I'm kind of OK with Bellenden Rd and the streets off it to be referred to as "Bellenden".. but "Village" is daft! As far as I'm concerned, on the road, there is no "driver-vs-cyclist" debate/war, the cyclist is vulnerable and drivers have to act responsibly and give them space. But there is an issue of some (a v small number) cyclists' respect for pedestrians.. which shouldn't be trivialised or blamed on other people...

Fox - I'm not talking about private hire or birthday parties, I'm talking about the classes and activities they run. Spider - we often had breakfast or lunch there. It is nothing like a "cr?che", there is nobody looking after the children outside of the classes. And I NEVER went in just for a coffee... I can never resist a piece of cake. Otta - it's basically just a cafe with a small play area at the back, with a few toys and books. Yes they could charge an entry fee per kid, but I think parents would expect more faciities and space in return. I think perhaps they were expecting the classes/activities to be their core business, but they didn't quite take off as well as they'd hoped?

The chocolate shop must surely be due to rent, if they're moving just round the corner. But who can tell what the deal is with Trio... such a shame, our daugher will miss it so much. Just going through the door used to put a smile on her face.

Of course infrastructure and safety for cyclists is the thing which needs to be addressed. I think you're doing your argument a disservice with the convenience/confusion angles, which I (and I would guess most people) cannot really sympathise with.

I wouldn't blame a cyclist for nipping over a stretch of quiet pavement if they were 100% certain there were no pedestrians around. Or of course, to take emergency evasive action. But usually - yes, it is selfish. Why defend cyclists' bad behaviour by saying "drivers break the rules too"? Nobody is defending dangerous driving... not an excuse.

It's not really a fair comparison rrr... the Iceland ready meals are cheap. For instance, their "pizzas" are enormous, thick, bready monstrosities which will fill two bellies, and cost just ?1. It's not hard to understand why people might buy them (in fact, most things in there seem to cost ?1 or ?1.50)! Ready meals... we usually have a couple in the freezer, for those times when there isn't really time to cook and wash up. Nothing to do with "knowledge of food", simply practicality (but yes, quite high in salt and fat).

We usually use Sopers, but think Moxons tend to have a better selection of shellfish in stock. Agree Sopers are better value too (to be fair their rent in Nunhead will be a lot cheaper than Lordship Lane). Also the big See Woo store in North Greenwich... everything is fresh from Billingsgate, and significantly cheaper than either Sopers or Moxons... worth the journey if you're cooking for a lot of people.

Saying "people eat oysters to brag" is not really any better than saying "people shop in Iceland because they'd rather their kids eat cheap, unhealthy food than cook a proper meal". Both are sweeping generalisations that apply to a minority. Neither even vaguely constructive or useful, serving only to smugly assert your superiority.

I have no doubt that some people eat things because they believe them to be exclusive. And I agree that it is a daft waste of money. But I'm not convinced that oysters qualify - they're not something I've personally ever considered posh (unlike fois gras, caviar, etc). But I guess it's hard to tell with any certainty what people are thinking.
