around, he'd probably be way more cringeworthy than Paul.
  20. The Who? I still enjoy their early stuff. Never been keen on the long-haired bare-chested rock opera stuff though.
  21. I am sure there are pockets of jaw-dropping beauty in Grimsby. But putting personal opinion to one side... objectively, the facts are that it's an area with relatively cheap property and relatively high unemployment. Pretty much everything is cheaper there. By London standards, prices at the Sea Cow were about right.

  23. This is not controversial. A few good songs, quite a few poor ones. Poor singer. Seemed relevant at the time.
  24. I kinda have some sympathy as I've been caught out in the same place. It doesn't help that the flow of traffic through there is so volatile, and people seem to drive quite aggressively. Nevertheless, sounds like you were at fault and to be honest I'm not surprised your appeal was rejected. "Bolstering fat cats?" Who are the fat cats? ?130 might sound like a lot, but doesn't go very far when you think about the whole process of enforcement, issuing fines, appeal, hearing, etc.
  25. I will admit that this "Whitby" place looks reasonably pleasant.
