  1. Assume you're talking about your direct neighbours? IMO getting the work done before they move in is sensible. If you're concerned about the height - have you discussed this with them? I understand it's common for the roof to taper downwards at the side. What stage is the planning permission at?

I am going to lump on a reasonable sum on Clinton. What? Bush isn't even in the running any more... are those odd out-of-date?

    Immigration

Pretty much agree with miga/LM, the dictionary definitions may be almost interchangable, but the connotations are different. The word "expat" is never used to describe someone trying to escape from poverty or war. The word "immigrant" is never used when Sony send a senior manager to Weybridge. Clearly there is a large intersection... e.g. Aussies in London (cultural refugees?) But it's based on circumstances, not skin colour.
  5. Wouldn't describe it as "posh"... if anything it's a bit tacky and garish. But the food is OK. It's the kind of place where your shish comes with rice and salad (maybe some "pide" bread on the side) rather than bunged into a crappy dry pitta. They also do grilled seafood/fish, lamb chops, etc.
  6. Yep - the beer is usually alright. The places themselves tend to be a bit soulless, but a couple of the pubs are OK. I'd only eat in one again if there was no choice.
  7. Not really that kind of place, Sue - it's more of a restaurant.
  8. Yes, I was under the impression that bus countdown displays are being phased out in favour of mobile apps. Shame, as I often don't feel comfortable taking out my phone at bus stops.
  9. W looks like a moderate liberal compared with pretty much all of the current candidates. I'm not even sure that Trump is the worst of them. They're all vile.
  10. Sorry to hear that. Well done for standing up for yourself. Unfortunately it's best to be vigilant at all times, and keep valuables out of sight.

This seems pretty modest to me and > possibly more constructive than 'just move'. If that's aimed at me, you must have misunderstood. Someone else said that the lack of a direct west end link was the core problem. I disagree - and I repeat - it's not realistic to expect every area to have a direct link into the west end.
  12. Wetherspoons roasts are really bloody disgusting. Good riddance.
  13. ED and Peckham are good for commuting to the city (putting the current temporary situation to one side). Other areas are good for the west end, but not so convenient for the city (e.g. Putney, Wandsworth). Just the way it is. You can't expect every area of London to have a direct link into the west end.
  14. If you need a direct link to the West End, moving to ED was a terrible decision!
  15. It's set to be a cold "spring" though. Some are predicting a "white easter".
  16. It's OK. Definitely better than your average kebab shop. Didn't know you could BYO...

    Immigration

I basically agree, most people use the word expat to descibe someone working abroad in a skilled/professional role for a period of time (not sure if it makes much difference whether it's with an existing employer though). If they decide to stay permanently or apply for citizenship then you could say they have immigrated.

Yep, it has nothing to do with the colour of your skin. That's just tiresome Guardian PC bleating. Anyone working for a large multinational will have come across non-white expats at some point. The word "immigrant" tends to connote moving from a poorer country for a better standard of living, regardless of race.
  19. Nah. Bonne Maman is so mainstream. It's gotta be London Borough of Jam.
  20. Isn't this a temporary situation? My understanding was that we'd revert to the previous frequency when the London Bridge work is complete.
  21. Yeah, I've always liked the Hermits Cave... good beer and epic cider selection. Always seems to be a nice mix of people. No jam jars.

TBH it's not cheap - surprised you didn't consider it to be a poncey rip-off joint. Needless to say, the food is abysmal.
  24. jlee, the issue is that people DO use the cinema and the bar on top, but not the space in between. No point having a load of unused space, so the new "Peckham Levels" development sounds like good news to me. But it's a shame it's apparently only for five years.

    Sorry Bromley

Huh. I spent a couple of months working for Croydon Council, but we're going back 15 years or so. At least the scene of my misery - Taberner House (awful inside and out) has now been demolished. Several pints at lunchtime was the easiest way to get through it. There was a good cafe though, that did a special breakfast sandwich... like a whole fry-up inside a giant roll.
